Eels in the media

Can't wait to see how much they are offered for TV rights next time.
Union is going downhill fast in this country.

People are not going to care about them until they start winning again.
They won't start winning until they get some decent juniors into the system (and keep them).
They won't get those juniors until they start winning.

Vicious cycle.

I knew when RU Aus signed with Stan that they were going downhill fast..

No one is going to pay money to watch that shit sport..

They needed to take a bit and get on free to air TV build the interest in the game.

Now they are basically dead.. Suallii will stick around collect his 5 million than go do what SBW did follow the cash overseas..

I was actually awake around 6.30am with time to kill, and thought I'd flick around fre-to-air to try and find the Wallabies-Wales match... nada.

Union has disappeared (further) up its own arse, and RA's failure to even get past the group games will send it further back to the try hard elite niche sport that it is.

It's not Eels in the media, but continuing the Bureta Faraimo-inspired convo from before.

"In 2001, 13.76% of Rugby Australia expenditure (A$7.06 million) related to community rugby. By 2015, this had hit a record low of 2.65% ($2.37 million).
And while Rugby Australia spent $4.3 million (3.59%) on community rugby in 2019, this paled in comparison to how much the AFL spent on game development ($58.8 million, or 13.7% of its overall expenditure), as well as the NRL ($43.3 million, or 8.2% of its overall expenditure)."

It doesn't actually say how they got those numbers, apart from mentioning the data came from interviewing 60k people.

It doesn't mention the questions asked. What defines a 'supporter'? Someone who takes a passing interest? Someone who regularly pays money to see their club? Someone who was once given a team hat for free and so now says they follow that team despite never watching any games?

My mother-in-law for instance, if you were to ask her which team she follows she would say Manly. She grew up in the area. She never watches a game. Even if she is in the same house as me and I'm watching the footy, she might duck her head in occasionally and ask "who's winning" before leaving the room, but that's more her just trying to take an interest in what I'm doing. I'm guessing a lot of those Melbourne 'fans' are just like that. They couldn't even sell out their stadium for a home final against the Roosters a couple of weeks ago.

And what is the benefit of having hardcore fans anyway? Merkins who hate the club every time they lose and take their frustrations out on anyone seen to be supporting the club, including the sponsors.

Did anyone listen to the grand final edition of the 6 tackles with Gus podcast? I’d always wondered what made Lenriths defence so impenetrable and he talked about it today. He mentioned how Dylan Edwards is the key behind organising their defence and telling the forwards which way to go. He also talked about how their middles are super fit and don’t have to expend as much energy because they get their backs to do a lot of the grunt work. Finally he pointed out how they don’t make any errors or give away penalties and end up wearing the other teams down through weight of possession. I think their total amount of possession for the year if you added up all their games is a whopping 56%. It was really interesting to listen to.
