If a try is scored from a play does that mean that there is no lba credited and just a ta?

If there is a line break then the person who passed it gets credited with both a try assist and LBA as long as it was the passer that created the line break.

I reckon semi and Norman should have some then?

Only if you pass before the line, and the line is actually broken.

So, for example, when Semi did the quick hands (vs Broncos), not a LBA since the line was still sliding, I think it is Norman who puts Tonga 'through' the line. Probably Tonga gets the credit for that one by putting Semi away - although one could fairly argue that he was already into the backfield when he passed to Semi?

When else would Semi have had one? [not saying he wouldn't have, just I can't recall - which doesn't say much]

Some might think of Hayne's tries against the Warriors and Manly, though I don't see either as a LBA. Actually the one against the Warriors could be an LBA. It depends on who made the line break - Radradra or Hayne. Either way, Semi got the try assist.

assists in nrl stats, from what i can gather, are awarded too easily.

for me, if the player making the line break or scoring the try doesn't really have to do too much, then the assist should get credited. thing is you get a guy like cooper cronk who can place a kick very well but the contest for the ball is 50/50 and his catcher pulls the ball down (or the defensive player makes an error and the attacking player cleans up) then he gets the try assist. similarly if a player belts through two defenders, the guy that threw the ball to them gets a line break assist, even though it was the runner's doing the line was broken and not the passer's ability.

i think they're one of the most mis-used stats in the game.

Try assists can be worse. The guy that smashes through 3 tackles, breaks the line and runs 80m only to send the ball two passes inside for the try to be scored wont often get a try assist. Instead it will go to his initial support runner who only had to take the ball and the pass it onto the eventual try scorer.
