Dragons approach Tony Smith

The board are just unwilling to look outside the old boys network. I don't believe he would be the best coach for the club. He wasn't even the best 5/8th at the time when he was at the club. He would however fit in with the boards traditional criteria.

GOOD CALL!!

I was always puzzled by his selection to play ,but his BROTHER was the coach.

Whatever happened to Peter coyne?

He was good in 92 and then left.

Unfortunately he left the club for more coin in the UK with Castleford. Only recently seen a game in 1992 with him at 5/8, brother Mark outside him at centre with Chariots Offiah and Ricky Walford on the wings plus Mick Potter at fullback. It was absolutely brilliant attack from one sideline to the other and Peter Coyne was sensational with his ball playing both short & long. It's quite sickening to see the level our club has sunk under boring priceys dragons footy.

the fact he wasn't the best 5/8 at the club is irrelevant to his coaching abilities Trent Robinson played a total of four games at two clubs and got the c**ks to a title so I don't think that should define his credentials

Tony or Brian, any will do.....agree with the above post, you don't need to be a great player to be a great coach.

Sure keep bringing the old boys back because that's been working well for us. Gibson, Maguire and Bennett were not great players either. By the same token just because you were an average player doesn't make you a great coach either. Just ask our recently replaced coach
My point was this club needs new blood.

No, being a good coach makes you a good coach.

His record speaks for itself, he is the best available.

How is Tony Smith not new blood??

He left the Dragons 20 years ago. His brother left the Dragons 19 years ago.

Neither have had anything to do with the club since.

How much newer does the blood need to be? Are you going to trawl through prospective coaches' family trees just to make sure there are no connections with the Dragons through their third cousins removed?

Tony Smith has achieved success in the UK. I cannot see him risking his career and standing by taking on the Dragons coaching whilst Doust & Young have too much power & control. It could possibly end his coaching career in the NRL in a short time. There are problems from the top down and need to be held accountable & addressed. While ever it remains the same, it would be a suicide mission for any aspiring coach. Even Brownie is not interested in a return and that says it all in the depths this club has sank. Only coaching success could be achieved with full control and say in all player recruitment, retention plus selecting his own support staff. Doust, Young and Co need to put in place....preferably right out of the place.

Tony Smith would be worth a crack. Hopefully he can bring some big boppers over from England on the cheap. I am sure he can get some interest.

I remember Wayne Bennett saying that he didn't inherit a basket case.
Well whoever gets the job this time around will be doing just that.
