Easts Tigers Enter Expansion Race

They're merging with jets so clearly dolphins in box seat.

I favour dolphins because they represent large & growing population base to north This seperates them from broncos & gives them best chance to gain support.

I've said this a million times but team playing out of lang park, called Brisbane, claiming to represent the whole of the city really doesn't give ppl much reason to support them, because a team like that already exists - for over 30 years too.

Telling that both bombers & now tigers linked with Jets who are unapologetically based in Ipswich. Seems NRL favours geographical difference & growth areas
If the NRL favoured geographical difference then they wouldn't want Brisbane 2 to use Lang Park as it's home ground.

Firehawks are the only bid that can play at Lang Park and while having a training base close by. They're also based on the south-eastern side of town, whereas the Broncos are on the north-western side.

Who says they want lang park every week?? Merger with will probably see them eventually play at new stadium in ipswich

If the Ipswich merger comes off a south brisbane jets or firehawks gives enough difference for sure. It would be very similar to freo coming in to the Perth afl scene. It would also have the cash to start with a bang. This is why I favour them over dolphins whose main target audience is a very long way from Suncorp.

Not like Logan or Ipswich huh?! Morton Bay boundary like 19 minutes away from lang park

I'm going on what I've read in the paper and on here.

I'm not sure the Queensland Gov wants to build a new stadium. The best bet for the Jets would be to saddle up with a consortium that wants to base a team out of Ipswich so they can have a stadium that's in use all year long.

Merger with tigers will probably be same deal with bombers & bid will retain desire to eventually move to Ipswich. Makes no sense otherwise

If tigers/hawks built a 10-15k stadium within inner Brisbane then it would likely become the Brisbane roar full-time home, as they are struggling for crowds and support while playing out of Redcliffe

Are you referring to its outer southern suburbs like Samford and Albany Creek?

That's the region thst used to be known as Pine Rivers. Moreton Bay Region is an amalgamation of Pine Rivers, Redcliffe and Caboolture. The Pine Rivers region is closed to Brisbane. The old Redcliffe district is in the east and Caboolture to the north.

A more centralised urban part of the old Pine Rivers region would be Warner, which is 26 minutes away. Pretty close. Redcliffe is 43 minutes away, which isn't too bad. Caboolture is 57 minutes away. It's not too far away, but far enough to impact crowds at Lang Park on a Thurs/Fri night.

Firehawks have the advantage of having more urbanised suburbs closer to Lang Park within the area they will draw most of their fans from.

They're redeveloping Langlands Park into a 5k stadium, so no chance of that happening. It was mentioned in last year's annual report.

A merged bid wouldnt just be drawing from Ipswich or Logan though, it would be targeting everyone south of the river which is a massive population within easy travel of Suncorp. To get even close to that population reach for dolphins would take the whole of Moreton bay region, much of which is 45-60mins plus travel from Suncorp.

Team names should be inclusive & not alienate ppl from different backgrounds. It's not 1983 anymore
The name Smiths would no more alienate non-Anglo people than the St. George Dragons does, or the Warriors tekoteko head logo does non-Maori people, the Raiders Viking theme does non-Scandinavian people, etc, etc.

I'd suggest anybody that does feel uncomfortable with such brand motifs are the ones with the problem.

Great, that's the same pool broncos draw from.

Then there's nothing in it for Jets. When merged with Bombers retained name & desired location

Thanks for telling what ppl can & can't be alienated by. Didn't know racial issues could be so effectively managed just like that.

Well the favorite will play games at 3 venues so, so much for that.
Why do you assume that they're the favourite?

Just because the Daily Telegraph tells you so?

Never said you couldn't feel 'alienated', just suggested that that alienation was your own prejudice manifesting it's self rather than the name Smith actually alienating you in any substantive way.

Strathpine was the Pine Rivers village centre and it's almost as close to Brisbane CBD than Redcliffe. I grew up in the area and I don't think people from Strathpine give a shit about Redcliffe. They are just as likely to support a team from the south side of Brisbane than they are Redcliffe. So just because Redcliffe claims it represents all of "Moreton Bay" doesn't mean they do...

It will take a generation or two for Dolphins to develop a following across Moreton Bay.

They would probably be better off identifying as a Brisbane-wide team, but if they start playing games out of the Sunshine Coast and Dolphin Oval them it will alienate people on the southside.

Easts are taking the smart approach of trying to draw support from all over the city. I think their model will be more successful.
