Flanno's New Signings

yeah - I backed off a bit and thought that waiting till mid season may be prudent but the market is so cut throat and the real coaching talent so sparse I'm thinking the same as you.

My biggest fear is, if Flanno poached, who the f**k do we end up with?

That has me curled up in a ball on the floor!
Sometimes it's worth taking a punt. This is a calculated punt, history suggests this is a punt worth taking.

Cronulla saw something in SF, as Ricky Stuart's assistant, took a punt & made SF head coach 2010-13, then the pep tide 12 months.

Despite that, Shark's still took a punt and re-signed him, because they saw something. He then delivered Sharks their ultimate prize, a premiership 2016.

There is a certain amount of luck as well, but this guy knows what he is doing to get a team in a position to take advantage of the luck.

I think it's a great punt!

I still think that any extension can wait until at least just past the halfway mark of the comp next year. It would be better all round. If another club wants him after 2026, we should have the last say in it anyway I should imagine, unless the Dragons are on the bottom rung from the get go next year and remain there through most of the first half of the comp which I can't see happening, but who knows? then the hard decisions will need to be made.

I think he is worth extending now BUT

As the board, I would ask him where he is at. Basically say things are going the right way, we are happy with the approach and when he wants to we can sit down. As a club, it’s better to wait till we see how early 25 goes, and then sit down once the new CEO is in place. It’s also a chance to increase his value between now and then.

On the other hand, if he is getting approaches, and wants it sorted earlier then I’d be willing to sit down with him in the off season, but otherwise it waits till day mid season (Don’t want to destabilise early season). that said if we extended now I’d have performance clauses. Say top 12 in 25 or club has the o-toon to dismiss at cheap rate, top 8 in 26 or the same.

it’s about an open discussion and long term partnership for the right coach.

In my humble opinion, irrespective of results this year we have to remember we are in a transitional phase where our head coach has to build a squad which consists of experienced old heads with an eye to blooding our future stars and keeping other clubs at bay from poaching them.

In hindsight, I think the footy gods were with us when Ryles knocked us back and Flanno became available. I’m not saying Ryles won’t be a good coach but he is a rookie and it’s a known fact that the transition from an assistant to full time coach is a massive learning curve and we didn’t need a coach on training wheels but someone who could build a team and club from the ground up.

Hopefully at some stage this year, they’ll all sit down and nut out a deal and I’m sure Flanno would like to see his vision for the club come to fruition in the coming years.

The fact that the board wanted Ryles is proof he was the wrong choice. They always need the right decision forced upon them

Do agree with what you are saying mate. But the conservative side of me thinks mid next year. I would really like to see our club operating as a whole well oiled machine in Flanno second year with some of the players he wanted plus juniors coming through the ranks. I think Flanno is excellent now I want to see an excellent club.

Like I said, Ryles might end up being the next big thing but I don’t think we were in a position to roll the dice again after previous dud coaches. His team at Parramatta already have one of the best halves combinations in the comp so it’s probably going to make his debut as a coach a lot easier than if he had to come to a mess like ours and basically start from scratch. It was a sliding doors moment that worked inadvertently worked out in our favour.

If he has two more years on his current contract and there’s some anxiety about him being poached, what is served by an extension of his contract? Contracts are either binding or not, so isn’t it irrelevant whether they’re for two years or ten years?

Both Flannos have been given an opportunity as coach and player. Surely, Flanno would be grateful in many ways if an extension were offered. Entertaining the thought of leaving would not even be within the realm of possibility.
I'm certain the Flannos haven't got the Bunt in them.

Contracts are binding unless terminated for breach or by mutual consent via negotiation.

Never “not worth the paper they’re written on” which is an idiom that sprung up n the 90s in comparison to “honoring” the contract as in the 1960’s.

I can see Wests being desperate for a coach in the near future. All the money they spent on new recruits going to waste wasn't part of the plan.

That’s because we have no belief in Benji Anyway as long as the Tigers do that’s all they have to worry about. But I do see your point.
