The St George Dragons were a club that existed in first-grade (Sydney Premiership/NSWRL/ARL/NRL) from 1921-1998.

After that, they weakly buckled at the knees to News Ltd and formed a joint venture with the Illawarra Steelers to create a new club, the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Whilst the St George Dragons may exist in lower grades, they no longer compete in the NRL.

As a new entity, their first-grade records started from scratch from 1999 onwards.

This is the unequivocal truth, and the history and record books will show as such. Ask any Rugby League historian or statistician and they will tell you the same.

Anything else is just delusions by Dragons fans saddened they didn't have the stones to stand up to News Limited and fight.

Them's the breaks.

That's a very simple way of looking at it. But thanks for sharing your thoughts.

There was a media attempt (in the 1920s?) to call the team the Illawarraites. Suffice to say, it never stuck.

Back in the day anything south of the Cooks River was often referred to as the Illawarra. Check out the street names in Marrickville and Arncliffe.

The Parish of St George is a very real district. Loads of businesses, including the Club's main sponsor call themselves St George- @bad boy bubby is just trolling, and doing a good job of it.

I've found that most people just call us Saints or St George. Sometimes Dragons. For the most part, I don't think people say St George-Illawarra, just as they don't say Canterbury-Bankstown or Manly-Warringah.
Kind of but not. My whole posts have been basically defending the supporters and have been against your management for starting this up when I think it isn't necessary.
Plus I don't think it will change anyway. That part of the post was just in jest, or light troll if you want.

I'm not quite sure exactly how Souths fans should recognise and be meekly respectful that the greater league community rallied to save their club.
You aren't either.

I bow to the master.
If I really wanted to have some fun I'd join the convo on the 16 premierships topic.
As in:
I have no issue with STG/ILL claiming the 16 premierships, as long as they take the three wooden spoons that came with Illawarra.
Hence forth the supporters wouldn't be able to say they hadnt won a spoon.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Thanks, needed a good laugh.

Did the St George Illawarra Dragons win or lose the 1992 prelim final?
Every premiership THE DRAGONS won, they won!!
They didn't just go kick a ball to no one and SCAB one of those premierships like souffs did. Besides who won 2021 btw, sure as shit wasn't souffs

Thanks rain man, and by your logic souths never participated in 2 seasons of the NRL, therefore when they did return thet too were a new entity... so yeah 1 premiership each then..

Besides i don't think the dragons have ever left the competition, unlike the rabbits

Red V jersey has to stay though, it's iconic. Away should be the full red Steelers get up with the thin white hoops. Heritage the red & white hoops design. Logo can change. Name shouldn't. As I've said, I just call them Saints or lizards or Dragons. Illawarra is a breezy away day.

If it was about what fans refer to their team as, Canberra would be known as the f**king Bald Lesbian Green Shirted f**ked Up Merkin Pricks Who Continually Ruin My f**king Life.
Dude put the phone down, get in the car drive up the highway, and pick any team in sydney to go for... I'll be waiting here to greet you in st.clair... you don't have to follow ricky or the green machine anymore.... PUT THE GUN DOWN MAN!

The Dragons CEO was looking at merging with the Roosters in the early 90s. Brian Smith said he left for Parramatta because St George had the "stench of death".

Nothing pleases me more than opposition supporters providing guidance on such things.

It was Andrew Ettinghausen who once said, "I don't care which team you support, as long you support Rugby League." Wise words.

It was on that fishing show he used to host. I thought ET sounded pretty smart, for a Cronulla boy.

Someone claimed the Tiger is marketable, Collingwood says the magpie is on par if not bigger.

If the tigers brand was dropped, whatever fans were lost would be rekindled by tens of thousands of fans who left the JV at the horrid treatment of the Magpies and went elsewhere.

Maybe if Balmain wasn't broke and had a functioning leagues club and juniors system, they'd be able to help the image?

Both Balmain and Wests were basket cases in the late 90s. Just like Souths, being loyal to the ARL basically killed them. If any of those clubs took the News Ltd money like Cronulla and Penrith did, then they'd most likely still be around today as single entities. Souths were lucky Russell and Holmes-a-court bought the club, because they were heading nowhere fast without a Leagues Club and the footy club operated as if it were still the 70s. A strong board and hiring Richo transformed that club into what it is today.

Wests Tigers in 2022 is Western Suburbs Magpies in just about every sense except for the branding of Magpies, and that won't change because Wests Tigers NRL brand, name, and logo are owned by the ARL commission. Even Concord and the surrounding area, although Balmain from a pathways perspective now, has historical links to Western Suburbs considering the CoE is practically on the grounds of the original Magpies home ground of St Lukes Park. And the new Leagues Club to be built on the old Tigers Leagues club site will be owned and operated by Wests Ashfield.
