I was more referring to the insane clause in Foran's contract that let him walk out, but I didn't state that - my bad.

Hodgson, and Watmough, are fine players - but they were old, and injury-prone, when we signed them - I don't think they were good signings.
Hodgson missed a couple of seasons injured but the one right before we signed him was fine. If Watmough was injury prone he certainly played through his injuries, playing 20+ games every single year since 2006.

Hodgson had recovered from the knee injury (injured in 2020) and played 20 games (in 2021) when we signed him. He injured his knee again (in 2022) after we signed him (for 2023).

I still reckon it was a risky move to sign him, given his age.

A classy player, no doubt - but a desperate move by the club, imo.

Watmough missed a few games for us due to niggles, which is fine - you'd expect a player who has played for Australia, and NSW, on a regular basis, to miss some games.

But, again - it was the fact he was again, combined with the fact his body was starting to fail him.

Arthur no doubt signed him to be a leader, and that was possibly an astute move.

But on the field, he struggled.

A leader that didn’t want to be here, he admitted that. lol another Bea Arthur classic.

That’s a fair call. Haven’t seen it as much this year, but when their defence is on they are brutal.

To be fair, they are the benchmark.

But they way they can dominate without possession is unreal.

I wish our pack could do that.

But we are only good with ball in hand.

Which I guess is like most packs.

But Penrith are on track to win a fourth straight Premiership, so maybe we should try to emulate the way they play...

Definitely risky, like any signing, but desperate would’ve been matching the Dogs’ offer for Mahoney.

I agree.

Matching the Dogs' offer wouldn't have been smart.

But with the benefit of hindsight, maybe it would have been - while Mahoney isn't the best hooker in the game, he's easily top 5, and leagues ahead of whoever has played there for us since he departed.

Maybe springing out an extra $100k would have been worth the effort...

Is there a pack in the game that is effective when they are on the back foot?

The difference with good packs is they attack with their defense. They basically murder you if you get the ball within your 10-15mtrs.
Our side will not only have a weak kick chase but even if we turn over the ball 5mtrs out they let them roll out of their danger zone in 3 plays.
Really all Penrith are doing is chasing a nice Cleary kick and bashing the f**k out of you in defense. Win the field possesion and then wait for you to get tired and staying patient. It's not exactly breath taking footy like say us in 2009 or Tigers in 2005.
But hey it's effective.

Watmough was a has been. So was Hodgson. Fergo,MJ and Scott had some good seasons with us but all where on the downhill slide. Fergo and Scott's last year was rubbish. MJ remained decent and was a tip signing. But he was never that electric MJ that the Roosters had

All players experience a decline eventually. It doesn’t mean they immediately stop being first graders. If they were great at their peak then they should still be good enough for first grade a few years afterwards.

Sounds like they are on the front foot.
