Dragons exploring name change possibility

I'd like to add a hint of rationality and reasoned debate:
It's the Saint George Dragons for fks sake! If you're a supporter nobody gives a rat's arse if you come from Dapto or the Dandenongs. Who gives a sht about Illawarra? Fk off! Cronulla can get fkd too! The Dragons come from Kogarah and we own everything from Bexley North to the Cooks River, out to the islands off the coast and south to Cooma.
Pinball Collector: Relax. I’m joking, of course.

To be fair, Bazza was a Steeler. If they change their name back to St George Dragons then they can claim Bazza never played for this club.

It’s the only choice they have.

The Northern Eagles played on the NRL from 2002-2002 and 2016-2018.

Therefore Twent never coached Manly.

Man that deepfake technology has gotten real good.
Sorry i made a mistake... it was 4 tries in 7 minutes, not 4 tries in the last 7 minutes...
..Manly still had like 5 minutes left of the game

Souths only have one premiership in the NRL era, before that they were booted out...
I don't see how the "Dragons" are any different from Souths in that respect, regardless if they merged with Illawarra... Dragons have always been in the comp since 1921... they (premierships) should all count..
Fancy saying they don't when the Roosters, Bulldogs & Tigers, all changed their name to "Sydney" at one stage or another through out the 90s... does the roosters premierships not count pre "Sydney City"?
Then what about Manly dropping warringah, or becoming Northern Eagles, then reverting?
are we discounting all their premierships prior to that...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Thanks, needed a good laugh.

Did the St George Illawarra Dragons win or lose the 1992 prelim final?

Lmao oh no no no no no, you don't get to sweep your merger status under the rug just like that.

I hope the Steelers faithful throw the grenades out of the cot.
Who’s won a premiership more recently? A merger status club or a Brisbane 1 trick pony?

Would the St George power brokers ever try a Manly move?

It's so much like Wests Tigers (iirc it's 90/10 in Magpies favour) but the original board who crafted the JV agreement were crafty on changing names, colours, logos etc. Wests have the heritage deed, not sure what Saints have.
It's a different agreement to what they had in the Northern Eagles. The St George-Illawarra Joint Venture gets reviewed every 5 or 6 years. The review can be for a range of changes - including name changes and even dissolving the JV business arrangement.

Some people think name changes or rebranding are the be-all and end-all of everything, but that's not how these things work.

I understand the Manly-North Sydney agreement had a takeover clause where the NRL licence would go back to Manly.

Weren’t the st George side bailed out by the nrl with a big loan? Win is Wollongong money.
No, never bailed out. They had a loan deal that was temporary, it was minor. WIN is not just Wollongong. You really need to think bigger.

I'm pretty sure MEDIA EXPERT AFL Red knows all about the media industry in Australia. He sits on the board of WIN I believe.

One of those kids is not like the other:
Canterbury is an actual suburb
Bankstown is an actual suburb
Cronulla is an actual suburb
Sutherland is an actual suburb
Manly is an actual suburb
Warringah is an actual suburb
Illawarra is a region
St. George is a made up area, like you said.
The fact they are still lighting this fuse after 23 years is laughable.
Why the hell would their incompetent board start this up other than to distract their fans from the real issues?
It isn’t made up actually. It is not a suburb, but rather one of the Parish area of Sydney as used for Land Titles.

I am a little surprised no one has gone for St George as the team/club name with “Illawarra Dragons” as the nick name.
So they’d be the St George Illawarra Dragons. :)

(Illawarra also has been used as a descriptor within the area of the St George Parish)

There was a media attempt (in the 1920s?) to call the team the Illawarraites. Suffice to say, it never stuck.

Back in the day anything south of the Cooks River was often referred to as the Illawarra. Check out the street names in Marrickville and Arncliffe.

The Parish of St George is a very real district. Loads of businesses, including the Club's main sponsor call themselves St George- @bad boy bubby is just trolling, and doing a good job of it.

I've found that most people just call us Saints or St George. Sometimes Dragons. For the most part, I don't think people say St George-Illawarra, just as they don't say Canterbury-Bankstown or Manly-Warringah.

Yes, I call them Saints 90% of the time.
