Once again, you can create any belief you like, fact, St George no longer plays in the the premier Rugby League competition in Australia & therefore its history stopped in 1998 & a new one started in 1999 with Illawarra, cant be that hard can it?

Thank you. And equally, you may 'create' any 'belief' you like.

With respect, that's a pretty simple way of looking at it.

Here's some actual facts for you:

1. St George exists as part of the Joint Venture, so therefore still has representation in the NRL. In business, the concept of a joint venture involves two or more entities getting together to accomplish a specific task(s). In our case, this gets reviewed on a regular basis.

2. The Illawarra are part of the Joint Venture in name only. Are you aware of this?

3. The next time you go to Kogarah, you will hear the crowd chanting "Saint-George".

Agreed, according to the official records, St George ceased in 1998, this is my contentious point, why aren’t others upset & the continual snubbing of our history, really irks me that we are grouped with The Cowboys & dare I say it, Cronulla as having won 1 premiership, the club should be fighting more for this. The cynic in me suggests that Illawarra are happy with this ?
Cut the BS mate

Cronulla also have the Amco Cup!

Yes I did, that’s why I asked the question
You picked up one point of my post while ignoring the rest. TBH, I thought you'd do that.

Illawarra is a region with a strong Rugby League heritage. Hardly dead, and not the point of the discussion.

Are Illawarra dead in the Joint Venture? Well, they don't have any members on the JV board and recently lost their only non-voting member as part of the latest review. So as JV partners, they're essentially gone. The only connection is through WIN Corp who took over Illawarra's financial interest in the JV sometime ago.

This is a fun ride.

I am in the 16 camp. To back this I go back to the original statement of the creation of the JV.
Along the lines of The history of St George with the juniors of Illawarra.
therefore I claim that the intent of the JV agreement was to include our proud history.

Yes , it was the intent of the JV, just not the intent of the NRL that doesn't recognise the 15 premierships

This is an Interesting debate so I will add my 2c worth.

1. The Illawarra DRLFC in essence no longer exists, however, they are still represented in junior competitions such as HM & SGB, as well as TGC.

2. Since 1998 we have had the official name of St George Illawarra Dragons RLFC.
Given point 1 above, the addition of Illawarra, appears more 'region' related than 'club' related. Under the 'region' of Illawarra, we have managed to develop many juniors through to 1st grade. Under this point (point 2) the Illwarra region is providing a pathway for many young players who eventually get funnelled into St George and play under the Dragons moniker. It is noted thst we have zero, St George juniors in our 2022 roster, the last St George junior to debut was Hame Sele in 2017.

3. Prior to 1998 we were called St George District RLFC.

4. At present time the JV is between St George Dragons and WIN Corp, the Illwarra Steelers nonlonger have any interest or are part of the JV.

So, this issue is then the 'Premierships' or is it simply the lack of interest in our history prior to 1998? Given the extremely poor undertaking of our centenary year, one could argue both points as jointly important, and ie it the NRL or the Dragond Board who are responsible!

The Premierships issue could easily be fixed by simply adding a few words ie:

Premierships: 16
St George Illawarra Dragons RLFC (1998 - ) 1,
As
St George District RLFC (1921 - 1998) 15

As simple as this may be it has to be lobbied by the Board to the NRL (my belief of how it has transpire).
As for the 100yr anniversary again this comes from the Board's enthusiasm, or distinct lack of it.

As for our current official name, we have added a whole nursery of players, stretching further and able to provide a pathways that could have easily now belonged to a rival, this is the Illawarra. The name also now officially encompasses who we are ie: the Dragons.

Finally, and as mentioned already, if we want to change whats written as our 'Premierships', Centenary celebrations or anything else, the buck stops at our heirachy.

No doubt the 100 anniversary was a huge disappointment, my belief is if we were still St George not St George Illawarra, it would have been better celebrated .
I think that's a given.

It'll be interesting to see how the Steelers get to celebrate their 40 year anniversary next year.

I've re-read this thread from start to finish and I'm still confused about what is actually being debated. Where is the actual publication of the record table of premierships that is being debated?

Isn't it simply a fact that Saint George won 15 premierships as a stand-alone Club and Saint George Illawarra have won 1 premiership as a joint-venture? (PS: I do know the difference between a JV and a merger).

If the table is of first grade premierships won by clubs currently playing in the NRL - then it's StGI: 1. (and, yes, Souths have a large number because they remained a stand-alone club - and all credit to them!). These are simply the facts.

If it's a table of first grade premierships won by clubs playing the game of rugby league in Australia - then it's Saint George : 15 and StGI : 1. These are facts too.

It's also undeniable that Saint George was an incredibly successful sports club but StGI hasn't been. The JV was always a terrible thing in my opinion. I couldn't believe it when the great Saint George club allowed its brand and heritage to be diluted in such a way. I'd love to see us go back to being a free-standing club again, but I expect corporate BS will dictate the future.

So, as far as I can see, it's just a matter of what's actually being tabulated. The NRL can publish a half-baked table if it chooses to. Surely, the StGI JV club, publishes a table showing 16 premierships doesn't it?
