By Dean Ritchie MANLY winger David Williams will today be officially called into Australia's World Cup team to play the Kiwis in Saturday night's final at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. The Daily Telegraph understands Brent Tate - named in the team yesterday - has not recovered sufficiently from a hip flexor injury sustained in last Sunday's semi-final.
Tate warmed up with the side before training yesterday but did not run. He later had scans on his hip.
Australian team management last night said Tate was still in the side.
Kangaroos lock Paul Gallen (thigh) is also in some doubt with Anthony Watmough on standby. Meanwhile hostilities between 60-year rivals Manly and Parramatta re-ignited last night over Williams. The Daily Telegraph reported this week that, due to salary cap constraints, Manly may have to ditch Williams or fellow winger Michael Robertson after next year.
Williams is on a modest base contract of $50,000 but is ready to ask Manly for a deal worth $200,000 a season - the same price being sought by Robertson, a three-try grand final hero who represented Scotland in the World Cup.
Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald jumped straight in last night claiming he would like Williams to return to Parramatta, the player's former club. But Manly CEO Grant Mayer responded by telling Fitzgerald to keep away from Williams.
Cheekily, Manly recently referred to Parramatta as its feeder club - the Sea Eagles having poached a number of players including Ray Higgs, Geoff Gerard, Tony Melrose, David Liddiard, Scott Donald, Shayne Dunley, Kylie Leuluai and Jamie Lyon - from Sydney's west to the northern beaches.
But Fitzgerald may be considering a "get square". "David Williams is a very good player - if he was available, we'd love to see him come back," he said last night.

i am a tad baffled.

it wasn't long ago that our club was saying that we were stretchd financially and couldn't afford more players. i'm not sure who is off contract at the end of 09 that will ease that stress so that we can afford williams' speculated $200k asking price.

also, the guy had an awesome first year playing in a side that almost completely dominated the comp but who's to say he wont fall from those heights in his second year (happened to plenty of others before). seems like a lot of money to be throwing around at another winger when we should really be looking at quality props.

dan..the NRL grant is about 3.5 mill which is pratically the sallary cap and clubs basically use that grant to pay players..

Parra will be cutting back outside that in administration, coaching and development.

ja, i see. but i guess what i am getting at is that i thought, based on the comments of df and hagan earlier this year, that our cap was spent up and that's why we weren't getting anyone not already in the club in our playing ranks. i am not sure of our player contract status but who would we need to let go at the end od 09 in order to afford a player that has been speculated to be asking $200k a year? i thought all our highest paid players were tied up until the season after...

We have quite a number of players of contract at the end of 2009. You can also assume that the new coach will want to mould the playing roster he wants.

Manlys accountants will be able to whip up a new 3 year $300,000 a season deal very shortly without loosing anyone, they're simply amazing accountants.....

So Stagger are you going to trot out the line that DF has nothing to do with player recruitment?

Yet another example in a long line of DF attempting to align himself with any potential signing, or popular signing, while blaming all unpoular decisions on coaches (and particularly Brian Smith).

Whenever there is a big signing or resigning that will be poular, Dennis calls a press conference to announce the signings. When we lose a popular player, the coaching staff get responsibility. this generally takes the form of Dennis going on to 2KY or 2GB, copping hard questions about recruitment, and blaming the coach.

Now, on the eve of an election struggle, DF is suddenly trying to link himself to the potential signing of a Parra and NRL favourite (despite all the doom and gloom about our finances and the salary cap).

You just have to keep in mind at all times that he is a politician first and foremost when you read all this stuff.

fmd Bigfella, ofcourse he'll call a press conference he's the CEO and I wouldn't take that comment seriously as it's only part of the gamesmanship involved by 2 clubs to bluff Manly into, paying overs him.

Fact: DA and DA alone will have the initial say on who will represent this club on the field.

Fact: once DA sounds out who he wants, then he with General manager of football operations, Andrew Hill and football Manager, Phil Moss will begin negotiations on the players manager..

Fact: fitsgerald will ultimately agree with the terms and conditions and sign off on the contract with the Chairman.

is that clear?
