When the Roosters signed Robinson they made a point of saying he wasn’t responsible for any of that strategic stuff. It was the reason for the distributed structure they had, so that the coach could leave or be sacked without having to blow up the whole footy program and start from scratch. It’s pretty obvious that’s the standard operating model in the NRL these days, and certainly at our club.
I’d say before 2019 our head coach had a lot more say in strategy, including recruitment and retention. After that he was just part of the committee. Think about it. The team’s stars would be on more than the coach, and certainly more influential within the organisation. There’s a lot of conflict of interest around the coach deciding which of these guys deserve ~10% of the salary cap. They are among the top earners in the organisation.
