Is it just me, or do QLD players generally speak very well? DCE (the master); Thurston (he's really improved from his younger days); Slater; Cronk; Smith; Thaiday; Guerra; Myles; Parker; Tate; Boyd (when he wants to)...they're all f**king eloquent!

Exactly, hes not shy or anything like that. He is just a tool who seems to be under the impression that fobbing off the media with bullshit is the way to go

I think he is shy and introverted, and besides, it's what people have always said about him; even his high school footy coach said he was pretty shy. There's also a big difference between talking to a news reporter and talking to a QRL employee. I just don't think the Darius you see in the media (which is rare) is the real Darius. Most people believe that WB is a good bloke, but he can look like a tool himself at press conferences sometimes.

Haha, yep. Aaron Woods IMO is shocking as well. Hayne used to be awful but he's improved quite a lot. I know he's retired, but even Joey used to be shocking, he said he used to find it impossible to look people in the eye when he was conversing with them.

I just find it funny that people are up in arms with Darius

I couldnt give a crap what he as to say, same goes with alot of other players, it is all cliche crap and rehearsed answers.

95% of players are boring and offer nothing when it comes to radio / tv / print interviews.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not the biggest fan of Daaaaaaarius.

I don't understand how some can defend accosting him in the street when he's going about his business just after winning an origin game. It wasn't a scheduled presser or organised through either Newcastle or Boyd. Perhaps instead of being f**king amateurs, the media outlets could give his manager or himself a quick call and organise to meet with him at a specific place or meet with him while he goes about his rounds for the day.

Nor can I understand how he should have a better ability to communicate with the media if he is prepared to take a bigger chunk of the broadcasting money. Nine (and others,) pay for the right to broadcast the game, not accost players in the street at their leisure and then get shirty when they get blown off.

Boyd handled it badly, this I will concede. But I am not surprised he did handle in the manner he did.

The guy's a high profile sports player - Being asked questions by the media is a big part of this..... scheduled or not - I'm not saying he should be eloquent and full of insight, but to be rude for the sake of it comes across as childish - He's an arrogant prick

I kind of sided with him, then considered that he is paid upward of $650k a year and has a responsibility to talk to the media in a professional way. Shy or not there are ways and means and acting like a merkin isn't a great one for one of leagues public faces.

Like the argument that players should be able to get on the pss and act merkins, he is in a high profile public job that has media responsibilities. Want the big bikkies then you have to earn them and that includes dealing with one element of your job which is media intrusion. Don't like it, get a real job and no one will bother you.

I find the media's attitude that they feel the right to shove a microphone in your face, anywhere, any time, rude.

Even found myself for once agreeing with Gorden Tallis (re: Boyd). Squires was like, 'well, the media DO have the right to shove a microphone in your face if it's in a public place'. f**k off, no they don't. It's an unwritten law in this country that one shall not act like an annoying merkin in public. If he just said 'no comment', she would have just kept bugging him and bugging him and bugging him. But when he started to snipe back, she backed off a little, you could tell. He has a right to express annoyance if he's being annoyed, and he did it without any remotely confronting behaviour

So this happens to you regularly, being a high profile sports star?

My point is, if I got paid as much as Darius Boyd does and had his public profile, I'd expect cameras and microphones in my face and be prepared rather than act like a spoilt kid.

Right, so now I need to be a footy player to form my own view of how the media behave, because I guess watching the media every day seems to be redundant tool of judgement

There's no problem with players expecting the media, but there's a line that media should a) identify and b) should not cross. Ambushing players ACA/TT style is pathetic. The media these days think they can surprise you in your bed with a microphone after you wake up.

Now unless you absolutely love the limelight, if someone is following you down the street shoving questions at you with a microphone, you're going to feel very annoyed. So apparently normal people are allowed to react, but footy players aren't. Footy players aren't allowed to react because they know they're being judged by an idiotic self-righteous public.

So to clarify this, if you were a sports star, you would be open to the media 24x7.....leaving your house, coming home, leaving a hotel, at a restaurant etc?

Ok sure
