Eels in the media

Did anyone listen to the grand final edition of the 6 tackles with Gus podcast? I’d always wondered what made Lenriths defence so impenetrable and he talked about it today. He mentioned how Dylan Edwards is the key behind organising their defence and telling the forwards which way to go. He also talked about how their middles are super fit and don’t have to expend as much energy because they get their backs to do a lot of the grunt work. Finally he pointed out how they don’t make any errors or give away penalties and end up wearing the other teams down through weight of possession. I think their total amount of possession for the year if you added up all their games is a whopping 56%. It was really interesting to listen to.
There is nothing groundbreaking there. Gus has just stated what anyone can see.

Are you saying the players are like cattle (and mustering cattle) or we didn't have the cattle?
Don't have 'em. Or some teams have been able to field close to their top 17 frequently, however we haven't been close to that in 2023.

Someone said that the Eels had 22 weeks of suspensions and the next closest was single figures ? FMD.

Still, I'd be reluctant to move Gutho from fullback for someone with better attack. The game is still very much 50 per cent attack and 50 per cent defence. It's all very well to be able to score 30 points a game, but it isn't much use to you if your opponents are scoring 40.

If it was so obvious then every would copy the magic formula. They do what they do better than anyone else.
More derr that the “magic formula” has been pointed out for couple years.
And even that formula of aggressive defence is nothing new.
And to be that aggressive and not just completely lose advantage when you get the ball is down to fitness. Is being fitter the magic formula? Cause that ain’t new either.
People lost their shit a bit when Gould mentioned Smug success was down to having players meet certain principles. 100% those principles are just commitment to fitness.

I thought the Roosters deliberately gave away penalties rather than allowing quick play the balls to the point of forcing the referees to put away their whistles
I was more talking about their attack. Ferguson, Tupou and Tedesco averaged over 550m between them that year.

Have you been reading these forums? We have already broken all that down ad nauseam.

Their back 5 is the key. If they lose To'o for example it would gas JFH a lot more. Then if they lost Turuva too, then it would gas the other palooka too. Those two wingers in particular give oxygen to the rest of the team. Then Crichton, Tago and Edwards find momentum off that and then sometime JFH and Leota don't even have to carry the ball in a set of six.

Then on the return set of six everyone is amazed at the energy and aggression that the two palookas and pack for that matter are playing with. Hmmm...I wonder how and why?

It start with the wingers and goes from there. Then add the refereeing style of today, and how the chin is allowed to play in a dinner suit. Where the hell is the mystery?

I didn’t know fullbacks had such a significant impact on defence.

Yep...That's what they do. All the real good ones are yapping all the time and telling their players where to go and fill or move to gaps.

Slater was the master of this and many others have been great too. Gutho is a champion at this, it's just that no one listens to him.

Luke Burt was very good at that aspect of fullback play, the "yapping all the time and telling their players where to go and fill or move to gaps".

His successor Jarryd was shit at it (imo).

Actually, the wingers they put in can replicate it. Taruva has only been in the team this year but in previous years, the wingers could still ruck it out well. And they aren't big physically

Its about intent. Ppl like sivo dont have the intent except near the try lines
