I have been meaning to mention that $50 k contract ever since Izzy was mentioned to be coming back and the cap was an issue.

Seriously, Saint's can get one of the world's best centres back for an NRL minimum wage for a season. Controversy? Zilch.
Surely we can (they can {NRL}) ensure the same?
Publicity for the game like it was back then?

The Gasnier debacle is probably the reason why Schubert will never let it happen again. The loophole is probably closed now, as dodgy as it was at the time.

It was a multi year contract heavily backloaded though... Only for him to conveniently retire at the end of 2010... They're probably still paying him, it just doesn't count under the cap since he's no longer playing.

Can't we just sign him next year to a 55 k contract with 20k match payments then the following year in 2014 assuming he plays 20 games he must be valued for at least around 400k under the cap - this basically means we get him for free (well only 55k ) for 2013?

It's why big Dell only cost the Dragons $55k against the cap while earning 175k in total (55k base +24x5k match payments). The assessment against the cap is based on previous years games (0) - so that part is irrelevant!

If we were smart, we'd do that kind of contract for the first year, then move him over to a fixed amount contract for latter seasons (so null cap hit for the match payments effectively).
I hate the way the NRL forbids clubs from registering contracts when they're playing within the rules and being creative... Small wonder clubs start to cheat...

Stuart says NRL could lose Folau

Parramatta coach Ricky Stuart says the club is "punching its head against a brick wall" in negotiations with the NRL over Israel Folau and warns the game risks missing out on the superstar if decisions aren't made quickly.

After Folau announced at the start of the month he was leaving the AFL, Stuart said the former Test and Queensland Origin back remained anxious to sign with the Eels, but that red tape was still getting in the way.

The NRL must give the green light to Folau's return to the code before any contract can be ratified, just like rugby convert Sonny Bill Williams' Sydney Roosters deal is yet to be rubber-stamped by officials at Rugby League Central.

Stuart said the saga has dragged on to the point where he can no longer be directly involved and he's leaving negotiations to club chief executive Ken Edwards.

"I said early in the piece that we'll move heaven and earth to get Izzy to the club because that's where he wants to play. He's come out and said that, he's from here, he's got a number of close mates here, but we're doing that and it's been a long time so I really don't know where it's going to end up," said Stuart on Wednesday.

"But I can't concentrate on that any more ... all my energy and responsibility has to be put into the team here."

Stuart said no deal had been done between Folau and the Eels and he wanted to distance himself from the specifics of the negotiations between the club and the NRL.

But he was adamant the NRL, who is yet to appoint a CEO, needed to make a swift decision on Folau's status.

"It'd be disappointing for him to go to another code," he said.

"... I've just being working hard as the club has with the league to have him play here but we seem to be just punching our heads against a brick wall.

"We're trying to do the right thing by the game and by the league in being transparent ... it would be just nice to get people in positions to make decisions.

"I just know it's getting quite boring and tedious in terms of taking so long, I just wish someone could make a decision, say yes or no and then we can move on."

It can't possibly be money. Given the fact that the NRL are yet to approve the SBW deal as well, I assume they are just wasting everyone's time by having not yet made a decision. The idiots don't realize that the longer they wait, the more likely it is a rival code will snatch both players up.
