Did Gallop sell us short?

How can AFL be worth nearly double that of the NRL when we have a larger market (and growing). The question needs to be asked did Gallop sell the game short? Who was the winner, Packer/Murdoch or the game? It all happened so quickly unlike this AFL deal which has been dragged out.
How can we possibly get a good deal when the people bidding for the game own it? It's a bloody joke.
Good luck to the AFL for being run so well, I only wish the people running our game had it's best interest at heart also.
If someone can explain how AFL can be worth nearly double rugby league I would appreciate it. All they have is the regular season and finals throw in a pre-season comp and the ever popular Brownlow medal, we have this covered plus a lucrative representative programme.
Besides if we were promoted in the AFL states we would get better TV audiences than AFL in the north.
Gallop seems to only want the east coast, why?? If this doesn't get us more money than is he doing the game justice? Or has the game already been told where it's place is in the future?

Mate the word EGO might have a lot to do with the deal and also an unlimited amount of wealth.

Perhaps the deal Gallop got was the best he could have achieved. I doubt he'd sell the game short in any way.

NRL rates in 2 markets, AFL rates in every market. The AFL can add 2 percentage points to a network's overall share, the NRL can't. Simple as that.

Well LeagueXIII

Since we're half-owned...it's easy to see why we only get half of what we should...and why other sports get everything they deserve.

Gallop's doing the best he can, given our half-arsed circumstance.

Still makes ya chuck though, well...makes me chuck anyway!

I believe they sold us short by not demanding 9 show games at reasonable times in other states.

The NRL did a piss poor job. They should've waited and seen what 7 would have offered.

SBS doesn't show AFL, they show The Iron Chef!

Well...considering I'm thinking you're leaving the market that is New Zealand out of your equation....I don't place much stock in this statement.

NRL is owned by News Ltd. AFL isn't.

That's your answer.

AFL does not rate in Sydney or Brisbane. So of the 5 main markets - AFL rates in 3, NRL in 2. The NRL has 2 of the biggest 3.

NEWS/PBL are more than happy to divide OZ into an NRL market and an AFL market - works best for their business. The only sacrifice in that model is a token attempt to promote AFL in the Northern states - but the big payoff is having the NRL over a barrel makes it oh so easy...

Nine will not gain the rights to the AFL. This is simply a ploy by Packer to force 7 and 10 into paying a huge amount for the rights. 7 and 10 have the final right to bid. They cannot afford to miss out.

I fink if 7-10 want it they might have to find a couple of hundred million more then they expected.

Kerry's in control remember.

And as for Gallop selling us short.... I'm still 6ft. (and broke so I'm not bidding)

Cheers

Because New Zealand is a market for Australian television networks?

And yeah, the AFL gets whoomped by the NRL (and Iron Chef) in Sydney and Brisbane. But it has a large casual audience - think of the millions of Sydneysiders who watched the Swannies win last season. Can't exactly say that a million or so Melbournians dropped everything to see the Storm take the comp in 1999.

The NRL is not a national game. The NRL grand final will never get 4 million+ capital-city viewers like the AFL grand final can, and it does not have the ability to rate outside Sydney or Brisbane. That's why the AFL gets more, not because of a grand News Ltd. conspiracy.

When this new deal was signed, we all applauded as it was not only a large increase on what we already had but it came into effect earlier and gave the NRL the additional dollars at least 12 months earlier than the last deal.

This resulted in the inclusion of the Gold Coast Titans.

Why couldn't our rights be sorted once the NRL knew how much the AFL were getting? Also I believe $100m of the deal is contra, so expect alot more propaganda, oops I mean promotion of AFL up north. And alot more negative league stories, as the only way to hurt your competitor is to discredit it ie. damage it's image.

Dont forget that either Brisbane or Sydney have been in the last 5 AFL GF's which would probably explain high ratings in NSW/QLD for the AFL GF. If this year's GF is between West Coast and Adeliade im sure no-one in Brisbane or Sydney could give a sh!t.

Having said that, the AFL generally does rate higher than league in the 'other' states. Im sure that has alot to do with prime time, live coverage as oppsoed to league's 1am coverage.

See above post....this years preliminary final was killed in the ratings in Sydney by a nearly 20 year old movie! There is obviously cause for concern if people are more interested in watching staple 80s cinema than important club games/finals!

Oh and on "casual" adiences....you are dead right. As soon as the Swans and Lions start becoming shyte just like the good old days the wheels will fall off the bandwagon! Lions supporters are the dregs of rugby union fans and Swans fans are the dregs of union and Roosters fans!
