Clearly he is a major part of the team and someone you want to keep. However, if we are paying him significantly more then I believe he needs to make the step up to become an elite player of the Cam Smith, Cooper Cronk or JT level. I would really love to see this happen but it will start with becoming more of leader. Ricky is big on this sort of stuff so hopefully Hayne can develop under him.

Well if we sign izzy on a back ended contract of four years his salary won't hurt with Haynes massive money next year...maybe it's hoppa coming that is the problem? So if I understand correctly if we sign izzy without the nrl helping we have to shed more players from the current squad....I so what's the problem their are some I'm sure Ricky has figured out wont be too much of a loss

I have absolute 100% faith Ricky will turn hayne into the sort of player he is capable of being. Sandow on the other hand? Not sure. I think Kelly is the one we will see more from long term

The thing that concerns me about Luke Kelly this year is his LBA stat - zero. He didn't play many games but zero is still zero.

We should have seen the writing on the wall with Mortimer's LBA stat in 2009. Heaps of linebraks, but he only made about three LBAs, in a team where it was very easy to put blokes through gaps.

Joseph Paulo, Matt Ryan and Nathan Smith have signed upgrades.

The problem isnt Sandow, it's Hayne...he's on huge money next year.

I wouldn't expect those 3 players to have received much of an upgrade though. If Ryan and Smith are earning any more than 80 to 90k theyre being overpaid. Even Paulo I wouldn't expect to be getting much more than 100k. You could pretty much make them a direct swap for three of the cheaper players in.our 25 we're not retaining, like McGuire, Atkins, and Johnny Mannah.

So is this turning into a situation where we're going to have to tell a player or two that their services are not needed for 2013 and to find another club? Maybe that's what Hayne was referring to in the following:

The 24-year-old said fullback would be a major challenge for a man returning to the code after two seasons out and said speculation surrounding Folau has brought a mixture of excitement and anxiety to Parramatta.
"There's boys here who, if he comes, are going to be out of the team, so yes and no," said Hayne.

When I initially read it, I thought that meant they'd be relegated to Wenty. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Is it possible for us to simply release players for next year, pay out their contracts and not have that count against the cap? After all, if they're released in 2012 and any contractual obligations are discharged via a settlement, then why should that count against the 2013 cap as they wont play that season.

Its got to count under the cap somewhere. If we released them before round 13 this year we could have counted them under this years cap assuming we hd room. Too late for that now though.

Not really, but it's rubbery...

I like your optimism. I hope you are right as it would be great to see Hayne tearing teams a new backside.

Rhinos' move on Tonga may allow Folau to join Eels

INTEREST in Willie Tonga from English Super League premiers Leeds might help Parramatta to sign Israel Folau, with the Eels having been told to shed players to accommodate the returning AFL star under the salary cap for next season.
Despite Parramatta's release of Tonga's brother Esi and Kiwi second-rower Justin Horo to Manly earlier this week, Fairfax Media understands that the club has only $110,000 left under the salary cap.
The Eels are looking to find third-party deals for Folau, who was granted a release from his $1.5 million-per-season AFL contract two weeks ago, but NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert has ruled out allowing them to sign the 23-year-old for $110,000.

Folau wants to play for Parramatta but the only way the club can fit him under the salary cap next season is if other players leave. Sources in England have said that Leeds are keen to sign Tonga.
Rhinos boss Garry Hetherington has said the club is on the hunt for a ''quality centre'' from the NRL and it is understood his focus is on Tonga, who has another year to run on his contract with the Eels.
The 29-year-old former Queensland and Australian centre might consider the move if a long-term deal is offered. However, it is understood Parramatta officials will not ask any player to leave so they can accommodate Folau and hope to resolve the situation with the NRL.
Parramatta chief executive Ken Edwards and recruitment manager Peter Nolan have discussed with Schubert and NRL interim chief executive Shane Mattiske how the club could add Folau to its roster, but new coach Ricky Stuart is frustrated by the delays.
Because of Parramatta's salary cap issue, the Eels and Folau have not been able to negotiate a contract as they do not know how much the club can afford to pay him next season.
With up to 20 players off contract at the end of next season, the club does not have any problems beyond 2013 but it is struggling to finalise a deal that is acceptable to the NRL.
The case has echoes of the Greg Inglis saga two years ago after he was forced to leave Melbourne because of the club's salary cap scandal.
However, the NRL refused to register his contract with Brisbane and South Sydney also went through weeks of protracted negotiations and were forced to release centre Beau Champion after Schubert ruled third-party payments had to come under the salary cap.
At the time a disillusioned Inglis, who recently signed a $4million, five-year deal with the Rabbitohs, believed that the NRL did not want him and considered switching to AFL after meeting Essendon coach James Hird.
Complicating the Folau case is that he was on huge money from the AFL to help promote Greater Western Sydney Giants, but would not command the same value in the NRL as he has not played league for two years.
However, his signing with the Eels would still be a marketing coup for the NRL in the battle between the codes for western Sydney and has already helped Parramatta to sell memberships.
