Rugby league legend Laurie Daley doesn’t believe Eels halfback Mitchell Moses has evolved his game as a halfback and needs to make better decisions at critical moments.
Moses admitted he wants to get his running game back after going for more of a game management type of role in 2020, but Daley doesn’t believe he got either approach right last season.
“To be perfectly honest I didn’t see a great deal of change,” Daley told
The Big Sports Breakfast.
“The thing with Mitchell is he has all the skills, but as a halfback you have got to get the right balance.
“You’ve got to be able to challenge the line and get a team around and manage the team exceptionally well. But you have got to make the right decisions at the right time.
“They have a term for it in cricket, a flat track bully.”
Moses finished with just nine try assists and five linebreaks from 19 games last season, as the Eels finished fourth and were bundled out of the finals in straight sets.
Daley believes Moses needs to simplify his approach and make the right play depending on the game situation more often.
“In rugby league as a halfback the pressure is applied and your decision making needs to be at its best when you are under the pump,” Daley explained.
“Whether you have done a lot of defence and then you get the ball back or whatever it my be, but when you are under the pump in the critical moments at critical times you have to come up with the right play.
“Wether that is finding touch or keeping the ball in play. Whether it is playing short or playing out the back. Whether it is a show and go and dig into the line or turn someone under.
“These are the options that Mitchell Moses has at his disposal, but I think at times he just gets a little bit confused knowing which one to pull out of his kitbag.

“That’s my only criticism of Mitch. He has got to understand what play he needs to use at the right time because he has got it all.”
Now with 150 games of NRL experience, the 26-year-old is coming into the prime years for playmakers in rugby league.
However if Moses wants to reach the heights of the top halfbacks in the game, Daley believes he needs to stop going for the miracle plays at crucial moments.
“The key is to not overcomplicate things and to realise sometimes the simple play is more effective than the big play and I think that is where Mitch gets confused,” Daley said.
“I think at times he has always gone for the big play and if it comes off it looks great and in a normal regular season game it can happen.
“But then the bigger the game the harder it is to pull off those plays. And then if you don’t pull them off you can look foolish.
“I think Mitch would be better served by playing that game where he keeps thinking about the simple play being the effective play.
“Then once he gets that right the natural talent and instinct will take over. But if you are not nailing the simple play how do you expect to nail the big play?
“If he keeps doing the simple things well it will build confidence and it will build trust with his teammates.”
