Should've named the thread - Explain - Manchester geography...

Some people need to know what actually IS Manchester before commenting on how much rugby league they think is played there! Clearly, Salford being outside of Manchester is correct and fair, but Trafford being outside of Manchester is pedantic because it means they can't use the figures at Old Trafford to show that RL in Manchester is huge!

So how come when we all argue about how well RL is doing in London nobody quotes the Challenge Cup final?

The attendance at one of the biggest games of the season between two clubs (none of which are from or usually from that area) in a final of a competition is no indication of the strength of the game in that area.

Union would love to have had a crowd of 90,000 in London.

Shame about that.

Just read this after my previous post.

Totally agree, and good use of the technicality on Trafford ;)

You cannot use the a crowd at a final as some kind of determinant for how strong the game is. Very few of the people in those crowds will have been from Manchester. Nobody says NFL is doing well over here because of one game at Wembley. It's an incredibly weak argument for anyone to use this crowd (especially since Trafford is not in Manchester).

No of course you can't use rugby league crowds in Manchester as a guide to the importance of rugby league in Manchester.

Who woulda thought?

:lol::lol::lol:

Perhaps it is because union has next to none. Ohhh...

Only the most deluded would suggest that rugby league has much presence in Manchester.

Have fun quibbling with the record books...:lol:

"Those crowds don't count....because they show RL in a positive light...."

Strong argument in this thread.

Keep going...

So far we have established union has never had any sort of presence in Manchester and rugby league has had over a hundred years of big crowds and support there.

It's not pedantic at all. It is fact. Saying Trafford is in Manchester is like saying Salford is, or Stockport is, or Oldham. They are in Greater Manchester, but not in the City of Manchester.

Below is a map of the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester. Notice that Trafford is NOT in Manchester.

Thats a good detailed map showing all the districts in Gtr Manchester. There are many numourous suburbs within those boroughs as well. The region above will one day beknown as simply 'Manchester". The city is in the heart of the county with all the satellite towns and suburbs around the city, similar to most large cities on earth. So nothing really new.

How on Earth can Trafford be Manchester but not Salford or Sale?

Either way only a delusional person in the extreme can use one-off crowds at Old Trafford attracting people from all over the country to claim RL is popular in Manchester. The whole thread was why isn't there a SL club in Manchester and crowds at a final held near Manchester have ZERO relevance to this whatsoever.

RL is bigger in Greater Manchester but in Manchester the city both sports have very small presence but RU's small presence is bigger than RL's very small presence. If you're talking the area near Manchester then only the most delusional and ignorant of people could ever claim Salford as bigger than Sale today (What happened years ago is irrelevent to what sport's bigger today)

Manchester is dominated by football though by their one Premier League club Manchester City though nearby outside of Manchester is Manchester United

I see.

Shame poor old union has no presence in Manchester.

Nice ramble too... lol

If you like I can start listing crowds for each sport in the city and we will quickly see which sport has significance there.

Have you been?

There are loads of people in Manchester right now who are from the surrounding areas.

Which club would you like to see in Manc? We could have the Manchester Crusaders, or the Manchester Dragons. Other than that using the idea that Salford doesn't represent a presence in Manchester there is not a lot else out there.

Trafford has always been part of Manchester, its a separate borough but that is only used by people wanting to make a cheap point about United. Salford, Sale, Stockport etc. where seperate towns and cities that have been slowly swallowed up by a growing Manchester and is why people there want to keep there own identity.

Trafford was mainly a giant indutrial estate and a shopping centre. That map while looking nice and pretty is completely irrelevant. Ask someone from Alty or Bowden if they are in Trafford, i bet they say no.

Okay list crowds for the rugby league clubs in Manchester. I'll give you the names of all the rugby league clubs in Manchester and you supply the crowds:

Mancunians
....

oh and that's it unless you want to include university sides?

Rugby league has more presence in Coventry than it does in the City of Manchester. Rugby union has a small presence in Manchester too but more than the one club RL has.

If you make up rubbish about how big RL is then you give up all right to claim about rubbish other sports make up (e.g. RU's claimed billions watching the world cup)

What a strange concept. I haven't been to Tokyo, but I can safely say it's not part of Manchester. Trafford is not part of the City of Manchester (and it includes Sale), but like Salford, Sale and Stockport it is very close and like them and Wigan it is part of Greater Manchester (which desn't really exist anymore).

Soccer has Manchester and Liverpool, rugby league has the towns between them but most certainly very tiny presence in Manchester and Liverpool. Salford's the nearest club but they only get 4000 fans which is easily the poorest for a heartland SL club and a fair bit lower than Sale's (who are also near Manchester but not in it)

There are plenty of RL fans and northern expats down here too, but doesn't make local RL bigger.

Only a troll would disagree. Congrats you qualify... lol

Waiting for that massive list of union crowds.

Slightly less unpopular in fact. Rugby league has only one club in Manchester and they're amateur. RU has a few more amateur clubs than that. There's no more to it that is the fact. Both are insignificant next to soccer, but RL was non-existant outside of unis a couple of years ago.
