Pearce gives thanks to Taylor for form revival

Date
September 30, 2013

Brad Walter
Chief Rugby League Writer

Sydney Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce has praised assistant coach Jason Taylor for helping him to reach the form he hopes will not only deliver a premiership but also finally silence his critics.

Pearce, the NSW Origin halfback, has been in career-best form and said the work that Taylor had done with him and five-eighth James Maloney had been a key reason.

''Jason Taylor has helped my game a lot, especially in attack,'' Pearce said of the former South Sydney and Parramatta coach, who has been linked with a return to the Eels as head coach next season.

''Jason Taylor puts all our attacking structures together and having him as a one-on-one halfback coach for me and Jimmy is great, and I owe him a lot. He is as smart as any coach going around as far as halfback play and attacking play goes.''

After playing 12 Origins for the Blues, Pearce has worn much of the blame for the team's failure to end Queensland's record winning streak during that period but the 24-year-old has the chance to show he is a big-game player in Sunday's grand final against Manly.

''Obviously it was disappointing but I have moved on from that now and to win a comp it would mean more to me because you are with these boys - and it is not just for the boys you play with but everyone else involved in the club,'' Pearce said.

''I have been here for a while now, so it is time to do it. I feel like I have been playing good for the Roosters for most of the season but I have felt like I have a little bit more time since I have come back from Origin.''

Pearce, whose father Wayne played in two losing grand finals for Balmain, said he hoped to finally win one for the family after being a member of the 2010 Roosters team beaten by St George Illawarra in that year's decider.

He said he was a more mature player now.

''There's a lot different. Back then we were on a bit of a tidal wave,'' Pearce said of comparisons between 2010 and this year.

''It was all really exciting and each game we won in the semis was like a mini grand final.

''We feel a lot more composed this year, I feel we've earned being in this position.''

Taylor sounds like he would be an excellent assistant coach. I wonder if he's interested in coming and being one of our assistant coaches?

Because of the delays thus far in making an announcement, I dare say it's probably someone still involved in the GF.

It would have to be either JT or brad Arthur. The other candidate still involved, would be da.

Or maybe our preferred candidate is one of the three involved in the Finals (JT, Arthur or Paul Green), but they are considering going to NQ, and are waiting til season is over to finalise negotiations. I suspect Green will go to NQ, but who knows.

Either the candidate is stil involved in the grand final or we're still f**king around.

Or maybe no one half decent wants the job?

Let's hope it's the former

Or perhaps we are going through a rather detailed recruitment process and not relying singularly on word of mouth, reputations, jobs for the boys, fan pressure, media-imposed deadlines, 'best available', 'used to be here', players want him, etc., etc.

If I was hiring for one of the most important roles in my company and one that would set the future direction, I would give my CEO more than a week in the job before worrying about when he is going to finish recruitment and make somebody an offer.

The previous coach left the joint about 3 weeks ago and Seward has been in the role 3 days. It is the off-season and he needs to get this right. Give the guy a f**k'en chance people.

I agree, its a very important decision, one that we must get right, but you don't reckon there's some chance we can't get our shit together? It's not like there's a shortage of quality candidates.

Or shouldn't we believe anything the media says about us?

Im feeling like the next couple of appointments are huge for us . If we get it right and hold onto our recruits then I think we can we start to turn the corner next year (on the field at least)

However if we f**k up the coach/coaching structure we'll continue on our current course.

Fingers crossed.

The double negatives (don't and can't) in the same question kinda confused me, but I think you are asking whether I think we can get our shit together and hire the right coach. Personally I think we can. And I have everything crossed that we will. However hiring the right coach isn't always recognised at the time you recruit them, it is recognised only once they have achieved something (a little bit like recruiting a player who then gets a bad run of injuries - it doesn't take away from the recruitment, but it does mean you didn't get what you paid for).

Or shouldn't we believe anything the media says about us?

Where there is smoke there is fire, however I am hopeful in our case the media are just dragging out the issues we have had in the past to sell papers.

Yes, we have definitely been in the basket case category for our administration and board issues over the last 12-24 months. The thing to understand is that the 3P faction have little or no sway over the NRL team any more. The current board comprises only 5 directors (not the 7 it should have) and of these 5, 4 were elected in April as part of the Sharp ticket. So there really isn't a split board at the NRL level. Spagnolo and his team are still the majority in the PDRLC board, however they don't have a say in the NRL team. So continued media crap about split boards, in-fighting, etc. are really yesterdays news and I personally don't believe about 90% of it.

We have a new CEO who seems from very brief exposure, to know what he is on about and to be quite professional. We seem to have a board that has recognised that there needs to be an improved focus on the day to day management of the "footy side of things" and hopefully they will approve a structure that allows it to grow and a budget that enables it to become a reality.

Im feeling like the next couple of appointments are huge for us . If we get it right and hold onto our recruits then I think we can we start to turn the corner next year (on the field at least)

Agreed - fingers crossed.

He set up my NRL club's 'academy' after that shit was closed down in 2006. And he copped nothing but abuse for it.

So you could say I've got a soft spot for him. Same with Brian Smith.

I think the only issue of potential short-term urgency re the coaching decision is any flow on effect to players seeking to exercise release clauses. Now, of course, that threat may be immaterial.....I just don't know. Doesn't look like any of the players apparently affected are in a great hurry.
