Eels - Toyota Cup

Outclassed by a very good side leading the competition. Not much defence on display by either side however.

Number 8 for Penrith was great, and shaded the effort from Mannah in my opinion.

Daniel Mortimer went off late unable to walk, and was on a crutch at the post match function - expecting he'll be out for a while.

The fullback Mase also went off during the game after a head/face injury trying to stop a breakaway run front on, at that point Tony Williams shifted from the forwards to the backs, and Gardner moved to fullback. Was glad they are giving Tony a run in the forwards again - a pre-requisite before anyone thinks of him as a first grade back row prospect.

This was a team that was massively understrength.Whats going on.We need to defend better than that. Why cant Tony W play with the same intensity that he does in FG.

.

Our number 8 was Sam McKendry. Has played a couple of First Grade games this year and has used that experience and gone back to the 20's looking alot sharper. Only 18, has a big future ahead of him.

He was great Daz. Involved in lots of the stuff in attack with good skills to boot.

It's a good youth side you've got there, especially if you can include guys that have stepped up into firsts like today's hooker and five-eighth (assuming they're both pretty young).

Mate the 5/8 is 17, the fullback just turned 18.Coote reminds me of a young Lockyer.

Iosefa,Graham,Coote,Grant and Paulo will all hopefully go back to the 20's for the final series.

We could have another gun player called Greg Waddell back from injury for the finals also!

Just a shame it's so hard for districts like Penrith and Parra can't hang on to all these talented juniors these days, and miss out on seeing them all rise through the ranks together into first grade.

Yep. Its against the rules of the game to hold on to your juniors...Bloody pathetic.

Penrith is trying to get rid of alot of experienced players to hold on to the real good ones.

Between the two clubs there have been in my memory two great era's of a host of local juniors coming through into first grade.

Parra - Early to Mid 80's

Panthers - Late 80's to early 1990's

It makes extra sweet for fans when you can cheer guys through the junior grades into first grade and then compete for the cash at the end of the year with those same core of blokes.

Whats doing.Mase has been our best for the last 3 weeks at full back.Marty is a deadset forward.

With Justin Hunt going to the Tigers, Hodkinson and Mortimer injured and Keating moving to halfback the NYC side are a bit short on in terms of halves at the moment. Might be a good time to see Albert Kelly moved up but it could be that Mortimers injury may only be short term.

Can't believe they didn't select Kelly. Or is it they don't want other clubs getting a good look at him.

Could be that. I would guess that maybe Mortimer is only short term or someone mentioned that Hodko could be back soon as well. Instead of bringing him in for one or two games it may be better to let him worry about schoolboy footy for the moment.

Kelly isn't available this weekend due to the Australian Schoolboy Championships beginning in Darwin on Sunday.

An interesting thing happened after the Toyota Cup game last night.

While the bunnies went over to the Burrow to thank their fans, Eels Coach Matt Cameron came down from the coaches box, strode out onto the Pitch. Got his players in a Huddle on the half way line, and it appears, READ THEM THE RIOT ACT. I have not seen any thing like it at Parramatta, ever. It was interesting to watch Defencive Coach Joey Grima and Matt Cameron's Body language, during and after that Huddle.
