What is it with these young rugby league players wanting to go to the NFL lately?

Completely different sport, and training culture... Not transferable at all, imo.
Yeah I think it’s been shown that it’s a bridge too far. I have NFI, but as a casual observer, it seems that anyone who has not come through the college system seems to be almost written off from the start.

Absolutely.

In the NFL, every team has their own different playbook, and just because you line up in a certain position, it doesn't mean that you will block the guy right in front of you (if you are an offensive linesman), or Mark up against the player directly opposite you.

It's a complicated game, and people need to understand the complexities behind audibles, reading coverages, understanding playbooks, which gaps to shoot as a defender, etc.

Simply being athletically gifted is not enough.

Not saying it suits Aukafolau but I think NFL suits a type of “failed” rugby league player. Mailata being the prototypical “failure”.
That’s players who are essentially too big to make it as NRL players but suits them to being line players in NFL, especially tackles, where there skill in tackles gives them an advantage.

There's way more to just being big, though:

* knowing whether to block the A, B, or C gap;
* being able to recognise a blitz;
* blocking for a run VS blocking for a pass (different skills required)
* learning how to block without holding;
* learning the offensive play book, and all audibles

Being physically gifted is not enough, imo.

That stuff can be learned a lot easier than size/athleticism can be.
The real disadvantage these players have is the infrastructure is already there in US college system.
