Darren Lockyer: this World Cup just the start

Dave Donaghy | October 31, 2008 12:00am

DARREN Lockyer has had enough of the cynics. The tone in his raspy voice is the most obvious giveaway. "Yeah," comes the response when the issue is raised.

Lockyer, the Australian captain in the twilight of his career, says he is proud to be a part of the first World Cup since 2000.

He has gone above and beyond in promoting the month-long tournament involving 10 nations. It's the same with the rest of the Australian squad. And all the countries involved.

But for all their work, scepticism of the cup's worth remains.

Like the International Rules Series pitting our AFL stars against Ireland's best Gaelic football players, many critics still question its value, with rugby league played in only a handful of countries.

Lockyer says there are many reasons.

The veteran playmaker, closing in on Mal Meninga's Australian Test match record, is a firm believer in the event, first staged in France in 1954. "I think it's a great concept," he said.

"We're not kidding ourselves. We know it doesn't have the same aura as some of the other codes and their world cups. But you've got to start somewhere.

"It's a great platform and I think we can build on it."

The tournament has proved a hit with fans. Despite eligibility and grouping issues, crowds have turned up in their droves.

With international cricket seemingly on the wane - and with Australia touring India - rugby league has capitalised on the vacant sporting market.

The Kangaroos played New Zealand in front of almost 35,000 in Sydney on Sunday. About 40,000 are expected to turn up to Sunday's blockbuster between Australia and England at Telstra Dome.

The final in Brisbane was sold out months ago.

"It's a great thing to be involved with," said Australian assistant coach Allan Langer, who played in World Cups in 1988 and 1992.

Privately, rugby league officialdom say they have an event capable of eventually overtaking rugby union's version, despite giving up years of ground. And they are confident the 13th edition of the cup will return a profit from the $21 million invested in staging it.

"It's succeeded beyond our expectations," International Rugby League Federation chairman and tournament director Colin Love said.

"We always thought this would be the foundation for the future. Whatever we do in this tournament is laying the foundation for future tournaments.

"In five years' time, it's going to be that much better. The future of the international game is looking really healthy."

Lockyer says the younger members of his squad are already looking towards the 2013 tournament.

England is favoured to host that event, with the cup to be up for grabs every four years after that.

"All the players are really positive about it," Lockyer said.

"Kurt Gidley was shattered when he had to pull out. He said to the boys that he doesn't know whether he'll get another World Cup in because they're talking another five years to beat that Olympic cycle.

"So it means a lot to the players and so far everything's been really positive. There's been no talk that there's not going to be another one.

"Everyone's focused on this one. The young blokes can set themselves for the next one."

If Joey was still captain he would have been in the papers spruiking for the cup every day and would have talked up every team and 3/4s of the players by now.

You get the feeling Locky forces himself to do this stuff, but Joey loved it.

There isn't anyone better at the moment, but i'd like to see a captain who is a bit of a media s**t next time - Cameron Smith loves the spotlight.

roopy please don't turn this into another Johns/Lockyer conflict! :p

Lockyer has always been a passionate Rugby League fan through out his career and has been a terrific spokes person when it comes to the expansion of our game.

And he's not high on f**k knows what either. The fact that a druggie was Aus captain is embarrassing enough, whatever th excuse. Locky really is a champ, even if he is a Bronco.

What a load. Lockyer has been talking about competing in this world cup in articles since 2006 at least. When he had his knee injury last year he went over to England and promoted it. He always speaks well of his pride for playing for the Kangaroos and ambitions of International Rugby League.

Jeezus Roops, no wonder everyone thinks all Newie fans are Joey eyed dribblers. Lockyer is every bit (arguably more) the captain Joey ever was and deserves the respect and admiration for his position in Australian RL which includes what he has done for international league.

Lets stop the Joey v Locky sh*t now, it is pointless.

Lockyer looks like someone has his testicles in a vice when he has to front the media - and he went to the same place as Wayne Bennett to get his personality bypass done.
He does look a lot better in print - but who has seriously seen him croak out more than 10 words in an interview? and telling jokes is not his thing either.

I suppose it is cute that all you guys have all this Lockyer love, but he might be the worst media performer in Aus sport - Willie Mason has him covered - and even Tonie Carroll has some sort of caveman charm.

I dont know about you but I'm not the most outgoing bloke either. Stick me in a room full of people wanting me to say stuff and I'd be caught in the headlights for sure.

Locky doesn't seem to be the world's most extroverted bloke so I'm guessing he wouldn't do any publicity if he didn't have to but when it comes to promoting footy and the WC he steps up. And the fact that we're now getting some 'get over it' publicity about all the media whinging suggests that the tide might be turning, even just a little bit. Locky is the bloke on the front of that change so all power to him.

Brilliant player, excellent ambassador (apart from the odd pub bouncer lol) but a shy bloke.

I'm sure there's many people who can relate to that, public speaking is apparently more feared than death after all.

i think being the leader of a national team does include media duties and talking up the international scene. Darren Lockyer is a good role model as Australian Captain and thats probably his best quality.

Cam Smith is more media hype and could perhaps generate some every now and then in Melbourne

He whinges too much and tends to come off as very arrogant IMO. I dont like seeing him as Aust captain, he is a pre madonna of the highest order.

Jonathon Thurston for skipper imho Smith is all hype loves the media and a bit of dribble to talk himself up and hide the fact that he looks like a living hangover. JT is a leader on the field to not degree and it would inspire so many indigenous ppl to see JT up there!!!

and for the record its f**king embarassing to know our halback of the century is a coke head the joey vs locky debate is pointless and a waste of everyones time. One thing i would be intertested in did joey ever go to rehab???

What Lockyer has is credibility. When he says something people listen because he is respected. Can't say that about the likes of Willie Mason or Anthony Mundine or any of the "extroverts" we have to put up with in the media. The meek will inherit the earth - and the Kangaroo captaincy with a bit of luck.

Look i don't want to turn this into a league v union thing (realising that some of you will go apesh*t but here goes) but the bit where they said the league world cup could rival the union one rings a bit hollow to me.

For that to happen the league organisers would actually have to promote the game. Here on the gold coast there has been more publicity about midget boxers (front page local paer) this week than the nz v png game. They would also have to get a decent tv deal from a network that shows the games live. Whether that means just fox or setanta or 7 or ten who knows. Then they would have to promote the game in the countries involved eg spend money to develope league in ireland, scotland etc etc. This would create interest from the public. I am not in ireland but how much of the irish public actually know they have a side in the world cup ? They would also have to have regualr international matches between sides eg tonga v samoa.

Do the current administrators seem capable of the above to anyone ?

Also the bit about the final being sold out. Is that true or an urban mythe ?
