The slippery eel music background

1987 - 1989

AC/DC - My first group i loved as a 13 year old!. Absolutely adored the Bon Scott Days..... felt sad everyday about his death in 1980 and wished it never of happened. Fav albums were Let There be Rock and If you want Blood You've got It. Back in Black was an awesome comeback after the death of an Aussie legend.

1989 - 1991

Metallica - Bought And Justice For all around the time it came out and the Black Album and went to see them at the Entertainment Centre in 1993. My favorite Band to this day.

1991 - 1993

The Doors - Inspired by the movie that came out in 1991 and went and saw the Australian Doors so many times back in 93 & 94!. The Revesby Roundhouse was like the real thing.

1993 - 1995

Seattle music - Nirvana, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam and Jimi Hendrix.

At the moment - Metallica in a huge way with bits here and there of the past music i have listened too.

This might shock a few people but??.....IMO Hendrix was overated!!....his guitar work was very simplistic eg Nirvana (except Little Wing) and his guitar solo's alot of the time didn't coincide with the actual song!!

Ed Van Halen & Jimmy Page done more for guitar IMO!!!

Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page were great guitarist but they had nothin on Hendrix!. Santana and Clapton were close but still no cigar compared to Jimi. Hendrix improvisation skills were the best i have seen from any guitarist.

They did had everything on Hendrix Slippery!! ;-)

Jimi did not have the repetoir or variety that Eddie, Jimmy or Satriani had at there disposal!!

Jimi hendrix....was a rip of of Chuck Berry.....his guitar playing resembled alot of it so in my opinion how can he be reconigised as such a great when in reality he was a Chuck Berry copy cat!!.....if anything Chuck Berry is the greatest guitarist....he was the original master!!

Eddie Van Halen introduced to the world tapping, squirling, dive bombing etc.....put it one way.....all the rock bands from the late 70's to the early 90's had a VH feel about it in regards to guitar techniques....including Metalica!!

Santana i believe was a good guitarist but??....as i said about Jimmy didn't posses the repetoir of Eddie and the likes & besides it's not that hard to get out a Hendrix music book and play his stuff.....very basic actually where as try and play some VH, Satriani, Floyd, Sabbath etc alot more complex!!

If we are talking guitarists - and yes I know that he never actually played in any of the bands that you have put up - the best guitarist of the past 45 years at least is Chet Atkins.

That being said Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn (God rest his soul) would rank among some of the greatest I have ever seen.

I totally agree!!

I can't believe that Malmstein & Satriani haven't gotten the credit they deserve!!

All i wan't to know is.....how do you define the best guitarist???

If it's through inovation

Then it's Chuck Berry & Eddie Van Halen 1 & 2

If it's timing & complexity

Eddie Van Halen...Malmstein, Satriani, Vaughn..1,2,3,4!!

I'll post the Top 100 guitarists done By "Rolling Stones" magazine later!!

I think they drew that list out of a hat. I notice John Petrucci of Dream Theater didn't get a mention. Played the G3 concerts last year with I think it was with Vai and Satriani.

I haven't heard all those guitarists but Angus young, Eddie Van Halen, Dave Gilmour should all be higher.
Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani and Petrucci should all not only be on the list but at least in the top 50 and probably top 10 if Kirk Hammet is ranked no. 11.
Kurt nobrain shouldn't be in the top 100 million.

Where's Nigel Chad and Ben Cossuto?

Oh, that's right - they only list Top 100 "Mainstream" guitarists.

Pfffft - Half the real metal guitarists from the last 15 years would blow those guys off the list

well obviously, the list is not just judging technical ability. but i think it's fair to say kurt cobain produced music that reached a lot of people and considering rolling stone magazine only really covers popular music, he's gonna get credit for that

my fav guitarist is from josh homme in kyuss. once again not technically superior, but he's created so many classic riffs. and then myself. because if you don't love yourself, who can you love?

Cobain didn't reach a squillianth of the people that Page, Blackmore, Gilmour, Van Halen, Young or even friggin Ace Frehley!

As I said when we published that list at the Pub a few weeks back, some of the choices were disgraceful. The top ten - bar Allman at no. 2? (Allman at friggin 2????) were pretty accurate. Chuck Berry getting high was deserved, as was BB King. VH and Blackmore being down was a disgrace, but the worst was the absence of Steve Morse. 5 times guitar player of the year in the mid 80's (beating Van Halen, Satriani, Vaughan, Vai, Malmsteen, Di Miola, Cooder and whoever else was around at that time) was an absolute travesty!

AND NO GARY MOORE!!!!!

Did Brian smith pick the list?

That top 100 is a shocker!. Im Metallicas biggest fan but no way is Hammett better than Carlos Santana!. Santana should be in the top 5 of all time.

Kurt Cobain?????. Cool music but Nirvana never really played guitar solo's.

Love or Hate Frank Zappa music, but geez he could play.... he should be in the top 10.

Got one thing right.... Jimi no 1

hold up. i can't see daniel wagon in the top 13

and think of popularity in terms of rolling stones readership. remember, this is a magazine that often has britney spears on the cover. i'm sure there is a pecialist guitar magazine with a more accurate list out there

but really, it's irrelevant. the quality of music all comes down to the individual who's listening to it. if you like a guitarist, why should it matter where they go on some list?!?

and santana sucks!!!

I agree with you Zappa......i was actually expecting him to be in the top 10!!

Frank Zappa also thanked Eddie Van Halen for "reinventing the guitar" ............pretty big compliment!!

Jimi should be number 50 !!!

c'mon Ron.... Jimi was the best!. Have you seriously listened too his music?. He took guitar playing to another level that chuck berry created.

As for Eddie Van Halen..... i love Van Halen (the david lee roth days) but he wasn't the best. When your playing fast music ie Van Halen & Metallica.... it limits the guitarists ability. For example listen to Metallica's Kill em all and its all speed guitar. Jimmy Page was better than Eddie!.

Disagree Slippery......i was into Hendrix when i started playing and basically it was a yawn.....i once learnt half of his songs in one day!!...that shows how simplistic it was!!...the only decent guitar song he wrote was "little wing"

Honestly Slippery buy VH first album....when it came out it absolutely engulfed the world with it's innovation!!....listen to the song "Eruption" or "im the one"

Speed work is actually very hard to do Slippery....you have no time to think....Eddie was a very complex guitarist....trained by his music teacher father....he knew the theoritical side of things inside out & the practical even better!!

You no how good Ed Van Halen was??....Gene Simmons and the boy's of Kiss tried to sign him up at 20 years of age in 1976 after watching him play in a local hall....he actually wrote many of Kiss's guitar solo's!!.....also Ed has worked on a number of other projects eg Guitar player for Michael Jackson's hit "beat it" & many tv programs in the US!!
