Few Changes that Might Help

True Eel,
I like your ideas. I think it could work.

One change I would make is put hindy in the Front Row and make him rotate like a front rower. Against Manly that is what he did and he was great.

Otherwise I like your team.
The old saying of "You're are only as strong as your weakest link" applies to us, and esi Tonga sure is a weak link.

So you think he should play inside or outside center?

to be honest, I wish teams did still play like that, but since they don't, no, i think he should play left centre as i said quite clearly in the first post and several times since then

So Ben Roberts is of the calibre of Kenny, Daley or Fitler?

umm, no. it was obvious to everyone who can read and comprehend English that was clearly NOT what I said and in fact the opposite of what i said, so thanks for playing your game, but FAIL.

I aree with you. He`s the best five-eight we`ve had for a few years now, but still not quite what we need, I don`t think. In terms of being a 'link' man or 'play-maker', he`s a bit of a one trick pony I reckon: run wide and throw a cut-out pass to the winger. That`s okay, but his real strengths - as you pointed out - are his running game and his tackling. Good long kicking game, too. Now, where do you put a player like that? I think centre would make it difficult for him because he would have to do a lot of defence and would not get the ball anywher near as often as he does now. Lock? Maybe. Fullback? Maybe - but we`ve got Jarryd (and please don`t anyone tell me that Hayne is a five-eight; please).
So I think the only two positions for Roberts at Parramatta are five-eight or lock. But if we put him at lock and leave Hayne at fullback, who do we have at five-eight? Answer: nobody.
I guess what I`m trying to say is that, while in essence I agree with your sentiments, I personally think it`s best if we leave Roberts at 6 for the present. (And I don`t think Maitua is a viable option for six, either.)

appreciate the comments. i agree that Lock may be another option for Roberts - if he were to be shuffled around from 5/8. i only suggested centre as the main option as we have such a weakness there at left centre currently AND because i think Reni Maitua is going great at Lock AND because we need more size in the forwards overall and by playing both Roberts and Maitua in the backrow (because you're not going to drop Maitua obviously) only makes our pack that much smaller overall....

i like your thought process though for analysing the options and do understand what you're saying. i just personally believe that moving Hayne to 6 would improve our team (no surprises there), but i know this is a long shot to happen anyway.....unless perhaps he does kill it at 5/8 for City on the weekend, which even though I'm a Country boy, I'm hoping he does ;-)

I agree with Burt coming back but at the expense of who?
Hayne needs to stay where he is I think, we won more games last year with him at fullback than we did at five eighth and in recent weeks is looking devastating whilst unfit due to the playmakers.
Roberts to centre....no. I wouldn't want to waste him there, but it's nonetheless a decent suggestion considering how weak we are in the centers. Would he do well though? I don't think so.

If anything, we need a defensively strong centre to come in, which is why missing Smith and Loko is so hurtful for us. I think we need Horo in our back row, but if Matt Ryan continues on from his debut then maybe Horo will return there? I think he did relatively well there last season given the circumstances.
Whilst Burty is my favourite Eel I don't see any justification to drop Blair or Sio.

Burt comes back in under my suggestion at the expense of only Morgan or Esi....so only for players that probably deserve a demotion at this stage

If we had managed to win most of those games Hayne ahd played at 5/8 last year - he would probably have stayed there, that's how fickle I think it all is...

the bolded part RE: Roberts to centre is why I suggested it overall and i think he would actually go better there as there wont be the huge expectation to be such a key playmaker and he can play more to his running game strength rather than be largely the one-trick pony that I think Lingard described him as in attack....and Roberts is ok, defensively.....

Never suggested dropping Sio or Blair - even though I know you're going through a process of elimination of who to drop, but as I say its only Esi or Morgan who would miss out - and let's face it, who else do we have? Horo is injured and clearly on the outer, Benny Smith is injured, Loko is done for the season and SK is probably loathe to bring up yet another rookie into this backline....??

Cheers Runaround Man, to me its just all about options and getting the team balance right....

RE: you're point about Hindy playing frontrow, its a pretty valid point right now, however, I stated in my original post, Hindy can stay in the 11 and just play like a frontrower. Right now he is playing what all the modern supercoaches call 'middle backrow' which is essentially a third frontrower on the field anyway and the role Gallen essentially plays at the Sharks.....with wider-running left and right backrowers....being your other second-rower and your lock. So he is already fulfilling that role as far as i can tell

and yep, Esi/Morgan in that left centre spot are sadly (for them personally) the weakest links in a fairly weak team right now. a few changes could really help spark the team

Can some of you people not remember the last truly golden era of Rugby League through the late 80's and most of the 90's when crowds were up and the league was scattered with brilliant players...?? because in those days, swapping players around in different positions to get the balance of the team right was always done - and the players (and coaches) were not so robotic and rigid and structured back then...

So my suggestion about switching Ben Roberts around comes of the back of that type of thinking and past successes in RL with such positional switches. Are you seriously telling me you aren't aware of; or don't remember of the days when players of the calibre of Laurie Daley, Brad Fittler and even Brett Kenny were swapped into the centres from 5/8 - and sometimes to lock??? Brett Kenny finished his days at Lock because he had lost some etc, but could still help the team by playing in a different position!!??

I'm not just talking at SOO level either. Although Daley and Fittler did swap around a lot in SOO, they also did so at club level as well for the benefit of the overall team structure....so if it was good enough for players of their calibre, it is sure as hell good enough for Benny Freakin' Roberts ok!!!! Especially if: (a) he is not performing on a consistent basis at 5/8 - which he is not, and (b) if there is someone better suited to taking control of the team (along with Sandow) in the halves - namely Jarryd Hayne

umm, no. it was obvious to everyone who can read and comprehend English that was clearly NOT what I said and in fact the opposite of what i said, so thanks for playing your game, but FAIL.

Bingo

Using past legends of the game and make out an average modern day first grader can do what they did, now thats a FAIL

are you seriously high right now????

look i appreciate the fact that you are admitting that Roberts is an average modern day first grader , but i am NOT suggesting that he can do what those legends did ffs....?!?!?

i simply used those players and positional switches to highlight the fact that players can successfully be switched around within teams at both the club and SOO level to benefit the team overall. Roberts doesn't need to have their level of skill or ability to make it work ffs!?!? I also never suggested that he has to perform to their level in making the switch either??

Sorry, but to me you are really grasping at straws now in an attempt to have a shot at me

i strongly beg to differ....maybe you and your mate Mickdo just aren't very intelligent individuals and can't keep up - ever consider that possibility?

I definitely considered that possibility.

I only have a 62 IQ - so intelligence isn't my strong point. But even a dolt like me can see that the author lacks very strongly in the making of intelligent threads.
