FFA Probe Jets Boss Flare-Up

EXCLUSIVE: Football Federation Australia have launched an investigation after Newcastle Jets boss Con Constantine allegedly threatened to throw a fan off the balcony at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Jets fans in the Squadron staged a protest over Newcastle's dismal defence of the A-League Championship this season by hanging their banners upside down at this weekend's game against Perth Glory.

But midway through the first half, security were ordered to take down the banners and five fans including Tim Verschelden, president of the Squadron, were summoned to Con's private box.

"Con abused every one of us, telling us we were nobodies, that we were worthless and threatening to ban Tim for life if he so much as opened his mouth, not to mention threatening to throw him off the balcony," said FourFourTwo blogger, Nigel Bosworth, one of those summoned.

"I have never in my life seen a more pathetic display. No one should ever have to put up with that sort of abuse, let alone the most loyal supporters of the club.

"It was a disgusting display and has forever widened the distance between the club and its supporter base."

He added: "The situation came about because we’d hung our banners upside down.

"[It was] a relatively benign form of protest, not aimed specifically at anyone, just a message stating we’re not happy.

"Given the state of the team on and off the pitch I don’t think anyone can say we are out of line with our mild protest. We’re not getting violent, we’re not ripping flares.

"It disgusts me to see a club that I support, and that represents the town I grew up in, be so low to people over an issue as trivial as a few banners turned upside down.

"Many of us have had a go at the club over their problems in the past few weeks, but up until the events that we witnessed on Sunday, we've held out hope that this was just an anomaly, just a bad year in the rollercoaster-ride history of football in Newcastle.

"I don’t think it’s possible to repair the damage done by this man, at least not in the short term."

Today the FFA confirmed they were aware of the reported confrontation and would be taking it further.

"This alleged incident has been brought to our attention and we are looking into it," said a spokeswoman.

Newcastle Jets declined to comment or deny the events when contacted by au.FourFourTwo.com.

And he's admitted so:
One out of the box: Jets owner 'abused' fans
Ben Smee

NEWCASTLE Jets owner Con Constantine admitted that he swore at a group of fans and threatened to throw one of them off the balcony of his private box during Sunday's win over Perth at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Football Federation Australia has confirmed it is investigating the incident involving Constantine and five leading members of the Squadron supporters group. One of those present, Nigel Bosworth, described the tirade as disgusting, abusive and arrogant. "No one should ever have to put up with that sort of abuse, let alone the most loyal supporters of the club," he said.

Constantine confirmed details of the incident yesterday, and said he had called Squadron president Tim Verschelden to his box during the first half to discuss fan protests taking place around the stadium.

Constantine admitted to abusing Verschelden and the four other fans, but told the Herald yesterday he remained firm in a threat to ban any disloyal troublemakers for life.

When asked if he had threatened to throw Verschelden from the box, Constantine replied: "Yeah, when you're upset with someone you say a lot of things.

"I swore at them because I knew they were wrong. At the end of the night Timmy and his family came back to the club, so he obviously didn't take it too badly."

Constantine said there was no room for troublemakers at the club, and that a number of fans were on a last warning. The protests that raised Constantine's ire, described as "ironic" and "tongue-in-cheek" by Squadron members yesterday, included placing three banners upside down on the Eastern Grandstand and fans waving white handkerchiefs.

Security guards removed the banners during the first half. Also taken down was a non-Squadron banner on the Western Grandstand that read "Newcastle Jets: We've Been Conned." A fan also brought a two-metre high wooden spoon to the match.

Constantine said such protests "killed the credibility" of the club. "If they think for one minute that I'm happy that I got the wooden spoon, they should know I'm a bad loser," he said. "If they have an issue with the club they could have come and addressed it with me."

Bosworth said supporters were loyal to Newcastle and the team, not Constantine. "It disgusts me to see a club that I support, and that represents the town I grew up in, be so low to people over an issue as trivial as a few banners turned upside down," Bosworth said.

Squadron member Gavin Austin said Constantine's comments were made in the heat of the moment, but described the way he treated the fans as "unbelievable". "I think the thing that upset us the most was the way we chose to demonstrate [our unhappiness] was in a pleasant way," Austin said. "If we instigated it then his reaction was a lot worse."

An FFA spokeswoman confirmed an investigation was under way. The spokeswoman confirmed the FFA would also speak with the fans involved.

Squadron members vacated their usual bay and members chanted for the removal of Constantine and coach Gary Van Egmond. Jets fans also flooded a popular internet forum yesterday, and many joined in calls for Constantine to sell the club.

That club is the joke of the A-League, nay Australian sport.

Their management and leadership is abysmal and the team's performances this season reflect that.

This isn't just another Mariners fan getting in line to kick the Jets when they're down (who wouldn't?) but to go from Champions to outright last in 12 months cements them as the perennial jokers of Australian sport.

Their owner/leader justifies this in a way so perfect, it's nearly inconceivable.

This pretty much sums up what is wrong with that mob. The club is the Newcastle United Jets, not Con Constantine. They will never be anything more than 1-season wonders until he dissappears from the scene and takes his ego with him.

I can't believe I am saying this, but I actually back The Scumdron here. They have every reason to be outraged at how very far their team has fallen from grace, especially in light of the fact that 50 minutes down the road, the team they defeated to take out last season's decider has backed up their premiership with a highly likely finals appearance and continues to be one of the best-run clubs in the League, despite having the smallest population base and amount of resources.

Interesting.

A Knights fan, living on the CC, who hates the Jets?

A French guy recently made a post on the Marinators forum with a few questions about the club.

Basically he said something along the lines of - The Marines came first in the league, defeated the Jets in final series, despite loosing that game the Jets still made the final and we're crowned Champions after only beating us once throughout the season.

" For a frenchy, this sounds not so logical"

You have to applaud the Squardron for their protest in a non-violent and comical matter. The 2m high wooden spoon is a classic. For the good of the League, I hope this muppet is outsted sooner rather than later.

What other team or individual has fallen with such a ferocious thud?

Only the Bulldogs come to mind and they're screwed on a different level.
Don't get me wrong, we've had a rather forgetful season and not for one second am I trying to sugar-coat the season as a whole and say that everything is hunky-dorey because quite obviously it's not. I just find it rather comical that a Central Coast fan tries to say they're not laying the boot in, when really, the Jets and Mariners hate each other ...

Following the Knights has nothing to do with them coming from Newie. Newcastle is League heartland anyway, going to Knights games at EAS and Jets games at the same venue there is a notable difference between the general supporter demographic.

Attending matches for the Knights and Jets are two completely different experiences. Not being a fan of either club, I can tell you Knights matches are better run, with better security and a better demographic.

Tim Smith the poor bastard.

Going from champs to spooners is pretty shocking, even being the lowest paid team last year we managed a GF win, you can't expect that each year.

You get what your pay for.
