all these panel vans parking outside to get a cheap thrill.

Well you'd expect that when you use the words Panel Van and Drive In in the same sentance.

speaking of old rusty screens I remember seeing one at Rutherford (On the other side of Maitland heading towards the Upper Hunter)

Last one I went to was the old Skyline Drive In that was at Lambton. There's now a whole heap of housing on that land now.

Yeah I remember going to the drive-in a few times at Gateshead. My parents took us there when we were kids for a few double features. I think the first one we went to was Gremlins followed by Night Patrol or something like that. Anyway I think my parents hoped we would be asleep by the second movie. The second trip we made was to see Footrot Flats and something else. I am sure we also went a few times to see one of the World Safari movies with Alby Mangels...hahaha remember him?
Anyway I think there used to be one here in Goulburn as well but it is long closed down.

The video (vhs and beta) was the beginning of the end for drive ins. I think the one at gateshead closed late 1980s and is now industrial. I really wish there was more of them but technology has just taken control these days

Funnily enough IanG, the last movie I saw at the Drive In was ET also, I saw it at Bass Hill.

Queue X Files theme. The last Drive-In movie I saw was ET........

Out near Narrellan in the "80's when we lived in Woodbine on the hill above Cambo. They were fantastic, drinks, snacks and whatever else you wanted in the car. Too good.

yeah i miss at the drive-in as well. takes me back to my angst-fueled youth moshing in my room to "one armed scissor" through the good ole cd player (remember those?), before all this i-pod and mp3 business.
don't get me wrong; the mars volta are a great band in their own right, and i respect that cedric and omar wanted to head in a new direction before things got stale, but i can't help but get a bit nostalgic at times and wish that they'd bring the band back together for one last tour, it'd bring a smile to this weary fossil's face.

Funny you should mention that roboshark, one of my greatest memories is from riding on something like an open carousel, going flat out and hanging on for dear life.

They looked something like this: (although in a bit better condition )
