the move of Hayne is growing on me, especially with Feleti at lock who can ease the load and expectation on Hayne. This will allow him to get more involved but not play the traditional 5/8 role, which is virtually non-existent in todays game.

i am still not sold on the move to 5/8 but i was wasn't convinced when inglis moved there for the storm before winning a title. i am willing to give it a shot.

re: hayne going to the media - geez maybe he didn't handle it the best but i am pretty sure that they approached him, asked the question (probably after reading the thoughts of many on this forum) and he answered honestly. sure a better way would've been to answer "that's up to the coach" but i think the side looked a lot better with hayne at fb than when burt was there in 08.

I think Jarryd could do a job at 5/8 especially with a guy like Mateo in the side. What reallly worries me Finch will be our main kicker.......

again you have no idea, he never was given a fair crack at the centre position.
Half a season of bollocking it up is a fair enough crack for mine...

Anyway, I hope he makes a go of it at five-eighth. I think Stagger's right in that the aim is to get Hayne involved in the play - especially when he was at wing, or centre, or also fullback in the last few years, he just didn't actively involve himself in the play as much as a guy of his talent and paycheck should.

God knows the kid has the talent, but just hasn't shown the consistent attitude to go with it yet. Still, I forget he's only 20 yo... The quotes coming from Hayne since his time with Fiji in the world cup have all signalled a turn around and new maturity, so here's hoping.

1. Burt/Inu
2. Reddy/Burt
3. Inu/Reddy
4. B Smith
5. Grothe
6. Hayne
7. Finch

Not a bad first choice backline :D

in fairness to hayne, burt and any of our backs, they were in a side that was instructed by the coach to play "boring predictable football". apart from mateo there was very little creativity anywhere else in the side as they played a dud brand of league.

given the flair our players are capable of, hopefully daniel anderson will coach them to use it.

Does that mean only Mateo was instructed to play with any flair, while the rest were told not to? Or just that Mateo had the nads/confidence to do it, while guys like Hayne and Inu had a bludge and cashed their cheques.

I think we sometimes heap too much blame on Hagan, especially now he's gone. These professional talents players need to be like Mateo and take on some more responsibility themsevles, without needing to be spoon fed.

not sure. in any case, most of the rare occasions we looked dangerous were off the back of a mateo pass or freakish offload to put others into space. i started pointing the finger at hagan when he made his outlandish comment (and moreso when finch echoed it) that you had to play boring, predictable football to complete sets and win games while 6 of the top 8 were entertaining sides and we were struggling. i also wasn't happy that one of the comp's best structured defensive clubs over the best part of a decade before he arrived was starting to leak points regularly.

Yeah, Hagan clearly had run out of ideas and answers, and I've no doubt that the players couldn't develop themselves any further with his "coaching". Morale went further down than it was before Brian walked, and it's no wonder we started to leak and the players disagree with each other on the field.

But I'm a lot more confident that DA will bring something new to the plate, in terms of fresh ideas and styles based on his St Helens experiences, and that the players will respond much better. This Hayne move is just part one, though I wish some of them had pulled their fingers out a bit more last year, I can't see anything was stopping them.

This will be interesting. He'll have pigs running at him all day and then be expected to live up to his glamour boy wage and actually create some plays. Nowhere to hide Jarryd. Sink or swim. Excellent.

It must make you guys bitter reading articles like that on Hayne haha

What an inspiration!! and he's still only 20, amazing, how old is Burt again? hahaha
i'm not going to get into a slanging match - cos Hayne is a top class player - i'm not going to put him down to point out wRong's stuff ups  .... I just think it'd be good if you were as much a man as Jarryd to put your hand up and take responsibility

that's true Strider, this article has given me alot of positive hope about Jarryd and full credit to him for sticking his hand up and admitting his faults, that Fiji experiance will turn out to be a valuble experiance for him and the club.

I wouldn't worry about WronG! he can continue to attack Burt and Caylo all he want, i won't get baited with that crap anymore.

This new mature Jarryd will be with us all year... the same old Hayne-posters-on-the-ceiling Ron will be in Europe from July ;-)

there's a bit of theory going around Jake is that he could be used at hooker with his brother...

not sure whether I like the idea but it is coming from DA so I guess we have to keep an open mind to how it goes.

Fair enough.

We all know that Finch is not the greatest, Why would we load Finch up with an experimental 5/8? I hope it works but I have major doubts.

well we still have Feleti on the other side of the ruck to help with playmaking side of it, in saying that if you'd notice Jarryds games for Fiji he was predminantly playing a second recievers role and I thought he show some potential there despite the fact that he was sort of playing against average first graders.

Agreed,

Not sure about Hayne at 5/8 but good on the coach for giving it a go. I think Hayne is more useful being put into gaps or broken play rather than the one creating these plays for others.
Also the 5/8 needs a good kicking game too and I haven't seen Hayne putting boot to ball too often.

I hope he becomes an instant sensation at number 6 and it is good to see coach Anderson is already willing to try new things. I do have my reservations about this one though.
