That is a lot of unique work. Making it available is one thing, having this access abused and being taken for granted is another.

Thanks again for the comments. I appreciate them all. I'm not asking anyone to buy the book out of charity. But, as others have said, if you want a damn fine RL book at a bargain price, which hopefully can help towards financing further works, then here is the link > http://byanoldboy.wordpress.com/books/

Hey Sean, my knowledge of internet websites and their maintenance is limited, but could you not have made some money through advertising and copyright?

Not trying to have a go, just curious.

The only attempts at re-use of my material were the unauthorised ones who simply cut & pasted to their own websites (until I became aware of them & resolved them with the aid of a helpful lawyer).

I looked at advertising numerous times, and never came to the point where I thought the $ return was worth platering the site & annoying visitors with the adverts. As the site was also used by many children, I was averse to gambling adverts etc, which further limited the scope. Maybe that was unrealistic on my part, but I wasn't prepared to compromise on those.

That's a rare one to have - think I only printed about 200 of them in the end!

Thats the same major concern we have with our site too.

Can fully and wholeheartedly understand and agree with your sentiments Sean.

So long as you keep up the good work in RL circles mate, then thats the most important thing imo.

Sorry? what has happened?
I am a fan too, and have bought a couple of Seans books after reading on the RL1908 site.

Demetriou included a clause in his last media deal that all websites that don't follow the AFL line must be shut down.

lol

Wow, might have to get you to sign my copy then.

Have you thought about maybe seeking a formal relationship with the NRL?

You might be able to post some articles for their page and get some redirect traffic to sell advertising on your own site.

Whilst I'm disappointed that the site has gone down, I admire and support your stand.

Shame you couldn't be compensated properly for the thousands of hours of research you've done over the years.

The IC should have a position for an official historian, with a chain and cape and everything. That would be awesome.

Agreed with Tom, surely theres a full time gig at either RLIF or the NRL, that could use Sean's knowledge etc.

Hell I'd read a weekly article on NRL.com if Sean wrote it. I guess the NRL don't see that as attracting more $ to news corp.

But surely in the marketing/promotions department would at least have a sub contracted job for someone like Sean... perhaps they do already? Middleton? Please..

Agreed, thats the position was looking for in my above post. Official Historian..

I'd dare say most/all professional sporting bodies / leagues would find great use in such role.

I just want to add my thanks to Sean for all his work in RL1908. It's been a fantastic site and I've really enjoyed reading the articles over and over again. Plus your books are a joy to read, I've got two different copies of the Pioneers of RL, as well as the Club History book, and the DallyM book, all great reads. Plus I got a free copy of the Final Winter on DVD - thanks.

Fully understand why you've taken the site down and it's a shame that there isn't more of an official appreciation of the history of RL from the NRL/ARL.
