St George Illawarra Dragons still aim to do 'something special' in September starting with elimination final against Brisbane Broncos

  • St George Illawarra will put their season on the line in Brisbane on Sunday, facing the Broncos in an elimination final at Suncorp Stadium.

The Dragons’ fate was sealed late on Sunday afternoon in the last game of the regular season as Brisbane dismantled a hapless Manly side.

Their 48-16 win allowed Brisbane to climb above St George Illawarra into sixth place and give the Broncos hosting rights for their do or die clash in week one of the finals.

The idea of the Dragons facing an elimination final would have been ridiculed as little as nine weeks ago as St George Illawarra sat proudly at the top of the NRL table.

But a devastating end of season fade out saw the Dragons slide out of minor premiership contention, then the top four.

While Ben Hunt has been made to carry much of the blame for the Dragons’ poor form, the truth is the former Queensland and Australia halfback has been playing behind a well-beaten forward pack for a number of weeks.

He has also had to do without halves partner Gareth Widdop, though coach Paul McGregor confirmed the captain would be a definite starter to return from a dislocated shoulder against the Broncos.

Widdop was in line to play against Newcastle on Saturday, but McGregor opted to hold the England international back one week after the Dragons saw their top four hopes evaporate after their 38-0 hammering at the hands of Canterbury in the penultimate round.

The Dragons could also welcome back Euan Aitken (hamstring) and Jason Nightingale (neck) for the trip to Brisbane.

And McGregor said he believed his side were still capable of doing something special in September despite their late season crash.

“I think you saw a fair bit of it [against Newcastle] in our [defence]. We really wanted to get back in to being a strong defensive side which we were for the first 15 or 16 rounds,” he said.

“We haven’t been of late so today was a part of that. We certainly found at different stages we’ve got to be better, there’s no doubt about that.

“We’ve got Gaz back next week so obviously our attack is going to improve straight away. So defensively we need to get that right.

“But next week’s a different competition. She’s knock out footy so both teams are level. We’ve beaten all the teams that are in there. So why not?”

The match will continue Wayne Bennett’s long history with the Dragons.

It is 25 years since he guided Brisbane to back-to-back grand final wins over St George and eight years since he took the St George Illawarra joint venture to their only premiership.

'You don't need to tear them to shreds': Boyd's Hunt defence
Adam Pengilly3 September 2018 — 6:19pm

Darius Boyd walked into a school recently to talk about mental health and kids wanted to discuss his mate Ben Hunt.

They know how much money he's earning, how his form has dipped, how his head has gone down and his shoulders have slumped, and how his team began losing. They haven't just been told about it, it's been shoved down their throats. Every word that's been said, they know.

Whipping boy: Ben Hunt has borne the brunt of Dragons fans' frustrations.

It raised alarm bells for the Broncos captain, one of the game's quietest men and also one of its most considered.

He walked into the launch of the NRL finals series on Monday, pulled on the helmet, strapped the pads on and took guard. For Hunt. The man he used to play with, but comes up against in a high stakes final on Sunday.

The easy option would be to write Hunt, St George Illawarra's gun playmaker, has found an unlikely ally in the form of an old teammate who hopes to end his season this weekend. But he's not an unlikely ally. He's a mate. One who has been open about a mental health battle.

'Very dark place': Pressure mounts on Dragons' Hunt
If anyone was going to stick up for Hunt, Boyd would be the first person. He has watched with dismay as the same little No.7 who ran rings around opposition in his new colours for half the season has been run into the ground of late.

Boyd takes up the story: "I lost a lot of love for the game this year, not the game itself but the negativity that comes with it," he shrugs. "I’ve just noticed it. Whether social media is a big part of it I’m not too sure. There’s a lot of negativity.

"I love the game. I play it, but I’m a fan as well. The negativity, the drama and the scrutiny that comes with it is disappointing as a fan and as a player."

A crisp cutout pass away from Boyd stood Rabbitohs leader Greg Inglis, himself speaking openly about his own mental health battle. Both will lead their proud clubs in September, both a chance of going all the way.

Who knows what will happen in this competition? Of all the storylines that loom in a frighteningly unpredictable start to the finals series, none come close to those emerging from the clash between two of the NRL's best known brands: the Broncos and Dragons.

There is Brisbane's last No.7, who became an instant saint in red and white, but has supposedly turned into a sinner because he's having a rough patch. There is Wayne Bennett, on the outer at the Broncos and up against his old team. There is Boyd, back against the club he won a Clive Churchill Medal with. And there is St George Illawarra's record of not winning in Brisbane since 2009, Boyd's first year at the club.

But the conversation always seems to revert to Hunt, the genuine halfback the Dragons have searched more than a decade for who risks being spat out because of what some say is a cyber sewer.

