Finals Week 2 vs Souths

Now before I get shot down, I am very proud and surprised that we got to this game after such a capitulation over 2 months. However rest assured, Souths will be up for this big time.

Listening to Seibold on the radio today talking us up, watching some of the press starting to back us, one would think that one game has suddenly changed the whole dynamic of the finals series. Therein lies the danger. I really dislike all the hype, all the press from players, etc etc ... Keep it low key and humble. Like Graham did last week, where he basically told people to go put $$$ on Brisbane.

Im not saying we cant jag another win, but comments from Mary in the post game presser , i.e " are we now the form team of the comp", and players talking the team up etc could backfire. Im not saying they should be banned from comments, but it seems we are falling into a trap here. Damien Cook was very generous of his assessment of our chances. Suddenly, Mitchell Pearce thinks we are a good shot, as does Matty Elliot.

Its 48 hours from game day, and we seem to be the talk of the town.

I would much prefer that the media, other team players, pundits, all back the Bunnies, and our team remain very low key.

Stories about the dragons being talk of the town sell papers, create interest, etc.

This forum has gone from one of 'we are done', 'we are hopeless', 'axe the coach's, ''we will be out of the finals in straight sets, etc to extreme optimism, belief we can beat south's and roosters, hats off to Mary for the Brisbane win, Brisbane win being one of the best ever, we are a strong team, etc.

Everyone loves to get wrapped up in a positive tide.

I tell you, if there's one story that could become one of the biggest in recent years it would be Ben hunt taking the team to a premiership this year after the last 2 months, depression, social media abuse, etc. I'm not saying it woll happen, but that story will be something else if it does :)

I don’t think Souths’s loss to the Storm would deflate them. If anything they played a strong game in Melbourne against a strong Storm outfit and should of won. I think they will be pumped just like Saints will be and both teams will be desperate which means they will come out breathing fire and setup up a bell ringer of a game.

Just remember Parra last year after they lost to the Storm week 1. They came out totally deflated and were run over by the Cows.

Souths is a better team but at the same time they have lost 4 of 5.

Getting to the Burgess boys is the key. Tariq and Graham need to shake them up.

We will need a bit of luck to go our way. Reynolds or Cook to cop a HIA and not come back. Burgess to have the dropsies.
I picked Sims MOM last week and it came off so this week I am going Ben Hunt MOM.
It's going to be a tense night, expectations need to be managed but we can do this!

It should be care free footy for us, just like last sunday. Pressure off and release the shackles and throw it around. Maybe it will come off and maybe it won't but other teams hate playing against that style in a final with it all on the line and it gets into their head as well. We can't try and get into a grinding style of game with us because it will suit them way more and we'll get done.

TruSaint..your reading too much into the interviews. No-one wants the favourite tag in a cut throat final and will say and do all to show humility. They never say what they really think anyway. If you dont show confidence you'll will likely lose..and if you show too much..you'll likely lose.
Mary's comment was having a go at the media cause we have really won 3 out of 4 instead of him getting hammered about all the losses. I could tell he does not think we are the form team..he was astonished and proud as the press gallery into that performance. Matty Elliott always backs Dragons and Piercey did only because Matty did as they were working together. In fact Piercey looked like he did not care... he just got asked.
Souths will be up for it and face facts..with our injuries and they at full strength they have to be raging favourites with the bookies, media etc. We may be over achieving to beat them this week...but as I said last week where there is life....hope....I just hope we are up for 80+ minutes battle too.

We should know Damien Cook better than anyone.

Most of it definitely comes down to how they judge surrender tackles, play the balls and the ten metres but they should really have a few things in place for Cook.

Mary will not let them
Play care free this week. He will want them to play tight and disciplined. In a recent article, he highlights possession as the key to Saints success and consequently his players will be drilled on holding the ball and not giving Souths cheap possession and field position. In my opinion, this strategy will not see Saints playing a carefree or expensive style unless they are in Souths 30m zone.

If Reynolds happens to be a broken toy, we are in with a serious show.

Inglis not looking too flash either.

Hoping JDB can play 60 minutes at a high level on Saturday.

Sims and Frizz need to put in another super performance.

If they do, they will inspire the young blokes to play their best.

Nothing to lose boys.

Give it everything plus 10%.

Souths see the key to slowing our pack is slow down Frizzell in the ruck. Watch em wrestle Frizzell with 3 or 4 in the tackle and slow him up. Coach was talking about how many seconds and how quick he plays the ball (do you believe what coaching has come down to - over analysed and over complicating in a lot of areas IMO) mentioning he is quick at 4 secs...I believe Souths will play like they did in Round 10...rush up and try and hit hard in defence..and wrestle like Melb as refs will put the whistle away.. Attack.... look out Lomaz or (Aitken - hope not) / Hunt & Nene...the kicks from Reyno and the sweeping backline plays using Sutton sometimes as a decoy or play out the back with Walker, Johnston or Inglis onto Jennings.
Over to you supercoach Mary for the counterplan....if you can

Plan is simple.

Use Frizz as decoy runner

Send ball wide to Lomax with Dufty running off him for inside pass and Nene ready for Lomax flick pass.

Grubber behind defence as they move up fast on our outside backs.

Sims to smash Reynolds early.

JDB to halve the rib cage of Inglis.

Our halves to run the ball early and often.

Dragons star Tyson Frziell aiming for another dominant performance
AFL
r0_204_5411_3246_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Force: Tyson Frizell and the Dragons forward pack were dominant on Sunday and he's confident of a repeat performance against South Sydney on Saturday night. Picture: AAP Image/Darren England.

