Yeah, top 17 players whose contracts were up, and unwanted anywhere else. How good do players go when their futures are completely up in the air? If we'd re-signed them (and not tried to palm off half the team) we would have won a few more games. We probably would have avoided the spoon.

But Sticky ripped the Bandaid off in one go. Blam! It's not his fault he couldn't get rid of some players still under contract; it's not up to the coach, it's up to the player and the other clubs.

I don't think so Pou. He gambled by trying to do it so publicly. At that stage he thought he would be here this year and that they would surely move on seeing he was going to be the coach. However he lied to everyone and took the Raiders job when deep down he knew that he wasn't the coach to go on with the job. (Even his mate Gould said the same thing.). The players who were on the shit list then regained their faith and stayed.

To be fair, he did get rid of players who were still under contract... like Maitua, Ryan, and Blair for example. He was never going to be able to get rid of all of them.

Good point. However if he did stay as the re-builder that he promised he was the others may have left also. He only half finished what he started.

Yeah you're right. I like the fact one of the first things he did when he arrived was sign up our best juniors though, something the club's neglected for a while. But only time will tell whether they were the right ones or not.

Stuart didn't sign anyone when he first arrived. Tanginoa, Pauli and Pritchard were extended before Stuart was at the club, and Toutai, Radradra and Edwards were still off contract in July.

Yeah and he deserves every bit of criticism he gets for that because it was a dog act. It's probably best we no longer have him here if his heart wasn't in it. I'm just saying he did a few things that were necessary and even if he only half finished the job at least he started it.

Are you sure about that? I seem to recall Stagger or someone knowledgeable stating they were re-signed around December 2012 even though the news wasn't released till later.

They were re-signed in mid 2012 when we were struggling to sign anyone for 2013. I remember because it was a sign we were focusing on junior retention under the blokes who said it would be a priority.

If I remember correctly you were one of the people on here who gave it to me when I very early on gave it to him and labelled him a pretender.

Apologies if I am mistaken.

I just said I liked what he did, like it or not we had a S**t team last year and were never going to do anything but finish last. Ricky needed to make huge changes, and he did that. We will start seeing the rewards from this year. Not many coaches have the balls to do what Ricky did last year.

Do I like how he left our club? No, and I couldn't care less about him now, but he did do our club a massive favor by being that d**k who got rid of players other coaches wouldn't.

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur puts electric style back in Eels attack

Dean Ritchie
The Daily Telegraph
March 02, 2014 11:00PM

New coach Brad Arthur will dump the club’s conservative attacking approach and implement a new flamboyant playing style where players will be told to “back themselves.’’

“I don’t want them to be nervous or baulk,’’ Arthur said.

The exciting new approach comes on the back of damning statistics showing Parramatta has an abysmal tryscoring record over the past four years.

Parramatta crossed just 57 times in 24 matches last season - the lowest amount of any side in the NRL.

The previous year they finished second last in the NRL with just 73 tries. The Eels were equal last in 2011 and second last in 2010.

Arthur has told his players go “play some footy’’.

“We want high completions but we also want to be playing a bit of footy,’’ Arthur told The Daily Telegraph.

“We have been encouraging our forwards to pass and off-load. I want them to play what they see and hopefully that will create a few points.

“I want them to back themselves. That is how we have trained in the off-season.

“There is a fine line there and an error will bring consequences. That being having to defend a set.

“We need to complete our sets and build pressure but you don’t get many opportunities so, when you do, you have to take them.

“I don’t want them being nervous or baulk. If they execute well, there shouldn’t be a problem.’’

The recruitment of former NSW star Will Hopoate will certainly help Parramatta’s trycoring capabilities.

He will be named in the centres for next Sunday night’s match against New Zealand and finally offer some support for Jarryd Hayne.

“(But) for Will to finish off we have to create opportunities on the inside otherwise there won’t be any opportunities,’’ Arthur said.

Arthur is facing a monumental first-up challenge.

Check out these Fox Sports stats.

* The Eels have won just 11 games in the past two seasons for a winning percentage of only 22.9 per cent.

* Since the 2009 grand final, Parramatta has won just 27 of 96 games for a winning ratio of only 28.8 per cent.

* Parramatta has not won away from home since round 21, 2012. In that game, they beat Broncos at Suncorp Stadium (42-22).

* The Eels are currently on a 15 game losing streak away from home.

* Parramatta has run last in the past two years.

“We don’t want to be flicking balls out of their backsides but we have worked hard on our skills,’’ Arthur said.

Another team looking to exit the doldrums is Wests Tigers, who won just seven games last season.

Prop Keith Gollway though said his side won’t be playing under any pressure this season.

“I think it’s good that nobody really rates us this year,’’ said Galloway.

“I suppose now the media don’t really expect us to go well this year, so it’s actually a good thing for the club to use to use this year.

“A lot of guys here have some points to prove after last season.”

Surprising he's leaving sandow out (by all accounts). At a guess sandow would be more suited to 'parra ball' and Kelly to a more structured style.

I think it is the right move what Arthur is doing in relation to Sandow. If he whinges and carries on he is not the right player to wear the jersey. We have tried to help him both on and off the field. Now it is time for him to take some responsibility and help himself or his career ends.

Agreed avenger. If sandow wants it bad enough, he'll get a recall.

And also, it's smart to expect any serious rehabilitation to take time and not assume his issues have been fixed in one off season and that waltzing straight back to first grade just because there is a new coach will change anything.

Heya Bigfella,
I am not sure the off field issue of Sandow has much to do with whether he plays NRL or Wenty.

From what I hear there was never a correlation between the 2 as the club didn't and still don't associate his off field problems with his on field performances.

I don't agree it is as simple as Sandow wanting it enough.

Firstly Kelly (assuming he gets Rnd 1) has to under perform.
Secondly BA has to think Sandows game and style suits what he wants from the team.

Only then will Sandows form and training get him back in First Grade. Unless of course the Board and or Management get involved in team selection and decide they want the expensive asset on the field bringing supporters in the gate.

I feel whoever our halfback is will struggle until our pack performs, pure and simple. Saying Kelly or Sandow is better is a moot point until our pack performs like they should.

Agree 100%.
All the Sandow haters seem to forget that he got all the player of the year points on here in the early rounds last year WHEN our forwards were dominating.
