Decisions That Changed Finals

For Cowboys fans, Foran’s hand of God + Cronulla’s 7 tackle set must be up there...

Surprised the refs didn’t call Hunt’s drop a knock back, given it was against the Cowboys..

David Manson calling "play on" after it appeared that Nathan Brown had tackled Matthew Ridge just before halftime in the 1996 Grand Final. Ridge was eventually brought down a few metres out from the Dragons line, with Steve Menzies scoring on the ensuing play. Saw Manly go in leading 14-2 at halftime.

Dud call. Dont think that changed too much though. No one was beating Manly that year.

2006 GF, 2 of em.

Simpkins lettign go an obvious shepherd then penalising the storm for a “high shot” on a slipping berrigan to give them a 2 point lead, and then Harriman calling a knock on against the storm when Hodges dropped a bomb cold as a spud, which would have locked things up with 10 to go.

Haven’t seen an old fashioned stitch up like that since

That knock on was an absolutely terrible decision. There was also another call early in the game that gifted the Broncos first points, I think it was Berrigan again lost the ball cold and the refs gave them a penalty right in front to gift them 2 points

That call was pathetic but Manly were to good that day anyway
A bit like the 1987 GF. Michael O’Connor was a mile offside (you know it’s offside when Rex Mossop even says a Manly player is offside). But we never looked like winning that day.

2004 Semi, Cowboys trail Roosters by 3 points with minutes to go, Cowboys put up a bomb Mini spills it and Simpkins let's the clock run out??? This was after him letting Fletcher punch Fein in the head in front of the posts and do nothing.

Only one team was allowed to win that day.

I was at that Grand Final screaming furiously at the ref for robbing the Storm.

In retrospect, I'm very happy they lost.

Funny how sympathies can change so quickly

Also that now infamous moment with Walters and McGuire in the 88 GF, isn't the Balmain player adjacent McGuire offside when it's tapped forward anyway?

Billy the Skid dropping the ball cold and winning a penalty in the 2009 Grand Final. GI kicks one point in the ensuing set and wins the game

We were behind but we'd clicked and we were coming for them. At best it robbed the crowd of an absolute grandstand final few minutes

Only time I’ve heard Sterlo lose his cool in commentary.

“It would be... a shame... if the grand final was decided on a controversial penalty”

Poor ol Sterlo has put up with a lot over the years but aside from that he’s been something of a paragon of objectivity compared to other former players.

It was Ricko, champ. Pimp slapped him into next week.

And you got the sook wrong. The clock doesn’t stop for knock ons in league. The sook is that the rooster who dove on the knock on may have been offside, which would have resulted in a penalty and 1 final play for the cows.

Oh, and I thought of another one!

2004 prelim, Cowboys vs roosters.

Minutes before halftime, LOD blindsides Crocker with the mother of all dog shots, so far off the ball that cameras didn’t pick up on it.

A touchie saw the incident - as did everyone on the eastern concourse - but LOD somehow escaped with only being placed on report.

Luckily, justice prevailed that day
