Daniel Mortimer dropped from Parramatta Eels side for second match running - AND OMG

AS his teammates wrestled and frolicked at a pool recovery session, Parramatta's Daniel Mortimer would have known yesterday his NRL career was at the crossroads.

A shock axing from Monday's 40-6 thumping of Cronulla, Mortimer was again dumped for the Eels' road trip to Newcastle with Casey McGuire the preferred No. 6.

To make matters worse, McGuire enjoyed the shift to five-eighth and said he would try to make the move permanent.

While Mortimer preferred not to comment, there was a buzz at Parramatta that McGuire and Jeff Robson could be the new halves to resurrect the club's 2011 campaign.

"Daniel Mortimer is a great young player, he's probably been a bit frustrated with the start this year and it would be great to have him back," McGuire said.

Kearney said Mortimer had been rested because of his recent heavy workload.

Wenty officials are tipping Mortimer and new recruit Reni Maitua to be on board for Saturday's clash with Auckland Vulcans at Ringrose Park.

Newcastle Knights v Parramatta, Ausgrid Stadium, Saturday 5.30pm (EST)

The Adjudicator says: "Sometimes that 2001 grand final feels like just yesterday when in reality it was so long ago that Timana Tahu was playing for the Knights. Oh, wait a second. Moving along, the Eels will hit the road a bunch of happy campers, all except for Daniel Mortimer and his big sad eyes.

Everybody's favourite little emo just can't take a trick - that's the second time in two seasons he's been 'rested' by his coach; I reckon the poor kid just wants to hear the truth. I can see it now, as little Dan gets on the Greyhound headed out of Parramatta on Saturday and just like that scene from Forest Gump, his former buddy Jeff Robson looks at him and says 'seat's taken'. As little Dan moves to the back of the bus, who should sidle up next to Robson but Casey McGuire. Heartbreaking."

The Adjudicator's verdict: "Mortimer's exclusions sucks for him but I reckon it could be a season-saver for the Eels. Agree or disagree?"

Clicky

Man, the media are all over it. It'll get worse too, once Kearney finally admits Mortimer was dropped rather than rested.

As curator of the "Daniel Mortimer for Gold Logie" thread, I am heartbroken that he has chosen to make no comment on the situation.

Not even a positive spin Dan ? An opportunity to work hard to claw back your position ? How about that you love a good sausage sizzle at Wenty ?

Jokes Dan. enjoy your rest. Maybe even drop your twitter pal @russellcrowe a note and see what's doing with their team for next year..

I said last year that I believe Mortimer has a 'no reserve grade' clause in his contract.
Andersen couldn't drop him, only rest him.

Now Kearney can't drop him, only rest him --> no drop clause anyone?!?!?

Anyone club would be braindead to agree to that sort of clause

Yeah there's no clause like that IMO. He's just a rookie that's in the spotlight more than most. So they feel compelled to protect him as best they can.

If that's true SK should play him in reserve grade and hope Morts exercises his get out clause.

Daniel Mortimer gives 100% week after week playing for the Eels - his only detraction is his weight and not being ready to play 6 or 7. He really needs to play 14/9 for a few years until he physically matures and his brain has learnt to be composed for 80 minutes in the heat of battle. Though I am all for Daniel being "rested" from playing 6 for the rest of this year, I still feel he needs to be fully supported by us and not have any smart-arse shit be dumped on him by any Eels fan. This is f**ked and disgraceful and has me ashamed to be a Parramatta fan. Wake up you f**king idiots!. Can't you see Daniel bleeds for our club and with our support and encouragement he will continue to grow and learn and eventually be that very good NRL player we all want him to be. It's not Daniel's fault he got the contract he got after his stellar 2009 season at a time when almost all of you fans were drooling all over him and pushing the club to keep him at any cost! Yes, his next contract should be dropped to around $120k/$150k until he finds his permanent NRL niche in our squad. I feel Daniel has the makings of becoming a very good 14/9. Lets support him in this transition and encourage him. He should not be wasted (or written off) to our club after all the work we have put into him thus far. He will bounce back and when he does we will all be very grateful we kept him as an Eel.

Young Mortimer has had a rails run into the FG team and clearly needs to out play Aaron Fluke in Reggies and make his form demand a spot on the bench back in FG.

The way I see it he is now competing with Reni and super-sub Rogers for a spot on the bench. Even then he will need to oust the hooker currently on the bench.

If SK sneaks him back into the side (unless because of injury) then clearly he has photos from some of those Koala Way parties.

He can't play 6...can't play 7....so let's play him at 9 !!
As if that is an experimental position that we can play around with !! The only place one can play him is wenty ...if he is making a killing there we can think about him else waste of a team place for me in FG.
