When the Roosters signed Robinson they made a point of saying he wasn’t responsible for any of that strategic stuff. It was the reason for the distributed structure they had, so that the coach could leave or be sacked without having to blow up the whole footy program and start from scratch. It’s pretty obvious that’s the standard operating model in the NRL these days, and certainly at our club.

I’d say before 2019 our head coach had a lot more say in strategy, including recruitment and retention. After that he was just part of the committee. Think about it. The team’s stars would be on more than the coach, and certainly more influential within the organisation. There’s a lot of conflict of interest around the coach deciding which of these guys deserve ~10% of the salary cap. They are among the top earners in the organisation.

My issue with Ryles is he’s never been involved in the coaching setup with a team that has struggled. He’s been with arguably the 2 most successful clubs (aside from Penrith) in his post playing career, when has he had turn around a form slump, or rebuild a team that’s missed the finals?
Your issue is baseless. It means nothing. Did Bellamy, Bennett or Robinson go through it? They all have to start somewhere.

Dean Pay, Matt Elliott, Paul Langmack went through it? Did it make them better coaches?

It’s a gamble no matter who is appointed. Even if we jagged Bennett he’d be on a 15 year premiership drought.

Robinson coached in the ESL

Bennett is about 100 years old

Bellamy coached at the Raiders and also as an understudy to the 100 year old. Wasn't he the coach of the baby broncos that beat us? Ffs

You are right though we could get a coach who has years experience and is a dud at our club.

Haha it’s not baseless at all. You’re asking a coach who has only seen success and great environments to go into a club that’s very likely going to be wooden spoon

Bellamy was a lower grade coach with Canberra and had his ups and downs

Robinson coached Newcastle second grade through struggling periods

Bellamy coached at Ipswich to mixed success.

whilst I agree anyone is a gamble, to say past experiences and environments is irrelevant is just plain silly.
