From what's being discussed on JA it's a miracle that anyone will come to the Dragons and we are more than likely to lose players and replace them with the journeymen wanting their last hurrah.

Very depressing!
But recruitment are doing a fine job thank you very much!

Possm, nothing to do with recruitment, please get off your agenda for just once and look at the big picture.
You've got to be joking! The make up of our top 30 squad has everything to do with our recruitment. Take a good look at backs in our top 30 and it takes me back to the days we had 3 grades. Most of the outside backs we have would fit right into reserve grade and third grade.

Our roster isn’t that bad ( except for one dynamite winger and centre )
It’s the Coach that kills us

I agree its the coach that is largely to blame , but you say 1 winger and 1 centre. I think we need more than that for our backline.

Our 1 through 5 is either bog average or yet to be shown up as first grade material. Lafai on his day, goes well, Lomax may come good, Dufty ... no idea.

That makes me sad because you are right

There's some rumour floating that Campbell-Gillard wants out of the Pennies. If Peachey returns maybe there's a chance he'll be released.....fingers crossed!! He would be a good pickup to replace JDB

2 years ago I would of jumped at it. Then last year as long as he has had that porn star mow he starts running and turning his hip and back into the line. Tamou of all people is now overshadowing him. It is a no from me and there are reasons he was overlooked for origin. I dont know what happened to him but he offers zip ATM. Sorry rant over but please god... no.

Recruitment 101 aye Possm.
You tend to forget in defence of Millward that based on our current coaching structure we have to pay overs to attract anyone of any worth. So you want Millward to get all those good players here and get the deals done. Where are the 3rd parties to assist him.
Guess what..we do it your way and have even less depth. Our cap will be bled with star backs and a couple of forwards,,,but thats all... if you were recruting.
Recruitments hands are tied with money we have to fork out to stars to get em or keep em. It is not their fault our board or management choose coaches that dont really attract.
e.g. Look at Hunt...I like him but even at 950K odd we paid a little too much.
Just Widdop, Hunt, Frizz & Vaughan alone would take up nearly 1/3 of cap. Then you got both Sims, JDB and Lafia..another $2 mill. There is 1/2 cap gone in 8 players...22 to go!

All of the old boys, including Johnston, Millward and Mary, have their talking points which usually consist of a list of excuses why they have not performed to expectations.

SGI management devised this ridiculous system of splitting recruitment/pathways/retention away from the head coach. In the normal world, if the head coach is not capable of SUPERVISING those roles, he should not be appointed head coach as this is a very important element in the formula to success.

Agreed. When your coaching staff is not quality, then to attract quality players because of this, the club pays overs and these players just go through the motions without any loyalty to the club unfortunately imo.

So the real question to ask is why isn't our coaching staff top quality and why does our recruitment/pathways/retention staff have difficulty in securing good players in a competitive environment?

The simple answer is that old boys have made deals to appoint old boys in the those positions rather than the most qualified and experienced available.

Dont all clubs have a recruitment / retention manager or person that works with the coach? and all clubs have people looking at young kids through trials for SG ball to Flegg and improving their performances..We just call it pathways.

What is the difference at our club. How do you know what McGregor gets involved in. Because he said in 1 press conference he wants to not be involved with the money and fitting in players next year and beyond because of the complexities and rules of the cap etc.
I agree with that,. he is still involved with a say re hiring and firing.
Do you know what you are talking about.
One fact you should consider...a head NRL coach does not have the time to supervise performance and work with the kids who are not selected for the training squad of 30-35.
That is what pathways and lower grade coaching staff work together towards, but does not mean he does not go and watch a game or two keeping his eye on talent that are given recommendations.

We have answered why. So explain how is that Millwards recruitment's fault and how should he do things your way with hands tied?

Most clubs and we used to have, a recruitment/pathways/retention staff that work/reports to, the head coach. The head coach then reports to the CEO or in some clubs the football manager.