Should the criticism come with the cheque book?

"He’s a good fella, he’s a good mate," Boyd says. "But more importantly we’re all human beings. We play rugby league for the love and the fun of it.

"Yes, it’s a business and there is criticism – it should be constructive – but it doesn’t matter what you get paid and what you do for a job … there’s no reason to put people down and be negative all the time.

"In my opinion we all do the best we can in life and if someone wants to pay you what they pay you then congratulations, you’ve done a great job in life. Just because we’re in that public spotlight … you don’t need to start tearing them to shreds.

"The criticism has been very unfair and unwarranted. Unfortunately that is life sometimes and we have to put up with negative people and naysayers. I think it has gone too far."

At the start of the year, Hunt was asked about the intensity he expected from wearing the famous No.7 Dragons jersey. He said he'd been the halfback for the only team in a town which rides every Broncos play, let alone game. He would handle it.

This week, Dragons skipper Gareth Widdop returns from a shoulder injury. He was quick to stress he's not St George Illawarra's saviour, even quicker to suggest Hunt would get back to having fun.

"Early in the year when we were going well he was the hero," Widdop said. "Now we’re struggling he’s copping all the blame. It’s disappointing to see, but thankfully Ben’s a pretty laidback sort of character.

"I think moving forward he’s got a massive game and going up to Brisbane he’ll be really excited for it. [And] we know within the four walls at the Dragons what we’re capable of and if we turn up with the right attitude we know what we can do on our day."

For the record, Boyd thinks Hunt will be one of his side's best players on his return to Brisbane.

Let's hope the kids hear that too.

Yep of course, because it is in the best interests of management to be in charge of a shit team rather than a good one.

Straighter Shooter

It's in the best interests of this management to run a closed shop, protect their jobs and enjoy the gravy train, irrespective of what that means for team performance. Like a political party controlled by self-interested factional bosses. If you can't see that, well I don't know what to say.

There's a clear difference between a political party and a sporting club.

We will always need a government, so those controlling politicians can do that without any fear of reprise.

A sporting club on the other hand, if not run well, will lose membership, revenue and eventually shut down, exactly like a business.

The management have a clear incentive for the club to be successful in order to keep their jobs, simple as that.

Perhaps you and some of the other old codgers who are deliberately politicizing this forum each and every day should go and join a political party and get involved.

Wake up from fairy land.

The club is a work in progress. Success doesn't happen overnight, there are no quick fixes. The fact that some member's clocks aren't far off their last chime doesn't change that. We're a chance of finals success, so pull your head in and get behind them.

The same coach and same board, what's your point? You and the circle jerkers on here need to wake up and realise that the landscape of the NRL has shifted. This isn't the 50s and 60s anymore, we're not the dominant team of the NRL. As much as you all like to jump up and down and place blame on our administration, the NRL has changed so much that there is nothing we can do to bring those days back. The sooner you and others learn to deal with that the better. If you'd prefer to support a team who has it easier than us, like the roosters, storm or Broncos, no one is stopping you.

Do you work for the Dragons? are you on the board? or have a relative in one of those positions?

These are the only reasons I can think of for this ridiculous rant and acceptance of the mismanagement of the club. In one breath you tell us its a work in progress and then in the next breath nothing can change because its not the 50s or 60s anymore.

Pity you didn't see the club in its prime, you might not be so accepting with how its been run into the ground.

I wish, that'd be a great job.

Yes our club is a work in progress, we're building towards being a good team who can win a premiership in the next 2-3 years. Will we ever go back to winning 11 premierships in a row like the circle jerkers expect? No, that is impossible in the current day. 2 in a row is a rare achievement.

Every sporting team, business, government or even someone's life in general has peaks and troughs, ups and downs. If your faith in this team is not unwavering when tested (which is the case for most in here, judging by posts) you are clearly a fair weather fan. You clearly don't understand the changing landscape of the NRL nor would you attempt to. It's time for those people to shut up and support the team. Stop calling for everyone's head because you don't understand the modern version of the NRL.

Our team has a long way to go before its going to win a premiership and every fan has the right to voice their opinion on how they see the "progress" or non-progress is going. This nonsense about a real fan accepts whatever crap is dished up and just rolls with the punches is fantasy.

No one on here has mentioned winning another 11 premierships back to back so why is this even part of your argument. What is upsetting the fan base is the secrecy and nepotism shown in decisions by the board, the management and the coaching staff. They want to see a team that is competitive and doesn't capitulate in games.

I don't know how old you are or how long you've been a fan but you have no right to criticise any fan that has been one for 50 or 60 years or more. These fans "fair weather fans" understand the changing NRL landscape better than you do, they've seen the changes first hand and the bad management that has not kept up and led to the demise of the club over at least the last two decades.