Tyson Frizell could sense all week that the Dragons were going to come out firing against Brisbane on Sunday afternoon.

The attitude that had been missing at times in recent weeks had returned, and it showed on Sunday afternoon in the side’s 48-18 demolition job of the Broncos.

It’s a mindset that has been on display again this week as they prepare for yet another challenge, a South Sydney forward pack led by Sam Burgess.

“It was there right from the start of the week, leading into the game,” Frizell said. “The intensity was brought to another level and I think that showed on the weekend.

“Leading into this match, everything will be pretty much similar and hopefully we can put in a similar performance against Souths.”

While the two teams split their matches this year, it was the Rabbitohs round 10 victory in May that confirmed their status as a premiership contender and exposed potential St George Illawarra weaknesses.

In winning 24-10, South Sydney ran rampant through the middle of the field, with Burgess and Angus Crichton dominating and Damien Cook making metres at will from dummy half as he outshone Cam McInnes in a performance that secured him the Blues number nine jersey.

The Dragons haven’t forgotten that game, Frizell said, and the team is fully aware of the importance of shutting down the South Sydney forwards and avoiding a repeat performance on Saturday.

“That’s the only way we can stop them. If we can limit their go forward through the middle with their big boys, it stops guys like Cody Walker and Damien Cook tearing shreds off the edges and through the middle. That’s probably our focus, like every week, to go up against their forwards and do a good job of it.”

“Souths have probably been the form pack of the year and they’re playing really good footy, hopefully we can make the most of our opportunities and get on top.”

While eager to prevent the South Sydney forwards running rampant, Frizell said the Dragons haven’t spent too much time focusing on their opposition.

Instead, the Dragons are focused on repeating last week’s dominant forwards performance, knowing they will be very hard to stop if they are able to replicate that effort.

“We’re pretty much worrying about ourselves this week, as we did last week and in previous weeks. We haven’t changed too much in our style of footy, we just had more intent with the things that we did.

“If we give ourselves an opportunity to play and give ourselves an equal amount of possessions, I’m sure we can hopefully do a job on Souths.”

KICKOFF: Dragons turnaround about character not confidence
AFL
r0_0_3524_2349_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

UNWAVERING: Dragons hooker Cameron McInnes said it was the character of his side rather than form that gave him belief heading into last week's elimination final against Brisbane. Picture: Adam McLean

IT'S often said about confidence that no one knows where it comes from, or where it goes.

Speaking to Dragons players through their late-season form slump, they were certainly battling with the latter. Not that they'd readily admit it – to do so in rugby league is one of those cardinal sins.

It difficult because whenever as side is caught in a slump, the questions will inevitably be about confidence – and they're persistent. James Graham seemed jack of them in his media appearances last week.

“I was just in a funny mood last week,” Graham told Kickoff on Wednesday.

"Some of the questions you get asked, I feel, are just time filler and get a bit boring. I'm boring myself talking about it.”

Perhaps he gets tired of those questions because he's been around long enough to know you can't just click your fingers and find confidence. You certainly won't find it by answering questions about the lack of it.

Confidence and form will always ebb and flow. It's why coaches and successful footy sides don't bet their full stake on confidence. Instead, they'll speak about character.

Paul McGregor certainly does. It's been a constant mantra as he said before his side's match against Newcastle two weeks ago: “Whoever's making noise on the outside, they don't get that 80 minutes each week, players do.”

That ethos meant McGregor saw last week's 48-18 demolition of the Broncos at Suncorp – the club's second ever finals win at the venue – less a form turnaround as the passing of a character test.

Character is more bankable than form. It's where Graham derived his faith through that period, where form and confidence was low.

“It wouldn't have been very good if I was coming out and saying we were done, let's be honest,” Graham said of his faith.

“Thinking back, I looked at the potential within the group. It's OK to say that but you've got to look for some evidence. Without making it all about looking back, you look at what we did, and feed that fire.

“You know it's still there, it doesn't just disappear, sometimes you've just got to try your best to unlock it.”

Hooker Cameron McInnes’ faith was similarly unwavering, and it had more to do with the type of people around him than current form.

"The belief never left us,” McInnes said.

“I haven't been around for that long but I've played footy my whole life. You go through rough patches, things don't go your way, you have performances you're not proud of, but I looked at the characters we have in this team.

“There's no arrogance, there's no ego. There's too many guys who are willing to work hard and put it all on the line. There was no way it could continue the way we were going.

“There's plenty of teams over the last five years that have gone up and down and up and down but if you have strong character in your team good things happen.

“You look at Melbourne and their values. They've stayed at the top and, while they've had a lot of turnover of players, the character of their squad is what keeps them at the top. I believe we have that here at St George.”

McInnes said that's what his side leaned on in Brisbane and what they'll lean on against South Sydney on Saturday, a match where they will once again start huge underdogs.

“We were all on the same page, we all had a common goal of just leaving everything on the field and not die wondering,” he said.

“We were obviously aware that not many people rated our chances very highly but we didn't care who thought what about us. It was a finals game, the atmosphere was outstanding and if you can't lift for that situation you'll never be able to.

“It was a sudden death game so, whether that brought the best out of us, I don't know, but we're in the exact same situation this week so we'll be able to do it again.

"We've got an opportunity and that's all we want, that's all we need, that opportunity. It doesn't matter where we finished, we're at the same starting point as Souths are now. We have all the belief in the world.”
