The next step is to partner the automatic sin bins with harsher suspensions.

Yeah, a bloke who throws a punch should get 2 months on the sidelines. I hope your Sammy B doesn't lose his temper. He'd be an easy one to target with a bit of niggle. A firecracker waiting to explode. Wonder how you'd react if he gets a few months on the sidelines over the finals series for throwing one punch???

The problem is, as has already been said by myself and a couple others, there's no hard evidence to show that throwing around severe punishment will stop it. Even the circumstantial evidence - fights in rugby, fights in English SL - sort of goes against the idea.

The best that can hoped to be achieved by a strong clamp-down is that the perception of the sport/competition changes for the better. But there's no real evidence that that's going to happen either.

What you'll notice though is that, even though it hasn't stopped fighting, it has stopped them turning into riots where all the players are squaring off. Away from the guy that threw the punch and the guy getting hit, everyone else has cooler heads and realise its not worth the 10 minutes off the field.

You could see it in the 2nd Origin game. People were saying that 2 of the 4 guys sent to the bin didn't even throw punches. That means that, in the entire fight, only 2 guys did throw punches.

Compare that to game 1 where everyone was trying to land one and you'll see the rule change has actually done some good.

Now you've descended into the land of fantasy. Most fights in rugby league have always been two individuals throwing them with everyone else pushing and shoving or trying to cool the situation.

And in Origin 1 only 2, possibly 3 people are seen to throw a punch: Gallen, Parker and (perhaps) Pearce. At best that's 1 more person throwing a punch than in the fight in game 2. A far cry from "everyone" trying to land one.

NRL players are not wild animals. They do have the ability to think rationally.

Punish fighting harshly enough and you will give players absolutely no choice.

If Gallen knew he would cop 4 weeks (for repeated unprovoked strikes to the head, I think that is not over the top) he wouldn't have thrown a punch to save his own mother.

You have NFI ,about this or any other subject.
Anyone who reads any of your lies/ramblings is dumber for the experience.

You failed to answer the question. How will you react if Sam Burgess is continally niggled at and throws one, gets four to eight weeks suspension and misses the finals????? Will your stance weaken Peter Rabbit????

No club or coach will tolerate a player throwing a punch when we all now know it's an automatic 10 minutes off.

If you take the selfish option and throw a punch because you're a bit mad and force your teammates to play 12 on 13 for 10 minutes you will be dropped by any half decent coach. And the significance of 12 on 13 at origin level is even greater so it would be even dumber to do it at that level.

Punching in RL has basically been forced into extinction with this. From now on punches will be about as common as genuine spear tackles.

Gold.

Apparently David "double standards" Smith is in England at the moment.

Hope the merkin stays there. Worst administrator the game has ever had.

Well if nothing else, we know DSmith has balls. Think of all of the media abuse and public outrage for some of the stuff he has done, but he is standing by his decisions, because he thinks longterm they are the right thing to do.

Seriously how did we end up with a Rugby Union loving Welsh banker running our game?
Ask the people that are really running the game!

Please, don't mistake ignorance for backbone!

Everyone needs to think rationally and not just the players. If everyone thought rationally then we wouldn't have a problem here, full stop, because everyone would understand that the frequency, the potential for real physical harm, and the actual factual influence of these physical altercations on children are all minimal. Everything here is insignificant but everything here has been blown well out of proportion and that is because few people really are thinking rationally about this matter.

DS started well but gone all limp waisted on us. Still waiting to see any operational plans to meet the strategic goals they set. Now his team are in place I hope we start seeing some action across the game and not just at NRL level.

Just because he hasnt given you a team doesnt mean he's not doing anything.

He has said they will review expansion end of 2014, I don't expect him to have "given" us a team. However where's the action on:
Growing the number of reg players
Growing the avg attendance
Growing membership
Or any of the other kpi's they have set themselves?

Anything?
