No-one is saying Pearce is a better player than Cronk but there’s no doubt that the Roosters got Cronk cheap and were able to sweeten it with a bunch of other media, coaching stuff.

The great thing about money is that it allows people to trade things represented by money without relying on one-to-one trade balance. In the case of a salary cap (designated in Australian dollars), losing one highly paid player allowed his cap space to be redistributed across multiple players. It didn't all have to go to Tedesco or even Cooper Cronk. Thinking it does is simplistic. But if you think they waited ten seasons to realise Pearce was a suitable scapegoat you're unlikely to understand any of the other cost/benefit decisions that went into bringing in Tedesco and taking the opportunity to get Cronk on massive unders.

But they had more than two players on their books, and plenty of those off contract. With Tedesco taking up a large part of their cap, swapping Pearce for Cronk represented an opportunity to alleviate cap pressure. Even still, they weren't able to keep Latrell Mitchell, or do you think he was 'moved on' because he was unable to beat Smith/Cronk/Thurston/Slater in Origin?
