Has any deal of that length ever worked well for the club?

Wonder who the other club with an offer is, full genius from the Knights imo... in all seriousness, probably the Roosters, but I seriously wonder if it could be the Warriors - have available space, he's a Kiwi etc... not sure how I'd feel about that - the big things with these are aging and injury - got to be successful in front end of the contract - presumably they're backloaded

Nearing the end of his deal now, can probably give the DCE one a pass mark, even though it hasn’t delivered a grand final. Taumalolo seemed to be a decent deal before Payten got there and started fiddling

If we use those 2 examples, DCE had a GF win, Clive Churchill Medal, Rep Footy etc on his resume, JT had a GF win, another GF run and. Dally M to his name. Brown has stuff all

yeah, I was thinking should an NRL club be stupid enough to let me be CEO, who would I commit that money or time to - the only one I can think of tbh is Cleary, probably a little shorter and hoping he can age like DCE *which I reckon is a good bet as long as he retains the motivation to be smashed week in week out), but that'd be a win now pay later scenario. I guess with likely expansion etc top level halves (of course Brown looks strictly a 6 imo) are going to be rare - but even as a 6 he's behind quite a few without even thinking hard - Munster, Luai, Burton easily, Walker (prob both) and Mamm too, and then from there I guess people could debate but atm even veterans like Hunt and Brooks on short term deals are more appealing, and Hynes is really a 6 imo and a much more accomplished player - it's not a knock on Brown, he's obviously a talent, but Moses is the guy there, and it's a big gamble on potential compared to the likes of Luai

Sam Walker would potentially be one you could look at, could be worried about his size long term but he has some runs on the board at a very young age. Taking Cleary out of those deals at the moment you’d have to be gambling on potential from someone 22-25 years old

One of the standout failures I can remember was Terry Campese who had 1 amazing season so they gave him 5-6 years and he didn’t produce again

well its not inflation adjusted ie. salaries go up over time. Maybe they think they are saving money in the long term if things work out.
Worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. They signed Pat Mahomes for a 10 year deal back in 2019ish? for 500 million (so 50mill a season). The top qbs today are getting 65mill and only going up. And he still has another 4 years to go on his deal.
Not saying Brown is even in the same stratosphere as Mahomes, but maybe the cost of a half in 3 years time is even crazier and they are protecting themselves from a bidding war?

I think the smarter managers set it up so the players get paid a percentage of the cap, has certainly happened in the past

Yea ratchet clauses arent they.

But on the topic of US sports, how do they mitigate the risk of athlete performances nosediving over 10yr+ contracts? As has been pointed out, they're a rarity in league and the success rate for the clubs is rarer still, but they're not that uncommon in the NFL and MLB.

I dont follow US sports much at all so no idea how often they work out for the teams, but given the frequency, I'm assuming they either work ok most times or they structure contracts in a way that allows teams to bail if needed?

Thats a good point - PNG will start building their roster in the next 12-18mths or so and with possible tax exemptions, they'll change the contract landscape.

Even if players have zero intention of ever moving to Moresby, agents will absolutely use it as leverage. And then team#19 probably wont be too far behind.

Agreed, it's bad.
2011 is at 9, when we made the GF. Behind 2001 (smashed in the first week of finals), 2004 (finished 2nd to last), 2010 (lost 1st round of finals) 2018 (same thing) and so on. And 2007 is behind 2006, even though we made top 4 and finals in 2007 and not in 06. And both are behind 2005, which was worse.

It's not bad, it's actually ridiculous.

Can't read the article as it's behind a paywall (thank goodness lol), but what I can see shows him ranking last season as our worst ever? It wasn't great, but it definitely wasn't the worst we've had

The worst was he had 2002 at 6th, yet he had the appalling season of 2004 at 7th, I hear Rattue will soon be leaving the Herald.

I’m shocked any of you read Rattue tbh, especially given there’s a paywall…. Even if free I wouldn’t bother
True...I do subscribe online, doesn't cost much. But Meth is right, it's filth.

I just couldn't believe you could get it that wrong when it's your job to watch it.
