I didn`t see the interview with Gould and Gallop, and I didn`t see the way Gould carried on.
it was hardly an interview mate gould kept interrupting gallop and talking over the top of him all he was focused on was 'what happens to melbourne this year?' and 'why can't they play for points?' he was acting like a spoilt two year old it was bloody pathetic especially given the office of the man he was so disrespectful towards

I saw it. Pretty poor effort from Gus. Unfortunately hes been struck by the "Im a dickhead Channel 9 employee" syndrome.

Look at Voss, Vautin, Rabbits. eck, even Sterlo got caught at one stage (remember the Telestrator, Now, if we freeze play here....).

Anyways, he was very disrespectful. :x

I didn`t see the interview with Gould and Gallop, and I didn`t see the way Gould carried on. All I`m saying is that he`s dead right about the salary cap. I`m not defending Melbourne either. I`m just saying that, as it stands at the moment, the salary cap is very flawed. Do people really like their clubs cultivating good quality teams over the course of a few years and then having to dismantle them and start all over again with players that they buy from other clubs? I don`t. It`s destroyed the whole essence of rugby league: loyalty, tribalism, representing a community. As Parra Pete says, it`s becoming almost like a series of exhibition games played by mercenaries. There need to be incentives for a club to keep a team together. That`s all Gould was saying in that article. I don`t care if it was Ronald McDonald or Donald Duck saying it; I agree with everything he said.

If the clubs were to always retain local new talent and the salary cap didnt even the teams, not everyone has a shot at the title. Eels, Broncos, Dragons, Storm (to name a few) will dominate while teams like Raiders, sharks, roosters, who often buy from other clubs wont have a chance.

maybe the cap does need to be looked at that still gives the storm no excuse to cheat it

If Melbourne were only interested in keeping that wonderful talent and team that they helped forge (brings a tear to my eye...) they would not have bought Finch, and then attempted to buy Willie Mason.

It wasn't a case of Melbourne fudging the numbers to keep the players they had, they wanted everyone on the open market they could sneak in.

It's no coincidence they appeared in so many grand finals in a row, and let's be honest, that was pretty boring.

That's the point! They should not be able to buy Finch, Mason, Newton etc. However they should be able to keep Inglis, Slater, Cronk, Smith, Johnson etc

ok fine then we can keep gulavou kingston and cordoba, the dragons can keep poore and stanley, the broncos can keep kemp and taylor etc etc etc

in every post lately you seem to be making one rule for the storm and another for everyone else its getting annoying

So, if every team who develops juniors gwts to keep them, like the Storm, what about the clubs who cant?

Raising the cap won't alter player movements, it will merely up the cash that players offered to stay or go. Clubs will be able to pay players more but they will still have to fit them within a cap and just like now they won't be able to compete with the cash other clubs can throw at them.

That aside, the only way the cap can increase is to raise the grant the NRL gives to each club every year which is currently at $3.45 million.

Clubs are already losing money and can't afford to pay any more out of their own pockets. If the cap is scrapped or raised now, clubs will go broke. And until the new TV deal is done, the NRL can't afford to increase the grant.

So Gould can go on all he wants about the cap and player wages but unless he has a viable solution he is just wasting space.

You`re probably right. I`m not necessarily talking about raising the cap. I`m more interested in the idea of being able to keep players by offering a sliding scale of exemptions under the cap, so that a player who has been at a club for three years has part of their salary exempt from inclusion under the cap; five years, a bit more, six years, etc, etc. Would that be workable? And would it still maintain equity for all clubs?

No because some clubs, such as the Roosters, have only limited development areas from which to draw young players whereas Penrith has half of Sydney.

If there were big exemptions for local players then Penrith would never have to let players go and a club like the Roosters would never be able to buy them.

but if the exemption was for junior players brought through the system, not necessarily local juniors then it would be an even playing field. The clubs would just need to be smarter with recruitment of juniors and pay the money to bring them through the grades. If you look at our junior rep sides you will probably find that half of then aren't from the parra area

best comment i've heard through this whole storm saga was from paul kent last night on backpage.....

it doesn't matter if the salary cap was $1 or $10 million......the melbourne storm cheated the cap to get an advantage over other teams, they were going to do it regardless. the salary cap is not the issue.
