Four Broncos cleared of sex assault allegations

Yes the Broncos keep saying that. It's time for them to prove it, and actually cut a player who isn't just a fringe first grader. O'Neil is the only one, but he had a very long history before they finally cut him. True no clubs do. As the 2 page story in this mornings Courier Mail mentioned no clubs sack top-players, just the lesser first grade players and below. But no other clubs go on about how tough they are apart from the Broncos.

Raiders - > Carney

I thought that was huge given his role in the team and kind of year they were having.

I agree with most of the sentiment, though, most of the "discipline" dished out by clubs has been mostly posturing.

The Bird incident could be raised as another example, but I think that issue is far from finished and at the end of the day the Sharks acted in their financial interests due to concerns from sponsors. That might undermine the "courage" of that decision, regardless of whether or not it was justifiable (I don't trust everything I read, but I also think where there's smoke there's usually a bit of fire).

There seems to be too many posters confusing this incident with the Greg Bird one.

They've both been alleged to have committed a serious criminal offense. Neither have been found guilty.

Raiders - > Carney

I thought that was huge given his role in the team and kind of year they were having.

Carney had a long string of past incidents and would have been sacked the previous year with Steve Irwin if he wasn't a top player. And if Carney agreed with the clubs punishment and not to play again this year the Raiders wouldn't have sacked him.

Hardly, all Brisbane said was the Sharks made a call based on the circumstances. I hardly see them jumping in the air applauding the decision!

I must say this interview with incoming Bronco's coach and current assistant coach Ivan Henjak is most enlightening interview considering the current situation.

Are you worried Broncos players could be caught in similar situations?

If they don't learn with what's happened over the past few months with players like Todd Carney and Greg Bird . . . If players keep going down that path of drinking and putting themselves in dangerous positions, it's only a matter of time until it happens to one of them. They've got to learn a lesson in this.
Funny there Ivan I guess the players didn't learn a lesson about drinking and putting themselves in a dangerous position. Because lets face it here even if they aren't guilty of sexual assault they are guilty of putting themselves in this position through their choice to binge drink and engage in sexual activities in a public place.

What is the lesson the players should heed?
As a club I believe we're very strong in how we look at those things. Our brand is very important. The players are well aware of that, and I don't think we'll be covering things up. We just can't afford to do that any more. Players need to be made aware of that - we're just not going to cover things up any more, so they'll need to shape up.
Well right now I see Brisbane closing ranks which could be considered by some to be "covering it up". But I will give a period of grace there as the club is completing an in house investigation so maybe they want to wait until after that is complete before making any substantial announcements about the incident. Although the later comment about transparency does prove to be inaccurate with closing ranks, but once again a certain degree of latitude has to be allowed while the investigation is ongoing.

What was your initial reaction to news of Greg Bird's arrest?

The big thing you try to do, whether in teaching your kids or the advice you give to players, is there have got to be consequences to everything you do. If there are no consequences, things get out of control, and it doesn't do the players any favours long-term either. If they operate under a different set of rules than society does, you're setting a really dangerous precedent. They think they're better than everybody else when they are allowed to get away with things.

Does Bird at Cronulla fit into that category?

I think he's got away with things; things have probably been covered up over a long period, so the crash has been coming. Some people can learn from others and some people can pull their head in once they're told. He seems to me to be the type of player who has to hit the bottom of the barrel himself before he's going to change. Maybe this is going to be it.
Ok well hopefully in the next day or two with the conclusion of the in club investigation we will see the consequences in regards to all involved. Because as of right now there doesn’t seem to be any with all 3 alleged players named in the team for the weekends finals game.

Yeah....its the incompetence of the Qld police, it takes them weeks to do what the NSW police do in a few days.

Yeah...that and the fact that Bird delivered a glassed up girlfriend to the hospital and then lied about who committed the offence. Another deadsh*t Sharks fan.

You idiot. What rugby league needs less of is hanging judges like you taking the stupid moral high ground on unproven allegations.

Doesn't matter of it's allegations, charges - you are innocent until proven guilty. That's called a society, you moron.

It is a criminal charge moron! The police won't charge someone purely based on allegations. There was evidence you know.

Seymour is a 2nd rate player who couldn't even make the Sharks reserve grade side at one time.

You are an idiot. If these players are charged, or even if the internal investigation Brisbane are conducting determines that they have broken the standards of player conduct, they will be sacked. Until such time, all that is known is that the players were out drinking and that a complaint has been made.

For the conspiracy lovers out there.... she's urging people to get to the game and talking up the importance of the game.... sounds like a Broncos Fan.... after a 'few weeks' the grand final will be over ;-)

I thought it very inappropriate for the police minister to be cheering on the team rather than being interested in ensuring the interests of justice are best served.

One thing I think is very unfair in all these type of cases is that the guys involved are supported in a close team environment, so they get support, the ability to get their stories straight etc. The girl is generally on her own and will have the 3/4 guys involved plus others from the club fighting their battles for them against her.

What would be fair in these circumstances would be for the guys to be injuncted against talking to each other, associating with each other etc, so they can't work on getting their stories all lined up. Would be quite entertaining though to see how they play footy with such an injunction in place?

The saddest thing is the calls from Bronc fans when coffs, carney etc, where liud and clear. It is now in their back yard and I hear very few singing the same chorus line. To me that says all that needs to be said about the fans.

The club needs to take a firm hand, easier said than done. I did notice they punted the "lesser known" players without hesitation (lacey et al). These players (Boyd, Hunt, Thaiday) are much, much bigger names and the club is shutting up shop. If they do not take immediate action, before this weeks game (lets hope as rugby league supporters they do), however if they do not their image will be tarnished forever, they know and it and so do we.

NRL players shouldn't be allowed out without their mothers. They're a bunch of immature morons and should be treated as such.

she was interested in justice being served and was just stating innocent till proven guilty

perhaps she too is sick of news ltd saying guilty even if proven innocent

They've both been alleged to have committed a serious criminal offense. Neither have been found guilty.

One has been accused and charged by the police. That is why he was stood down. There's a difference here and I'm quite sure you've missed it so I'll lay it out for you:

* Bird - has been charged with grievous bodily harm. He will stand trial and faces jail if convicted.

* 3 Broncos - have had a complaint made against them and are under investigation. No charges have been laid.

Your stupidity knows no bounds.

Yeah what evidence, they went off early before even interviewing the alleged victim.

Statements from witnesses. Bird was also interviewed before being charged. This is where his lie about his mate being the perpetrator became known.
