Did anyone listen to the grand final edition of the 6 tackles with Gus podcast? I’d always wondered what made Lenriths defence so impenetrable and he talked about it today. He mentioned how Dylan Edwards is the key behind organising their defence and telling the forwards which way to go. He also talked about how their middles are super fit and don’t have to expend as much energy because they get their backs to do a lot of the grunt work. Finally he pointed out how they don’t make any errors or give away penalties and end up wearing the other teams down through weight of possession. I think their total amount of possession for the year if you added up all their games is a whopping 56%. It was really interesting to listen to.
That’s not a formula that is new or innovative, right ? Facts are that their continued success is because the salary cap has not bit them yet.

If they can continue to bring in cheapies from lower grades who grow into high calibre NRL players then there is no reason why it won’t continue. They are losing Critter and Leniu and if they can compensate, then all good.

IIRC their lower grades were not as dominant this year as previous? Unsure if that means anything, but we’ll only get to see that in 2025/26.

I could have said that 2 years ago tbh.

It's been quite noticeable for ages JFH and Leota especially do all there main stuff in defence.

To'o, Edwards and the other winger do the grunt work carting the ball out which conserves the big men energy to pounce when cleary pins the ball in the corner and Penrith can bash them there.

They also have that tackling technique where one picks the feet up and the other drives them back 4-5 metres. Hence gaining a dominant tackle and all the momentum.

It doesn't actually say how they got those numbers, apart from mentioning the data came from interviewing 60k people.

It doesn't mention the questions asked. What defines a 'supporter'? Someone who takes a passing interest? Someone who regularly pays money to see their club? Someone who was once given a team hat for free and so now says they follow that team despite never watching any games?

My mother-in-law for instance, if you were to ask her which team she follows she would say Manly. She grew up in the area. She never watches a game. Even if she is in the same house as me and I'm watching the footy, she might duck her head in occasionally and ask "who's winning" before leaving the room, but that's more her just trying to take an interest in what I'm doing. I'm guessing a lot of those Melbourne 'fans' are just like that. They couldn't even sell out their stadium for a home final against the Roosters a couple of weeks ago.

Very valid points.

I'd wager we would be heavily supported, though - seems there are Eels fans everywhere you go.

A very well-coached side, with very disciplined players.

Take note, Brad.

Wish he was still an Eel, tbh.

Though he was less effective at the end, at least he gave 100% - which is not something I suspect I can say for some of his more highly-paid counterparts.
The Roosters reggies game at CommBank recently he was binned twice for fighting. So there’s a reason why he has no contract. You’d think that an origin (did he play origin ?) player with maybe 200 NRL games could control his aggression and not be a liability to his team.

a massive part of fullbacks skill set is a big mouth and a shitload of finger pointing.

that's definitely not what our boy lacks.

Must be a roosters issue JWH still can't control his aggression.

The evidence this year suggests that we have ZERO idea how to defend when Gutho isn't on the field.

I think it was something like 6 tries in the 40 mins he was off the field in games he played.

Sharks, Titans and final game against Penrith. 2 tries each match conceded in the 10-15 mins he was off.

Thats not including the warriors match he didn't play how many tries did we let in that night what 8 or 9.
