Dragons ready to make shock swoop for Jarryd Hayne

St George Illawarra have emerged as a shock contender for the services of Jarryd Hayne if the cross-code star can’t strike a deal with Parramatta.
The Eels are due to return to training in less than a fortnight but Hayne remains unsigned. While the club is keen to retain the former NSW and Australian back, they need to move players in order to make it happen.
The Eels are attempting to offload several big-name players including Corey Norman, Mitchell Moses, Bevan French, Brad Takairangi and Michael Jennings. Jennings has been offered up to Newcastle, one of the few clubs that still have money remaining under the salary cap.
Hayne took to social media to express his frustration that the Eels are yet to table him an offer.

“5 weeks still waiting for a contract??” Hayne Tweeted recently.
Hayne’s situation isn’t lost on the Dragons, who could swoop should he slip through Parramatta’s grasp. The Red V believe they could cobble together a deal worth about $500,000 – the same amount Hayne was on last season - in what would be a stunning coup.
The Dragons have an outside back spot to fill after Nene Macdonald signed a three-year deal with North Queensland and Jason Nightingale called time on his career.
Hayne took a mammoth $700,000 pay cut to return to the blue and golds after a failed stint on the Gold Coast. Despite the salary sacrifice, there was some scepticism about the move given his messy exit from the Titans.
But after overcoming injuries, Hayne showed glimpses of his brilliant best, justifying the gamble and seemingly doing enough to earn another contract.
The Eels remain hopeful of sorting out a deal, but the interest from the Dragons will apply additional pressure to make it happen quickly.
