Dragons Skipper In 2013

I would like to see the Dragons pick a quick thinking player who can read the mood of the game well and make good on field decisions. this player would also need to have the respect of most players, the coach and fans. Good off and on field behavour, good public speaking skills and plenty of football experience.

I think Soward is the man.

very good point, and as much as i liked hornby this was his main downfall. he was very mechanical in his game plan and rarely deviated from this regardless of how the match was panning out.
he needed to play what was in front of him more often..
soward does a bit of this already but a half that can do this is needed..

My opinion of Price is based on how the team performs on the field each week.Baffling team selections, inconsistent performances tells me that Price is not experienced enought to be a 1st grade coach .We have been extremely poor in too many games and yes while it is the players you could blame ,but we are talking about premiership players who previously set a high standard. His script like press conferences suggests he does not have answers .

correct, good points.
i dont mind a team missing the finals with a new coach on board if you can see over the period of 26 weeks the team is improving and building towards a solid game plan..
if we finished 12th but Price at least demonstrated this i would be happy to see him go aroud another 12 months and continue to build...

but we are nearly finished the 26 weeks, add to that he had a full pre seaosn with the team and at the moment we are actually worse off then when the season started.. no improvement in sight, as you mentioned baffling team selections, no strategy and Price talks the same speech each week...
based on this i dont have a lot of confidence in him right now..

This is St George...we don't buy captains!
For sheer entertainment value I'd go Fien for skipper.
He was chatting away like he was at the team BBQ at a press conference last year.
He copped more than the one dirty look from Creeping as well!

Soward is probably our best "quick thinking" player but he's also a confidence player so if he's "on" he can play smart and influence.

If you look at the successful clubs they generally have 2-3 players that are quick thinkers, play smart and are able to as you say 'read the mood' of the game and do what is necessary to win. The Storm have the best "thinker" in the game in C Smith. Manly have great halfs and a smart centre in Lyons.

We need another "quick thinker" to replace Hornby.

Cooper states in this interview that he does not want the Captaincy as he is only around for one more year. In his opinion Creagh would make a good Captain

Yep, seems like there is a good chance its Creagh based on that chat, which is one of the best choices we have, he can lead from the front.

Soward wasnt actually mentioned as a potential captain, whether that was just coincidence I dunno.. but then he did also get dropped recently so whatever is going on back there, I dont think he is really in a position to be captain anyway.

Edit: Realisation that they wouldnt want to announce anything till after Hornbys last game.

BEN Creagh is the man to captain St George Illawarra in 2013, with Dragons greats anointing him "the perfect leader" for one of the toughest periods in the club's history.

The Sunday Telegraph has been told Creagh is set to take over as skipper of the Dragons following the retirement of veteran halfback Ben Hornby.

Missing the playoffs this year with the worst attacking record in NRL, Creagh has the task of rebuilding a relatively inexperienced squad alongside rookie coach Steve Price. After winning the 2010 grand final under Wayne Bennett, the Dragons have since lost not only the super-coach, but experienced stars Hornby, Dean Young, Mark Gasnier, Darius Boyd, Jeremy Smith and Neville Costigan.

But former club captain Trent Barrett has backed the appointment of Creagh. "Things are going to be tough for the Dragons but Benny Creagh is the perfect man to lead them through it," Barrett said. "Ben's attitude, his passion, the way he carries himself and his efforts in games and at training ... it all ensures he warrants the position. The captaincy will sit well with him because not only is he happy to speak his mind, what he's done in the past, both on and off the field, has earned him the role. There isn't anything he needs to change going forward."

Former NSW utility Shaun Timmins agreed. "Ben has a massive challenge ahead of him because there's a real changing of the guard at the club right now," Timmins said. "But he's already established himself as a leader, so this is the obvious next step. The guy is a lot tougher than he gets credit for. I know Benny copped a bit for that stuff in Origin a few years ago, but he plays hard, trains hard. He's also studying a university degree. Younger players notice stuff like that, how he manages to put in despite having so much on, and respect him for it."

There's no denying Saints are a club under pressure with reports that management will make a play for premiership-winning coach Craig Bellamy next season. Star five-eighth Jamie Soward will also be looking to find the form that won him a NSW Origin jersey.
"Having lost a lot of experience, they know they're going to go through a tough period," Barrett said. "But that's why you give the captaincy to someone like Ben Creagh, a footballer who you know will handle the pressure when it's on. But the Dragons are going to need more than just Ben to play the leadership role. With what they have ahead of them, it takes five, maybe six guys to put their hand up."

If true, then congratulations Ben Creagh. Part of a very proud list of club captains.
