The Parramatta Eels and Canterbury Bulldogs have been successful in expanding their fan base, thanks to Western Sydney’s significant population growth. According to a study by Roy Morgan Research, the Parramatta Eels are Sydney’s most supported NRL (National Rugby League) club, while the Bulldogs have experienced the fastest growth in their supporter base.
One of the main factors contributing to the rising popularity of both clubs is the rapid housing development in their traditional heartland. These regions, known for their larger supply of newly built properties, expanding infrastructure, and job opportunities, are attracting a considerable number of newly arrived migrants, which in turn is bolstering the fan base for the teams.
The Parramatta Eels, in particular, have seen a surge in support from the Indian community. The club reported that one in five of their supporters were born overseas, with those of Indian origin being among the fastest-growing demographic. Census data reveals that the Greater Parramatta region is one of the country’s most popular areas for Indian-born migrants.
The Eels experienced a 30% increase in their supporter base over the past year, adding approximately 140,000 fans. This growth rate was the second highest among all clubs, just behind the Canterbury Bulldogs, who saw a 33.6% increase.
Despite their success on the field, the Penrith Panthers’ recent achievements have not translated into as many new fans in comparison to other clubs located in faster-growing areas. However, the Panthers remain a popular team, with the research naming them as one of the top five most supported teams in Sydney.
In terms of nationwide support, the Melbourne Storm emerged as the most supported club in the country, boasting a reported 1.19 million fans. The Brisbane Broncos, despite being the losing grand finalists, came in second place with 1.15 million fans.
Overall, the support for NRL clubs has grown significantly, even in the face of recent upheavals including the pandemic. Fourteen out of sixteen continuing clubs have experienced an increase in support compared to 2022.
In addition to the established clubs, the Dolphins, a new team based in the northern Brisbane suburb of Redcliffe, has quickly gained popularity. Since their debut in the NRL six months ago, they have attracted the support of 232,000 Australians, making them the third most popular Queensland club.
