Wonder if the Tonga tour made money ?
Nope it didn’t

probably lost around 250k pounds

the Tongans were probably offered a profit share as an incentive to tour and obviously when that didn’t materialise the Samoans found out and didn’t want a bar of a tour

Wouldn’t blame PNG for taking up the offer, they won the bowl but most likely won’t be offered a spot in the top tier now Samoa is staying.
Yeap and considering Fiji is meant to be the Bowl hosts next year, it would be better for their development to play England than just playing the Bati & Cook Islands again.

Meh, this is a bed entirely of England's own making.

For decades they've refused to listen to any valuable criticism or anybody that's been warning them that their whole philosophy of how to grow the sport is totally arse backwards, and have consistently allowed infighting and deadweight to subvert any attempts at significant change.

There's no helping them, and they wouldn't accept it even if it was offered, so they'll have to lay in this bed and hopefully figure their problems out on their own before they fall away into total obscurity.

I imagine that there's very little chance of that happening considering the politics involved ATM.

Lebanon could be a fair shout if the RFL get it organised quick and market it well with a decent lead up time. It's not going to break any attendance or ratings records, but The Cedars wouldn't be any worse than the Tongan team that just toured if they field their best team, and the Lebanese community is fiercely proud. I'd imagine that the Lebanese diaspora in the UK is significantly bigger than the Tongan one as well.

There's potential to draw a relatively decent crowd or two if the RFL keep there expectations within reason and engage with the Lebanese community in London well.

Probably not but Fiji are meant to host the Bowl next year so that could work in PNG’s favour if they request to go to England instead. I’d be a little disappointed if I was them, they won the Bowl this year but seemingly have no opportunity at promotion to the top tier and bigger games because the flavour of the month teams have to be there. It’s the same bias that saw Tonga get the 2019 Oceania Cup top tier spot despite Fiji accomplishing the same at the 2017 World Cup (semis & beating NZ), just without the fanfare.

Alternatively Lebanon is a good option for a stronger opponent. England could look to get a “Northern Hemisphere” Championships started for that matter.

1 - England, France, Lebanon, Ireland/Wales

And maybe.

2 - Wales/Ireland, Scotland, Italy/Serbia, Jamaica

So your source for RFL losing 1/2mill $’s is some randoms Twitter question and opinion lol. Righto

they sold 40k tickets, at an aVg $60 a ticket that’s $2.4mill before corporate sales and any other income that came out of it.
it might have lost money but neither you nor I or some random on Twitter know Lol.

People on trl talked about needing crowds of 50k to break even

why do you think samoa said no ? Obviously the rfl cut how much they offered them vs Tonga since it lost money

Reaching, maybe nrl just wanted them to be in championship and convinced them to stay put? Like I said you or randoms on the internet don’t know and are purely guessing. If and when we see a statement from RFL we will know.

I don't necessarily disagree with any this, but if we're being honest the Government's Pacific outreach program is the main reason the Oceania Cup and Bowl are happening at all.

PNG's involvement would be crucial from the political point of view of the government, and they'd definitely put pressure on both NRL and PNGRL for them to stay and participate over touring England. It wouldn't surprise me if that influence was a contributing factor on Samoa's decision not to tour England as well, especially considering the shenanigans going on in Samoa ATM.

The RFL won't organise a competition like that for the same reason the NRL has traditionally been reluctant to invest heavily in internationals until recently; only the matches involving England, and maybe France if they're played in France, would have any hope of turning a significant profit, and the tournament as a whole would make a significant loss.

I would like to see RFL-IRL use this as a opportunity to play a British Isles 4 Nations

England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales

France will be in the RLWC Qualifiers

TRL is the most embarrassingly out of touch echo chamber in RL circles, if anything the opinions of the people there are more worthless than the average punter's considering all the dogmatic BS they're constantly soaking in.
Odds are that they're all falling over themselves to blame an NRL conspiracy for Samoa refusing to tour, that along with an NRL agent being the man on the grassy knoll...

You've got no more idea as to exactly why Samoa turned England down than anybody else either, nor do any of us have any details on either of the revenue sharing deals that England offered them.
