AS his teammates wrestled and frolicked at a pool recovery session, Parramatta's Daniel Mortimer would have known yesterday his NRL career was at the crossroads.
A shock axing from Monday's 40-6 thumping of Cronulla, Mortimer was again dumped for the Eels' road trip to Newcastle with Casey McGuire the preferred No. 6.
To make matters worse, McGuire enjoyed the shift to five-eighth and said he would try to make the move permanent.
While Mortimer preferred not to comment, there was a buzz at Parramatta that McGuire and Jeff Robson could be the new halves to resurrect the club's 2011 campaign.
"Daniel Mortimer is a great young player, he's probably been a bit frustrated with the start this year and it would be great to have him back," McGuire said.
Kearney said Mortimer had been rested because of his recent heavy workload.
Wenty officials are tipping Mortimer and new recruit Reni Maitua to be on board for Saturday's clash with Auckland Vulcans at Ringrose Park.
