Finals Week 2: Sharks vs Panthers

It's incredibly hard as I don't think getting rid of Maloney next year is the right call. He was awful tonight but we don't make it to the finals without him. We were all on the Maloney bandwagon last week after all. In saying that, when Maloney spots a hole, rarely does he ever take it himself. Obvious as he is older and not very fast. Instead he gives it straight to Kikau - which is fair enough. But that is where Luai could be so bloody dangerous. We need to suss out the outside interest in Luai for next year. If he is happy enough to wait then maybe that's alright but if he is thinking of leaving then we may have to let Jimmy go for our long-term future. I do think Luai should have a place in the team but if Maloney's still there next year I can't see anywhere for him outside of on the bench and that probably won't work as we currently don't have a quality 80-minute hooker.

This one hurts a lot because we had this game in the palm of our hands at 20-20, Cronulla were on the ropes and we were running downhill, unfortunately this game is a game of inches and is exemplified by Townsend only just slotting his field goal and Cleary only just missing his.

Still though, we can't get out of jail every week, imagine how good this team could be if they stopped digging themselves such a big hole in the first half of games.

Maloney was very poor tonight, I think I've said this before but he is a double-edged sword, he is a great leader and directs the boys around the park well, but when he isn't on his glaring weaknesses are constantly exposed by good teams, Sharks clearly know this as much as we do and constantly targeted his side in defence, and tonight he just didn't offer anything near enough in attack to make up for his short-comings, still though I think we should stick with him because I don't think there are any experienced 5/8s on the market that is an upgrade over him.

Katoa isn't good enough for our team and needs to be replaced going forward, I really hope Gould goes back on his statement of bringing guys into the team only from within, this has been echoed a lot but it's clear we need more experienced guys out there to help out this young team, I hope we chase Korisau hard because he is exactly what we need.

On a positive note I think despite all the scrutiny the media gave us over sacking Griffin we turned it around big time with an inexperienced coach at the top level, I wouldn't even mind giving Ciraldo the fulltime gig because he got a lot out of us in a short period of time under a lot of pressure, it looked like we were heading straight for a week 1 smashing but we turned it on against the Warriors and put up a hell of a fight in tonight's second half (I know we did that a lot this year but to do it in a final against Crounlla is even better imo)

Maloney didn’t stand up enough this season. He was shit last night. Moylan has comfortably had a better year.

At 20 all onwards we were a mess, we needed someone to take control and no one did. Maloney’s defence and attitude isn’t right to be our captain. Seriously consider letting him go, if we can an Isaac like or another good hooker.

Like most of our issues it is just inexperience. Was scoreboard watching when all he had to do was get fast crisp service out of dummy half

I seem to be in the minority so maybe I’m just wrong but I do think there’s a lot of upside with him, a full off season, some more experience & he’ll be a different proposition. I see a lot more in him then say a Brailey or Liddle or any other Hooker with similar experience level.

The last two weeks he was tremendous, has an average game & people calling for his head & saying he’s not good enough.

Woods not getting penalised with three minutes left when he was two metres to the side of marker is hilarious. Should have had the chance to take the two but certainly not surprised our season's been ended again as a result of complete refereeing incompetence.
Seen it a million times in close games. It's unbelievably rare that any ref is going to give a penalty in such a close game with a few minutes left. It's like golden point.

Sharks were ridiculously quick off their defensive line all night... or some would say consistently offside... but that’s what makes them such a good finals side, you give them an inch they take a mile. Refs wanted a free flowing game & were hesitant to call offside, so Sharks used that to their advantage. They use Fifita superbly, using him on an edge is super effective & keeps the defence back peddling. Would love to see us use Tamou this way occasionally.

They also attack the ball every tackle whether it’s with a forearm, head etc. Lewis’ tackle on Blake was a perfect example. Frustrating but smart.

Frustrating. This is simply a dumb team, and it doesn't look like anything will ever change there.
I've been a supporter of Maloney generally, but the way he handled that game was unforgivable.
I know he's injured, but it isn't a brain injury is it?

Someone explain to me the wisdom of putting our two best props on the bench, while leaving the hopelessly out of form pair to get us off to one of our now infamous starts.

The sooner Luai replaces Maloney and Merrin is packed off the better.

Just watched it again.

Merrin: Can go. He's had two straight rubbish years. Really loved him after 2016 so it's a shame.

Maloney: Either retires from rep or goes. I'd be happy with Luai permanently.

Katoa: Has to go. There is no question on this. Has had one good game since Wallace retired and cost us the field goal last night with terrible decision making and slow service. If he's our hooker next year I won't be a member. I was so hopeful on him after last week.

RCG: Won't judge him as he was good before his injury.

Tamou: Has become one of our best forwards. Keep him coming off the bench next year. Our games are turning because our bench middles are doing such a good job.
