Does Brad Arthur deserve the hype?

As mentioned earlier, he doesn't have the players. Hence signings. Do you expect a thorough attitude change overnight?

I expect more than I saw today. That was atrocious to say the least. He has had a year and 9 rounds to stake his claim.

Paul Mcgregor manged this at the Dragons with a squad that has about the same level of talent as us if not worse.

You can't judge a bloke on a team that isn't his. And this is still not his side. Shit this is still partly Kearneys side. Morgan, Sandow, Hoppa and Terepo are on big deals thanks to SK for example. As I said earlier, do you expect him to instill a structured, gutsy game in Sandow, a player who has never been structured or worked hard for the side in his career? He's doing what he can, and he needs to drop f**king Sef Paulo, but he can only do so much with the roster he has. But more and more he is building his side...I know we've been "rebuilding" for years and it's a shit of a term, but seriously, we still are thanks to a board that's gone through more coaches than underwear in that time. He's come into a club coming out of some of the worst mismanagement the NRL has probably ever seen, with poor coaches who got very little chance to actually finish what they started. This club is a disgusting mess and won't be fixed in two short seasons, but there are good signs for the first time in a long while

Bazal, I have never expected "fixed". All I expected was that we were on the mend. Do you think we are on the mend?

McGregor inherited a side that still remembers Bennett's discipline. He has tapped into that, their defence and their willingness to work hard has been outstanding.

Brad Arthur inherited a side that can't remember if their last coach was Sticky, or Ando, or Kearney, or maybe Brad Arthur when he was caretaking, and who have never been asked to play disciplined footy, except maybe by that long faced guy who was coach for a while (what was his name again, by the way?) but we didn't respect him so we ignored everything he said.

People expect miracles over night. It won't happen. It's moving in the right direction.... Just slowly.

Yes, I do. Mostly because of the players we're signing. We're signing leaders, not the bunch of headless chooks we have now. We're signing players who do work hard, from good cultures. That doesn't seem to mean much to some people and I have no idea why. It shows me that the coach understands the issues and understands that we need something from outside the club to fix them.

You have to remember we lost our best player. How could we reasonably be expected to improve markedly having that happen?

Hmm I just re-read this thread. Can't believe how many merkins reckon we will make the 8:

Rose coloured glasses.

In fairness to most, Peats and Watmough have yet to find their feet and most would have expected more. No one would have predicted Junior would miss 9 weeks. Sandow was top 10 in Dally Ms last year.

I think people just underestimated how f**ked we were without Hayne in the attacking structure. I certainly did, although I didn't predict anything there I'm happy to say I thought we were capable of going as high as 6th.

I predicted 11th (and even that is looking like a stretch) because I knew we were f**ked without Hayne and none of our signings - including Watmough - filled me with any confidence.

The problem is that we have been coping the same inconsistent poorly performing first grade team for 30 years. Yes we've had a few better years here and there, but only a handfull and when we do have a better year, the following year we usually fall in a heap again. We have been bog average for longer than some posters on here have been alive.
Its about the overall squad that is assembled every year. We have had such terrible talent identification for retaining and signing players. We have an, "oh well maybe next year' culture in our club where constantly successful clubs are so consistently successful because they simply have better people running their clubs.

Summed up perfectly, tho done people still don't get it, and have become accustomed to failure.

Does the team practise anything at training? Every time we are in the opposition's 20, we look like a rabble.

I have to admit that Arthur is starting to lose my faith in him.

The biggest issue for mine is that the players instructed with implementing the tactics are exceptionally poor at implementing tactics... This won't change this year.

And yet we've signed a NZ international, and two incumbent Origin players, and are targetting a current Kangaroos winger/fullback and an incumbent Origin winger.

Watmough hasn't set the world on fire, granted, but I think Arthur is already the best recruiter we've had since Smiths 2005 spending spree.

Scott and Foran will not be our saviours, and Johnson ? will not be coming on over, remember when we signed all these superstar Super League players and still won f**k all, how will next year be different to past disastrous 30 ?

And yet we are at the bottom of the table yet again. If you honestly think signing another elderly back rower, who's team got pumped by last placed Manly today, a winger and Foran will make us a grand final contender, your having a massive lend of yourself. We need a lot more than those three.

I see no real "team" improvement no matter who we have signed in coaching or playing personnel since 2009. Foran will most likely become one of the devoured ones unless there is a major mental adjustment in the club. My opinion only.

Agreed, Foran will fall in line and there in lies the problem he will be consumed with mediocrity, which our club has in abundance.

Losing Hayne has become an excuse to justify where we are. I ain't buying that. The other 15 teams don't have Hayne either. They just have a better spread of players across the park and are coached accordingly. We on the other hand continue to play dumb, sporadic football.
