Young Mortimer has had a rails run into the FG team and clearly needs to out play Aaron Fluke in Reggies and make his form demand a spot on the bench back in FG.

The way I see it he is now competing with Reni and super-sub Rogers for a spot on the bench. Even then he will need to oust the hooker currently on the bench.

If SK sneaks him back into the side (unless because of injury) then clearly he has photos from some of those Koala Way parties.

Agreed. LOL

It seems for the next year or so that it will be best for DM to play Reggies learning the craft of playing 14/9 and if he can't become the top dog Reggies hooker pushing for a spot on the NRL bench then he could end up playing in the ESL or join another NRL club. I have a sneaky suspicion that he will be pushing for a NRL bench spot well before this years finals come around. Daniel is tough, is persistent and will be determined to fight back becoming an important player in our top squad. I think he is a much better player than Anthony Mitchell who seems to be a lazy player. Daniels experience and toughness will be needed in this years semis.

Anyone club would be braindead to agree to that sort of clause

Yes they would!

It's my theory that we did - maybe not that exact clause, but something similar.

But I also bet his contract is for something like $150-170k - maybe if he plays reserves it gets closer to the 200k mark?

I dunno - let's see if he plays for Wenty THIS year, he didn't last...

Kinda feel sorry for the kid, was never really up to it yet has been given so many opportunities to show how little he really has.... which has only exaggerated the flaws in his game, as we keep seeing them over and over.

There's a difference between a conspiracy theory and just a theory mate!

I'm interested to see if he plays for Wenty - can't think why he didn't last year...

He just needs to get some confidence back, and the best place for that is at Wenty unless the media go mad putting shit on him for the next 18 months.

Hopefully out of sight is out of mind and they forget about him but that hasn't been the case for Israel Folau.

Also, I was watching the 2009 highlights the other day and how did Mortimer lose so much speed?

He needs more than confidence. Speed ? A major part of his problem.

Nah - he's really quick.

His major problem is definitely confidence, he shimmy shakes and stop starts. It puts the whole backline off.

But he is a competitor - always chasing down the breakaways and shows plenty of speed when covering. But he doesn't stride out in attack like he used to.

I defended him last year, but this year has been worse. I'm fed up with the runt - buh bye!

He has put on about 10kilos-And now he isnt fast anymore...
I think parra tried to turn Daniel Mortimer into somthing he isnt.He doesnt work with structure and isnt a controlled player. He was always good in link up play from broken attacks.
We tried to turn him into cooper cronk.Daniel could however be a very good hooker. The Anthony Mitchel love im yet to see the majic he has so its a position we are short on for next year and even this year.
One thing with morts is if he is told there where his future lies im sure he we knuckle down and do his best to make that position his

Mortimer will bounce back, says dad

NICK MCGRATH
26 May, 2011 04:00 AM
PARRAMATTA five-eighth Daniel Mortimer will have to fight his way back into the Eels’ NRL side through NSW Cup team the Wentworthville Magpies after being rested from the club’s last two matches. But his father, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs great Peter, believes the Orange CYMS junior is ready for the challenge.
“He is preparing himself to fight for his place in the side. He is more determined now than ever,” Peter said.
“He’ll bounce back. He has a really good attitude.”
Eels coach Stephen Kearney opted to rest Mortimer after making a stunning 43 tackles against the North Queensland Cowboys in his last game in round 10.
It’s the same tactic last year’s mentor Daniel Anderson used after the diminutive half made an NRL record 47 tackles for a five-eighth against the Brisbane Broncos in 2010.
However, this time the 21-year-old missed out on Parra’s 40-6 thrashing of the Cronulla Sharks and again was a notable omission from the Eels’ 17 named on Tuesday to take on Newcastle this weekend.
In-form halves pairing Jeff Robson and Casey Maguire were again named.
Peter Mortimer said the heavy workload in defence had hampered Daniel’s work with the ball so far this year.
“If you’re spent making that many tackles then you don’t have to much left in the tank,” he said.
He said his son wasn’t injured after playing the Cowboys.
“He was just rested,” Peter said.
“He made something like 40-odd tackles the week before (against the Cowboys) and the team just needed to try something different. They made the change and the team played pretty well against a pretty ordinary Cronulla side.
“It’s hard to change a winning side. He just has to wait for his chance now.”
Wentworthville take on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs this weekend at Ringrose Park, Wentworthville.
Peter hadn’t heard whether Daniel will take to the field or remain on the sidelines.
However, speculation has been rife Mortimer, along with new recruit Reni Maitua, will play for the Magpies on Saturday.
Peter is confident whatever Daniel needed to do to get back into the Eels side, he would do it.
“Absolutely. Eric Grothe, Ben Smith and Matt Keating have all had to come back from Wentworthville in the past. He’ll get his confidence back,” he said.
“Like all things, you go with the good times when you’re getting all of the accolades but things do get tough sometimes.
“But he isn’t doing anything differently, it’s just not going his way at the moment. He is still working hard, things just aren’t coming off.”
The Eels take on the Knights on Saturday night at Ausgrid Stadium while Wentworthville meet the Bulldogs at Ringrose on Sunday afternoon.

