Expansion prospects in the the future NRL vs afl

here's an idea, build it somewhere you can expand it when you need to. Future planning, controversial I know but!
When you biuld a stadium, or any building, you usually do so to meet the current needs that exists, not what might happen in 60 years time.

The truth of the matter is that Suncorp is the best located sporting venue in Australia. It is a 2 second walk from Brisbane's public transport hub - Roma St Station, and right next to a major road with ample bus links. That is part of the magic of the place, and why it works.

They built the biggest stadium they could on it.

They also used real estate owned by the League - so it was also the cheapest option.

Where else in Brisbane can you buy, what, 10 acres of land to build a 70k seater that is so close to the centre of the city and also the public transport links?

Sydney was just lucky they had a big farm sitting there from the days that Homebush Abattoir handled all the state's beef and lamb slaughtering, with rail infrastructure that came with it, and that it was suddenly in the centre of the demographic area. Even then, the Govt spent a massive amount converting the old rail siding to a passenger station, something no sport could afford (or the AFL/VFL would have done it with Waverly).

It's ok to sit there in your fantasy world and demand things, but in the real world things are different.

.

sometimes you make sense, other times your apologist attitude for everything NRL just gets in the way.

Suncorp is well located, best located, yeah maybe not. both major stadiums in Melbourne would argue with that from pretty decent positions. Etihad is literally beside Melbourne's major rail station, commuter and intercity, and has very easy access to the city centre. The MCG is in very easy walking distance of 3 train stations, 2 of which are huge (Flinders St, and Richmond, the other is Jolimont). it's also a pleasant parkland stroll to the city. both are also served by trams and buses.

granted it is way better than any stadium in Perth for access, and the Gabba across town. AAMI in adelaide should be bombed with the largest available weapon, the Adelaide oval is not too bad. The SFS and SCG, mmmm not so good, ANZ, not too bad really, it's a bit of a hike but the transport links are ok.

haven't been to DFS, or EA. but DFS looks as far away from Townsville as possible and still be in Townsville but in all honesty it probably doesn't matter. EA, no idea.

tone it down a tad.

Subiaco is two minutes from Subiaco staion which is 5mins from the city and in the middle of bars and restaurants. You can't get much better than that!

In the real world people with vision build things that are future proofed as much as possible so you don't end up in less than 10years time with something that is no longer fit for purpose. As Australias 3rd city Brisbane should have a stadium with a capacity to host major events with no loss in $'s due to capacity limits, it hasn;t and due to Suncorps limitations probably won't for many decades to come.

and in the middle of a residential area with extremely limited parking, the train station is tiny and can in no way handle even the current crowds let alone 60 - 70000 if they redevelop it.

having a go at Suncorp is a bit rich, Brisbane has 2 TWO modern stadiums, Perth has none and won't have one for the forseeable future.

and any crit of Brisvegas applies triple to Perth. you don't even have capacity for now never mind the future.

lang park is a shiyt place for public transport. the other option at the time was to build a stadium at the showgrounds or they could have built it where roma street parklands are. The show ground has its own train station. Lang Park was to small when they built it, they went the popular decision instead of the correct one

you'll get no argument from me that Perth needs two new stadiums! If the stupid people of WA hadn't kicked out the last Govt we would probably be getting them by now.

Disagree about Subi, I've had no problems ever getting to and from on train and there is capacity around it to extend it (which is going to happen) or build a new one next door, which isn't probably going to happen. As a club ground Suncorp is the best in the country, as a big event ground it is too small and Brisbane will miss out because of it. Not that I'm complaining, as Perth continues to grow and we eventually get a 65,000+ stadium the big sports games will end up here instead of Brisbane so I'm happy :)

Where in Brisbane would you have put this stadium? Which alternative location would have had the transport infrastructure to support it?

They built the Brisbane Ent Cent out at Boondall and it is a bitch to get to and from. Location is important to get the crowds in.

What are you on?

Demoloshing the showgrounds would have meant the death of 1 of Brisbanes oldest public institutions : the Ekka. Not to mention the fact that the railway line runs through the middle of the lot so any stadium built on that land would have ended up no bigger than the current Suncorp.

The Roma St Parklands?! That site is half as big as the Lang Park area and is on the side of a hill. No engineer in their right mide would try and build a stadium there.

Haha - hardly a convincing bid. Must be a local election on.

No mention either of the WAFC who would be the ultimate decision makers. And they still have big problems with good old Freo.

As the good mayor himself said, the northern suburbs of Perth is full of expats - primarily from the east of Australia, the UK, New Zealand and South Africa. It is a perfect place for a ..... Rugby League team!!

I'm sure Joondalup Giant will agree!

He is talking long term and with Perth's Northern suburbs tipped to continue to boom with over 200,000 new homes he sees Joondalup as being a satellit city centre for Perth. No harm chucking your hat in the ring!

Seanoff, don't get lost in semantics. Suncorp is in an ace position to a major rail hub, better than the MC or SCG's.

The point is that PR's willy nilly baseless whinges at the NRL are precicely that - baseless. That's why he ignored Jokers question - where else would you have put it?

It was certainly well located when i went to boarding school in Brisbane, walk up to Waterworks Rd from school and catch a bus. It's probably in the best spot it can be in Brisbane.

you'll note i had a deep crack at Perth. PR needs to worry about his own backyard. Brisbane is well served. Perth not so much

A few of you a having a crack at Freo, but you must remeber they are very finacial and are a fantastic club off the field, they just struggle to win games, I wish there was a few more NRL clubs that could be the same.

Expansion as i see feasible atm.

Nrl

Sydney x8
Melbourne x1
Brisbane x2
Gold Coast x1
Wollongong x1
Central Coast x1
Townsville X1
Canberra x1
NZ x2
Newcastle x1
Queensland other x1
Papua New Guinea x1
Perth x1

AFL

Perth x3
Melbourne x10
Brisbane x2
Sydney x2
Gold Coast x1
Adelaide x2
Northern Territory x1
Tasmania x1
Canberra x1

A-League

Sydney x3
Melbourne x3
Central Coast x1
Newcastle x1
Brisbane x1
Gold Coast x1
North Queensland x1
Adelaide x1
Perth x2
Wellington x1
Canberra x1
Christchurch/Auckland x1
Tasmania x1
Northern Territory x1
Wollongong x1

So for me league has 22 possible places where if done right a club would have a good chance of survival and out of all codes it has the most unique case of which it could have 3 countries represented( Afl x1 and A-league x2).

10 year prediction- 1 new team from Queensland

AFL imo could at most expand to 23 teams but unlike league these options have a high amount of doubt, Western Sydney, Canberra and Gold Coast could easily be failures just like league trying for Perth/Northern territory or A-league a Brisbane 2.

10 year prediction- 2 new teams from Western Sydney & Gold Coast

The A-League being so young has the most opportunity for growth jumping from 10 to 20 teams over the next 10-20 would not be out of the question. Unlike the other two codes tho the game has to worry about keeping afloat aswell as expanding

10 year prediction- 5 new teams 2nd Sydney, 2nd Melbourne, Canberra, Tasmania and Wollongong.
