Expansion Through the Second Tier

Its def looking like the NRL is bribing the teams to all run their own reserve grade sides. I wonder what the ARLC then has planned for the QRL and NSW cup, if anything?

The last thing the competition can afford is to have the Pride and Cutters end up like the Capras.

It'll be entering to see how the Clydesdales go in their return after many years away. Pity they're not called Toowoomba any more.

Does the NFL have reserve grade?
NFL is not the NRL

NFL have squads of 54 for a 11 man game

As they have a defensive team and a attacking team, and special play teams training sessions can look like a proper game

To do the same in the NRL, we will ignore the special play team, you wont be a able to release half the squad to play NSW Cup/Qld Cup training sessions. As RL plays both attack and defense. In fact you need to increase the squad size from 30+6 to 40 and pay everyone professional wages. Just like the CBA proposes

As both attack & defense squad play on game day in NFL

So the only logical equivalent in the NRL is to play NRL Reserve Grade on game days. So all players can play on game day just like do in the NFL in full professional games at full professional venues

Try eight...
And who really benefits from that, Bathurst or Penrith?

It would be undeniably better for the sport not only in towns like Bathurst, but as a whole, if it was possible for them to develop clubs and professional pathways locally that result in local teams competing in meaningful competitions.

But seemingly nobody at the NRL, ARLC, or in the establishment in Sydney in general, cares about what is best for the sport as a whole, only what is best for the NRL and it’s clubs in the short term.

For Penrith to sit there and pretend they’re doing Bathurst a favour, when the reality is that you’re giving them the equivalent of tokens and trinkets while fleecing them of all their talent and resources, and limiting the sport’s potential growth locally, is pretty disgusting honestly.

not quite only around 30-33 nfl players out of 54 play on game day, the rest sit on benches looking pretty and waving towels.

but beside the point, nrl will go to around a 40 man squad on a combination of full and development contracts when the full national reserve grade gets announced in next year or two is my guess. They’ll also be allowed to pull players out of the second tier cups if needed to pad reserve grade out due to injuries.

would be interesting to see how participation might increase in bathurst if the $300k the council gives the panthers every year was spent on the local RL grassroots clubs and schools instead?

Agree but priority will be most likely given to their U21 squads as part of their development. Unless there are bigger injury concerns

Ah true, forgot about u21’s

so we’d have:
nrl
nrl reserve grade

U21’s
U18’s
U16’s

NRLW
womens feeder comps independent of nrl clubs?

state comps in some guise

would u21’s etc be national comps or remain state based but with addition of nrl club run sides?

Its the challenge

In NSW its naturally aligned with NRL for 12 of the 16 clubs and its a full season too. includong the Warriors.

Its more of a stadium & scheduling issue

Bears & Newtown dont play U21s but Storm are now playing U21s in 2023

So even U21s will only be missing Cowboys, Broncos & Titans. But all 3 used to run RG or U21

At U19 & U17 level it makes sense to stay in a state based structure. Though the missing NSW Country regions should join

Cheers, so we may end up with a national nrl, reserve grade, u21’s and nrlw

thenu18’s and 16’s nrl club sides in state comps still plus a state league independent of nrl clubs.

Won’t be cheap flying 4 grades around the country plus nz in national comps.

That's interesting to see the Storm have U21's and U19's in the NSWRL system now, that is going to be amazing for bringing the local Victorian boys through a quality system against quality opposition. The game has really turned a corner with development of Victorian talent.

NRL clubs get a lot of money these day $25 to $38 mil
Yes the upping of the grant has meant that clubs can now afford to run reserve grade and elite jnr teams without assistance of second tier/ pokie clubs. All clubs will be running their own reserve grade sides and u18’s Soon.