Dropped, demoted and an inundation of playmakers, but Mortimer assured he's in no danger

Chris Barrett

May 26, 2011

DANIEL MORTIMER has been assured by Parramatta that his place at the club is in no danger despite suggestions that his future was clouded after being rested by coach Steve Kearney and then sent to reserve grade for this weekend.
Mortimer was pulled from the Eels side prior to their 40-6 defeat of Cronulla on Monday night and the 21-year-old will feature in the NSW Cup instead of taking on the Knights in Newcastle on Saturday.
However, despite suggestions he was unwanted by Parramatta, Mortimer was guaranteed of his place in their plans in a meeting between his manager, Steve Gillis, and Eels officials last Friday. ''I don't understand what all the fuss is about,'' Gillis said. ''He's a 21-year-old kid who has played 49 first-grade games and the coach was giving him a rest.''

Kearney told the Herald yesterday Mortimer, whose contract runs until the end of 2013 , was going nowhere despite the acquisitions of Chris Sandow from Souths and Ben Roberts from Canterbury in the past month.
''He's got a contract with us so we're committed to it,'' Kearney said. ''He's a young half, it's always a difficult position … He's been under a fair bit of pressure in the last month and [Monday] was a good chance for him to have a break. He had made 43 tackles … the week before.''
Asked about Mortimer's demotion the coach said: ''It was hard to leave the guys out from Monday night.
''[Mortimer] is a hard worker, he's a good young lad. That's the beauty of this competition - it's week to week. If I thought he was the best option for us this week, we would have went that way. From week to week it changes.''
Meanwhile, Eels halfback Jeff Robson is likely to decide on his future by the end of this week. Robson has had a new contract offer from the Eels before him for two months, in which time Parramatta have complicated matters by signing Sandow and Roberts to add to their stockpile of playmakers for next year.
His manager, Gavin Orr, said his client had offers from elsewhere as well and may make a final call on his future in the ''next 24 to 48 hours''.
''[Parramatta] have got an offer out to us. We're looking at that [but] we haven't let them know,'' Orr said. ''He's just thinking about that stuff now.''
Kearney's purchase of Sandow, on a salary in the range of $450,000 a season, and former Kiwi international Roberts would appear to minimise the prospect of both Mortimer and Robson remaining on his first-grade roster. The Eels also have Tom Humble on their books as a back-up half and Casey McGuire showed on Monday night he was another option.

why haven't we been using that stockpile?

also disagree with peoples' thoughts mortimer would make a good rake. while he has improved this year it isn't enough it seems and he seems to have hit another plateau. he works hard but to suggest a guy that struggles to pass left to right, pass the ball 10m and pass off the ground (as shown last year when he played a bit of dummy half) i think he would struggle. combine that with the fact that he is being rested because he is already struggling with his defensive workload and it pretty much tells you that he won't make a good run at hooker.

i feel for the young bloke but some people's ability won't get them to the top.
